Siesta Summer Bible Study 2014: Launch and Registration!

Welcome everybody! This is our first gathering for Children of the Day and we are incredibly blessed to have you along! If you’re just now hearing about it, we’d love for you to join us! You’ll find it most helpful to begin by reading this previous post that includes our approach, our summer Bible study schedule and many other specifics: (SSBS 2014 Info post) All you need to participate is the workbook entitled Children of the Day. We only officially “gather” here on the blog every two weeks because summers are so busy.  On each of those 5 Tuesdays (starting today), you’ll find a video I’ve prepared for you with instructions for that day. I’ll also remind you to do the next 2 weeks of Bible study before our next gathering. View it personally if you are going solo or, if you’re joining in with others, with your small group. I’ll always put the bare bones of that gathering’s instructions in print in the post as well (as you’ll see below) in case you have any trouble viewing the video. Here’s your first one!

Basic written instructions in case you have trouble with the video:

Register for our summer Bible study by simply leaving a comment to this post per instructions below. Of course, you can take part without registering but you’ll get much more out of it if you fully participate. It not only increases accountability. It stirs up a sense of belonging and fellowship which is so important to us here in this blog community.

Here’s what we’d love for you to supply in your registration comment today: (Try to limit yourself to this information so it will be easy to read and count.)

1. Your NAME.

2. Your CITY.

3. Whether you’re going SOLO or in tandem with a small group. If you’re in a small group, share approximately how many are in your group and where you are planning to meet.

4. Share in a sentence or two why you could really stand to be in Bible study this summer. Maybe it’s that you’ve never been in one before. We would be elated! Or maybe it’s been a long time. If so, this is a great time and place to come back home to the heart of Jesus. Maybe you’re just hoping to get to know Christ a little better. Or, perhaps you’re interested in particular subject matter that appears on the pages of 1st or 2nd Thessalonians. On the other hand, maybe you especially need to be in the Scriptures because you have extenuating circumstances that could really challenge you this summer. What’s motivating you to get into the Scriptures with us this summer? There are no wrong answers!

5. BONUS question (optional):  WHAT IS A QUIRK OF YOURS?? Come on, now! Tell us!

If you’re meeting with a small group, share your answers to questions 4 and 5.

I will pitch out a memory verse each week for anybody who wants to participate:

 Week 1 Memory Verse:

1 Thessalonians 1:4 The NET Bible: We know, brothers and sisters loved by God, that He has chosen you.

Week 2 Memory Verse:

1 Thessalonians 2:8 The NET Bible: …with such affection for you we were happy to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own lives, because you had become dear to us.

Do WEEKS ONE AND TWO of your homework before our next gathering in two weeks! If you’re watching the OPTIONAL video teaching sessions, you will want to watch Session 1 this week before you start your homework and Session 2 before you start your second week of homework. Here is the link: Children Of The Day Sessions

Don’t feel pressured to go to the added expense. All you need to participate in the summer study is the workbook.

I am so honored to serve you and study with you this summer! Can’t wait to see your names and locations! So much love to you, Sisters! We joyfully embrace each one of you.

I have so much going on right now that I had decided not to do this New Study at this time. But…yesterday I received the workbook, then I find that the Siesta Bible Study begins today. I feel the blessing of inward growth coming my way! God always knows.

    3. & 4 Excited to continue studying God’s word with my friend Gabrielle. Summer routines…that’s an oxymorone 🙂 That’s why I need to do this study with a partner to hold me accountable since my routine is not so structured and it is so easy to let the morning pass in busyness rather than His word.

    4. In the last month, I have graduated, moved to a new state, and gotten married, so things were a bit crazy there for a while! Now that I’m settling into our new home, I have a bit more time, so I really want to use it for His glory. As I adjust to life as a military wife, I NEED Him! And my new husband needs me to be in the Word.
    5. I have an irrational fear of birds. Is that quirky? 😉

    4. I really wanted to do this study as a way to get back into the Bible. As a new mommy, it’s hard to get off work and then spend the evening in bible study away from my family. This will be a perfect way to get to do this study from home and in the evenings when my little guy is sleeping. 🙂
    5. Not sure if this is a quirk, but I’m a makeup junkie!!! I absolutely love it and have too much of it! My latest obsession in Urban Decays lipstick in Anarchy… Lasts all day long!!

I was in a Bible Study at my church, but it doesn’t meet in the summer. I want to stay in the word and do better with guidance and accountability.
I’m a tad OCD and require myself to complete certain chores before moving to the “fun” stuff like reading and sewing.

Small group (two) meeting/discussing during lunch breaks.

My friend approached me about doing this study and the timing was perfect as I tend to stray from the Word when life gets busy and this will get me back on focus!

First thing I must do in the morning is fire up the Keurig and read a “verse of the day”.

    4) This Bible study comes at a crazy, yet exciting, time of my life as I prepare to move across the country to begin medical school next month. Drawing close to Him during this season has been the biggest source of my peace and joy in the midst of all the changes!
    5) I refer to other cars while driving as the state of their license plate. If a car is going slow in front of me with a Colorado license plate I’ll say, “Come on, Colorado, let’s go!”

I have had a tremendous season of DISTRACTION and definitely feel like the dog Doug in the movie “UP” … I have followed Christ for a LONG time, but in order to live a faithful life I need to be focused on JESUS, not my distractions (aka circumstances) – I’m hoping this study will simply be a “lens” of focus for me during this summer of 2014 and the bonus that I get to share in it with ladies I don’t get to see very often is a GIFT!!

A quirk? (I wish my kids were handy because I’m sure they could quickly and easily help me out with this ;)) I like a well organized handbag – so my purse is filled with a bunch of “mini purses” … I get teased about this quite often!!

This past year I have realized I always need to be doing a study all year long to keep me grounded and in the word!!! I was very excited to see this one offered as I love Beth’s studies and haven’t done one for a few years!

One quirk I have is that when I get out of my car I can’t just hit the door lock button once on my keypad even though that does lock the car. I have to hit it twice to actually hear the annoying it’s locked sound or I just can’t walk away :)!

    5. I really, really enjoy structure and organization 🙂 maybe even to much… My hunnie calls me the folder queen! Bad thing but good thing is that my quirk doesn’t work on my kiddos LOL!!! They’ve taught me so much!

I’m thirsty and knew this would be a fire hydrant of God’s Word 😀

Tandem from a distance! We’re all somewhere east of the Mississippi, but we make it work.
I could use a Bible study because I need to stay connected durig a summer internship in the big city of Wahsington, DC. I need to remember that I can have all the fun in the world and do great things, but if I don’t do it with the Lord’s favor and with His people, it will be pointless.

    5. Quirks: The entire time I type I make crazy faces like I’m having a face-to-face conversation with a friend – including smiles, frown lines, chuckles, the whole thing. It doesn’t matter if it’s in an email or on Twitter – I’m pouring my whole self into it 🙂

I have faithfully kept up with my Bible reading plan to read the bible through in 2014, but I am craving MORE! I’m as dry as those old bones and I know what that means… more of the Word and more quality time with my Father. So the timing of this one is perfect!

  33. 333
    Michelle says:

My name is Michelle and I live in Champaign, IL. I am going solo; I decided to join up because summer is usually a slow time for bible studies at my church, but I really wanted to stay plugged into the Word.

A quirk of mine…oh my, there are so many. How do I choose? I am known for my dated figures of speech, like “groovy” and “I can dig” and “Far out”. My favorite is “cool beans” (I’m an 80′s girl); and recently I’ve taken up saying “Awesome Sauce”! I’m in prayer about that one…

  34. 334
    Sharon Quevreaux says:

    Sharon, Mineola, Texas, Solo,
I love studying God’s word and I haven’t studied Thessalonians in depth. Looking forward to being in the Word.
Cheese is my favorite food and I try to have it at every meal. Cinnamon Swirl Bread with cheese for breakfast is one of my favorite foods. Crazy I know, but scrumptious for sure. Colby Jack is my favorite.

  35. 335

    I’m Laura from Savannah, Georgia.

I’m going solo this time, although my sister and her friends are doing a group out of state and I may join them once or twice when I’m in town this summer.

I am really excited about doing the bible study because I haven’t been in a women’s bible study in a year and a half. The one at my church that I went to was no longer able to provide childcare, and since I have four kiddos I need childcare! I had baby number 4 this past December, so I am looking forward to some more focused, in-depth bible study than I’ve been doing the last few months.

The only quirk I can think of off the top of my head (I’m sure there are many more!) is that I don’t really like different foods to touch on a plate. Especially if there are hot and cold foods. No gravy or marinade sliding into my salad please.

    Kim Sanger says:

    I also forgot my quirk..
I have to have all the blanks filled in, whether in bible study, a questionnaire, anything. (Notice I have now made 3 comments to answer 5 questions:)
I prefer mustard and onions on my hot dogs, but they have to go on the bun first. I don’t like biting into a hot dog and getting a mustard mustache:)

I don’t drink coffee but I love a diet coke in the morning. BUT it has to be a fountain drink-preferably, McD’s. No cans or bottles, ever!
