Siesta Scripture Memory Team 2015: Verse 24!

Congratulations!! You did it!!

As we wrap a bow on our SSMT year and prepare for the upcoming Celebration, we want to send along our encouragement to you to continue in this great work.  Some of you have already told us you are continuing to memorize on your own, or have even formed your own local teams.  We couldn’t be happier to hear it!

Beth and LPM will plan to see you right back here next Jan 2017 to link arms together to hide God’s Word in our hearts. He is worthy!

      I forgot to leave a comment with my verse! I have so thoroughly enjoyed this year! It was my first time participating in this lovely community of Sisters in Christ! I always liked reading the other verses chosen by the women on the same page that my verse was posted. What has impacted me the most from this year of memorizing is how confident I feel in having a word to encourage someone or even myself… Often the verses I chose were so I could specifically deal with something of this world with the most powerful Word of God. Thanks Beth and the whole team!

    Isaiah 41:10 ESV

    Fear not, for I am with you;
    be not dismayed, for I am your God;
    I will strengthen you, I will help you,
    I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

    This is the verse a good friend sent to me when I was driving to the second trial of my brother. Instead of “righteous” right hand she wrote “victorious”. My brother was convicted in Dec 2010 of a crime he did not commit. He spent 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and until March 2015 in a maximum security prison. God protected my brother that whole time. 4 inmates were killed by other inmates during the time he was there. In Nov 2015 my brother received a new trial. He was found NOT GUILTY. He was crushed with hugs by family and friends. I have witnessed two miracles; God’s protection of my brother in prison and God giving my brother back to me. I wrote Isaiah 41:10 on a 3 x 5 card when I got to the courthouse and he had it with him all 3 days of the trial. This verse will always have a special place in my heart. God is faithful. AMEN!

    “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.” (Psalm 51:10 NKJV)

    For me, this was not just memorizing Scripture, it was remembering what God was teaching me through His Word. Beth referenced John 14:26 in her Verse #3 blog and it became my SSMT Verse #6 – “But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, will teach you all things and remind you of everything I have said to you.” So, I made up a new word for this: REMEMBERIZING. 🙂

    Kimberly Barrett says:

    To Beth and all the 2015 SSMT:

    What a blessed journey this has been over the past 12 months! I must admit that when I started in January, the process of picking a scripture was just a “pull from the hat” kind of process. That worked for about 6 to 8 scriptures but then I began having trouble remembering the verse reference or maybe even how the scripture began. One thing that God has taught me through this process is to look around the scripture that I want to memorize and see what is going on around it. It has forced me to do more reading, more background digging sometimes, in order to truly understand what is going on in a particular verse or verses. For instance, in late spring, my memory verse was Romans 12:15, “Rejoice with those who rejoice, mourn with those who mourn.” I had just lost a former student to an accident and my heart was so broken for his mother. I could always quote the scripture but I was having a very hard time remembering where it was found in the Bible. It was at that time that I began looking around the scripture and asking myself who, what, when, where, and why. When I realized that Romans 12:9-21 actually teaches me about Christian ethics, it was SO much easier for me to remember where in the Bible I would find it. Thank you Beth for this challenge to hide God’s words in my heart. It has brought me into a deeper desire to learn God’s Word.

    Sincerely,
    Kimberly Barrett

      So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. Luke 2:4-7 NIV

    Dear Beth,
    As I began this year with my first verse: Romans 8:18 “I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.” I look back on this verse as I go through the hardest days of my life. My husband of 37 years was diagnosed with terminal cancer in October. Seeing him suffer through the chemo with no end in sight is so hard, but knowing in the end he will be with The Lord gives me great hope. We both pray that our lives will give God glory in everything we do. Thank you my dear friend, you do not know me personally, but I see and hear from you all the time as our church goes through many women’s bible studies of yours. Just know this… that for the first time in my life I memorized 24 verses that will forever be on my heart until I am in heaven.

    God Bless you with all my heart,

    Thank you for the opportunity to join my fellow siestas in pursuit of the Psalmist’s passion to hide God’s word in his heart for the purpose of walking with purity before the Lord.

    At the close of the year – loved the confetti – I am so grateful for the verses that have guided me.

    My word for 2015 was Victory. I had a picture in my brain of what that would look like. Forgetting, in the wee moments before New Year’s, that victory generally involves a battle. And my word, it’s been a year! It has taken every ounce of strength, hope, faith and humor to persevere. And when my strength failed, He scooped me up and carried me in His arms.

    He has kept his promises and He has given me ground that I prayed for a solid decade to gain.

    Then two weeks ago, I had a horrendous day. I lost sight of all the victories, which in the moment seemed meaningless. Instead of dissolving into a heap, I ran a super-hot bath and grabbed my memory verse spiral.

    Just me and God and His word.

    The spiral-bound note cards were a ready record of His promises. Reminders of the ground He had given, the obstacles He had wiped away, and the manifold victories He had wrought. He used the verses to remove the stranglehold of fear and put me back together again.

    I began the year with Deuteronomy 20:4 (ESV), “for the Lord your God is He who goes with you to fight for you against your enemies, to give you the victory.”

    I end the year with Psalm 98:1 (NAB Revised Edition), “Sing a new song to the Lord, for he has done marvelous deeds. His right hand and holy arm have won the victory.”

    This day I sing a new song of Victory that only His strength could bring.
