Siesta Summer Bible Study 2014: Launch and Registration!

Welcome everybody! This is our first gathering for Children of the Day and we are incredibly blessed to have you along! If you’re just now hearing about it, we’d love for you to join us! You’ll find it most helpful to begin by reading this previous post that includes our approach, our summer Bible study schedule and many other specifics: (SSBS 2014 Info post) All you need to participate is the workbook entitled Children of the Day. We only officially “gather” here on the blog every two weeks because summers are so busy.  On each of those 5 Tuesdays (starting today), you’ll find a video I’ve prepared for you with instructions for that day. I’ll also remind you to do the next 2 weeks of Bible study before our next gathering. View it personally if you are going solo or, if you’re joining in with others, with your small group. I’ll always put the bare bones of that gathering’s instructions in print in the post as well (as you’ll see below) in case you have any trouble viewing the video. Here’s your first one!

Basic written instructions in case you have trouble with the video:

Register for our summer Bible study by simply leaving a comment to this post per instructions below. Of course, you can take part without registering but you’ll get much more out of it if you fully participate. It not only increases accountability. It stirs up a sense of belonging and fellowship which is so important to us here in this blog community.

Here’s what we’d love for you to supply in your registration comment today: (Try to limit yourself to this information so it will be easy to read and count.)

1. Your NAME.

2. Your CITY.

3. Whether you’re going SOLO or in tandem with a small group. If you’re in a small group, share approximately how many are in your group and where you are planning to meet.

4. Share in a sentence or two why you could really stand to be in Bible study this summer. Maybe it’s that you’ve never been in one before. We would be elated! Or maybe it’s been a long time. If so, this is a great time and place to come back home to the heart of Jesus. Maybe you’re just hoping to get to know Christ a little better. Or, perhaps you’re interested in particular subject matter that appears on the pages of 1st or 2nd Thessalonians. On the other hand, maybe you especially need to be in the Scriptures because you have extenuating circumstances that could really challenge you this summer. What’s motivating you to get into the Scriptures with us this summer? There are no wrong answers!

5. BONUS question (optional):  WHAT IS A QUIRK OF YOURS?? Come on, now! Tell us!

If you’re meeting with a small group, share your answers to questions 4 and 5.

I will pitch out a memory verse each week for anybody who wants to participate:

 Week 1 Memory Verse:

1 Thessalonians 1:4 The NET Bible: We know, brothers and sisters loved by God, that He has chosen you.

Week 2 Memory Verse:

1 Thessalonians 2:8 The NET Bible: …with such affection for you we were happy to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own lives, because you had become dear to us.

Do WEEKS ONE AND TWO of your homework before our next gathering in two weeks! If you’re watching the OPTIONAL video teaching sessions, you will want to watch Session 1 this week before you start your homework and Session 2 before you start your second week of homework. Here is the link: Children Of The Day Sessions

Don’t feel pressured to go to the added expense. All you need to participate in the summer study is the workbook.

I am so honored to serve you and study with you this summer! Can’t wait to see your names and locations! So much love to you, Sisters! We joyfully embrace each one of you.

    4. I always look for a bible study that I can really dive into when life is a bit more quiet.
    5. I always sleep with one leg out from under the covers.

    Debbe Block says:

Hi Ladies!! I am going solo and glad for the opportunity to do this study. I left my church of 20 years last year and we always did a summer study, usually with Beth. Some other friends may join me, but nothing is definite at this time. I pray the Lord’s blessing on our time!

    4. I’ve had some really big losses so far this year: my marriage and my job. I get these “odd” bursts of hope knowing deep down that God is going to re-create/re-build/re-invent my life, but I’m still in the aftermath of loss. I’ve never done a Beth Moore or “formal” Bible Study before. I thought you “had” to watch the videos and never could afford to buy the kits.
    5. Quirk: I must use a straight edge to underline in my Bible. No sloppy lines allowed!

    4. I like the discipline of doing a Bible study and miss that over the summer. I have never done an in-depth study of 1 and 2 Thessalonians.

    5. I am a huge Star Wars fan. My dog is named Princess Leia.

    1) My name is Joyce Tyson
    2) I live in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala (missionary here) but I am from Blairsville, GA.
    3) I’m doing this study with an online small group that is actually very large (WBC).
    4) I love Bible Study, community, and accountability. Living on the mission field has its blessings as well as challenges. I am totally dependent upon the Lord so I must stay in His Word, remain connected to the Vine, walk closely with Him, prayed up and fed… and so this provides a way to do that. This is why I’m in this Bible Study this summer.
    5) I have a particular chair where I do my studying and journaling. No matter what hour of the day, I just can’t seem to “get into it” if I’m not in my special chair. I guess that’s one of many quirky things about me.

I’m Jan in Mansfield and I’m going solo. I’ve really missed being in a Bible Study…schedule just hasn’t meshed with available days and times. I am kinda quirky about the way I load the dishwasher…I sometimes rearrange dishes others put in. I am not obsessive about anything else in the house. That’s a little odd.

    4. I just love the Word and I love to study it that’s why I’m in Bible study this summer. I never want to be not in Bible study. 🙂
    5. Something quirky about me…I’m sure my husband could answer this very quickly but I have to think about it. HUM…maybe that I have to get 7 hours a sleep a night. Every night. If I go to bed later than normal, I seen in later. If I go to bed earlier I get up earlier. I don’t know why, I just feel like I feel my best if I get 7 hours a sleep a night. No more, no less.

    4. I need summer study to keep me accountable and connected. I feel a sense of loss when everyone goes their separate ways between Spring and Fall, and I want to stay in fellowship to stay grounded in God’s Word.

    5. My quirk: I sniff books. Every single time I get a new book I open it up to several different places and sniff it. Every time I open my study book or devotionals, I sniff them. I love the smell of new books, and since I only buy Christian books, perhaps I am “breathing in the Scriptures”. However, I also do the same thing with tires and new shoes.

    Katie Turner says:

Hi! I’m Katie Turner from Birmingham, AL. I’ve done lots of Beth Moore Bible studies in the past with groups, but with a toddler at home, I’ll be doing this one solo (in my pjs lol) 🙂 I have for real OCD, so too many “quirks” to count, but I guess I’ll say…I only use a straw if it’s wrapped and my silverware of choice is also the plastic wrapped kind. I’ll stop there lest y’all think I’m too weird and don’t want to be my online-Bible-study friends lol 🙂

    Mia Callahan says:

Hi, this is Mia Callahan, dropping in from Burlington, VT.
I think I’ll be going solo on this study. Last year we did your study on Daniel at church….tremendous.
I know it will be beneficial to STAY IN THE WORD!
I am undergoing chemo and the more I stay in His Word,
the stronger my faith is….if I relax on it, it’s
    almost a palpable weakening!
Not sure it’s a quirk, but I LOVE to read…so nice now,
too, that in addition to my Bible and studies, etc., there
is now much more fiction that is Christian oriented.Thank You, God!! Looking forward to this! Thank you for presenting us with the opportunity! Blessings to you all,
    Mia

    5. Quirk-I often read to my family out loud if I think something will speak into their life. I have sometimes picked up a book and said some things that might not have been in the book. Ok teenagers don’t always listen to mom. I didn’t say it was in the book I just put the book in front of me and quoted my point. That was all good until my daughter tried to show the good thought to her friend and she couldn’t find it in the book. Busted.
