Siesta Summer Bible Study 2014: Launch and Registration!

Welcome everybody! This is our first gathering for Children of the Day and we are incredibly blessed to have you along! If you’re just now hearing about it, we’d love for you to join us! You’ll find it most helpful to begin by reading this previous post that includes our approach, our summer Bible study schedule and many other specifics: (SSBS 2014 Info post) All you need to participate is the workbook entitled Children of the Day. We only officially “gather” here on the blog every two weeks because summers are so busy.  On each of those 5 Tuesdays (starting today), you’ll find a video I’ve prepared for you with instructions for that day. I’ll also remind you to do the next 2 weeks of Bible study before our next gathering. View it personally if you are going solo or, if you’re joining in with others, with your small group. I’ll always put the bare bones of that gathering’s instructions in print in the post as well (as you’ll see below) in case you have any trouble viewing the video. Here’s your first one!

Basic written instructions in case you have trouble with the video:

Register for our summer Bible study by simply leaving a comment to this post per instructions below. Of course, you can take part without registering but you’ll get much more out of it if you fully participate. It not only increases accountability. It stirs up a sense of belonging and fellowship which is so important to us here in this blog community.

Here’s what we’d love for you to supply in your registration comment today: (Try to limit yourself to this information so it will be easy to read and count.)

1. Your NAME.

2. Your CITY.

3. Whether you’re going SOLO or in tandem with a small group. If you’re in a small group, share approximately how many are in your group and where you are planning to meet.

4. Share in a sentence or two why you could really stand to be in Bible study this summer. Maybe it’s that you’ve never been in one before. We would be elated! Or maybe it’s been a long time. If so, this is a great time and place to come back home to the heart of Jesus. Maybe you’re just hoping to get to know Christ a little better. Or, perhaps you’re interested in particular subject matter that appears on the pages of 1st or 2nd Thessalonians. On the other hand, maybe you especially need to be in the Scriptures because you have extenuating circumstances that could really challenge you this summer. What’s motivating you to get into the Scriptures with us this summer? There are no wrong answers!

5. BONUS question (optional):  WHAT IS A QUIRK OF YOURS?? Come on, now! Tell us!

If you’re meeting with a small group, share your answers to questions 4 and 5.

I will pitch out a memory verse each week for anybody who wants to participate:

 Week 1 Memory Verse:

1 Thessalonians 1:4 The NET Bible: We know, brothers and sisters loved by God, that He has chosen you.

Week 2 Memory Verse:

1 Thessalonians 2:8 The NET Bible: …with such affection for you we were happy to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own lives, because you had become dear to us.

Do WEEKS ONE AND TWO of your homework before our next gathering in two weeks! If you’re watching the OPTIONAL video teaching sessions, you will want to watch Session 1 this week before you start your homework and Session 2 before you start your second week of homework. Here is the link: Children Of The Day Sessions

Don’t feel pressured to go to the added expense. All you need to participate in the summer study is the workbook.

I am so honored to serve you and study with you this summer! Can’t wait to see your names and locations! So much love to you, Sisters! We joyfully embrace each one of you.

Hi! I’m in Wilmington NC. I’ll be watching and reading solo…..and discussing with a group of pastors wives via a Facebook discussion group. Looking forward to digging into this because I’ve never been through a Beth Moore study before and because I love digging into scripture and learning. Also….because the book cover is really pretty. 🙂

I need to do this bible study this summer because I will be really busy in August when I start pharmacy school. I need to get plugged into a group that can keep me accountable so I don’t fade out before the series is over.

    4. we are in the process of finding a new church and have not been in a good Bible study for a while. Also, my 17yo daughter is currently listed for a double lung transplant and at any moment I will be heading to Seattle for 3 months and this will be the perfect way to be able to continue in a Bible study away from home.

My name is Patti Priest and I am from Lorena, Texas.
I am going to do this bible study with my 15 yr old daughter. Actually stumbled across this opportunity and it sounded very doable and I love structure and accountability. Also, since I lead bible study during the school year I wanted to be a part of a bible study as a participant.

I’m excited for the opportunity to study Thessalonians

    Julie says:

Good morning, great start for a new bible study. Looking forward to doing this with a group of ladies. Some have previously done Beth Moore studies. My name is Julie and I live in Columbus , Ohio. I like to keep myself in Bible study because I find that I am a little more sure to stay in the scriptures each day. I like the accountability, but most of all love being in the Word. Beth’s studies always offer so much insight. Thank you Beth. Hmmmm Quirky…..so ADHD that I constantly find myself trying to stop doing things in circles and refocus, only to start running in circles again. These studies do make me stay focused.

    4. I am a small group leader in my church’s youth group, so I spend a lot of time [especially] during the school year pouring into the lives of teenage women and I’ve been looking for a Bible study for the summer to get poured into so I can be refreshed and ready to hit the ground running in the fall when we continue our Bible study and youth group times.
    5. When eating a meal, I usually leave the last bite or two… it’s either not as hot/cold as the first several bites, or I’m just getting bored of eating whatever it is. And NONE of the different foods on my plate touches each other. 😀

    4. Because there is nothing I want more this summer than to sink my feet deep into God’s word! To learn more, to go deeper!

    5. A quirk of mine is that when conversing with friends, certain phrases used will cause a song to pop into my head with that same phrase or something very similar, and maybe, just maybe I start humming/singing it out loud! : )

Another one… when going on walks, I always walk around grates or sewer holes in the road for fear of falling in them! Haha!!!

No opportunity for connecting with ladies at home church 1 hour from home as husband is a retired pastor now serving as SBC regional missionary for for SBC Conservatives of Virginia with over 100 churches in his region, so we are basically in a different church every Sunday. My quirk may well be the odd way I order my Starbucks coffee. An ‘iced…grande…decaf…non-fat…sugar free…white chocolate mocha’….better known in Seattle as a “WHY BOTHER!”

    5. I love to sing the National Anthem. By myself. At at event. Loudly. In the shower, in the car, anywhere – audience or not. I’m blessed to live near a military town (Warner Robins, GA) and sometimes I get to sing it for retirement ceremonies. In fact I sang it at our Governor’s inauguration. I feel an urge to sing it coming on even now… 🙂

    5. My quirk is that I don’t like any of my food to touch on my plate and I eat one thing at a item and move clockwise on my plate.

  22. 222
    Melissa Dodge says:

Melissa Dodge – Sioux City, IA. Small Group via online. I NEED this…feeling dry and disconnected from my Lord and I have a hard time being consistent in my quiet times without a study to guide me. My quirk is that I hate birds! They always fly WAY too close to me when I go running!!!

    4. Something quirky: I am a huge Jane Austen fan. I’ve got books, movies, an action figure, and a finger puppet. 🙂
    5. Needing to do a bible study right now because I really just want to reassert God as a priority over my life – but I also want to be growing and learning. We’re in between churches, trying to find where the Lord would have us, and just experiencing a lot of confusion and lack of confidence in our ability to discern. I just want to take my focus off all of that and place it firmly on Jesus and God’s word. I saw y’all were doing a study, and I went out and got a workbook. Simple as that. Thanks for having me.

I honestly just wanted to do a summer study this year and this one sounded great. I admit I couldn’t stop myself from starting it already and wow, it has been exactly what I need to hear at this point in my life!
A quirk? I always slow down my reading during the last few chapters of a good book (or Bible study, for that matter!)…for some reason, it is hard to let it go. 🙂
So excited to join all of you on this journey!

    5. Two quirks, chocolate & sock monkeys 🙂

  28. 228
    Deana Chapman says:

I’m from Birmingham, Alabama. I’ll be doing this study solo, due to travel and other commitments. Can’t wait to see how God will minister to me through Thessalonians. My quirk: sheets and pillowcases must match, or at least coordinate in color and design, or it makes my skin crawl!

  29. 229
    Zdenka Parmley says:

    2. City: Niceville, FL
    3. I am going solo
    4. Time is limited but feel the need for a study. On the heels of a divorce, at 63, so much of my life seems over and wonder what God could possibly do with the rest of my life – what my purpose is – I need a new word from God.
    5. Too many to count. I love a good hamburger/steak and at times will do almost anything to get one. I so want to be healthy but sabotage my quest with sweets and unhealthy things constantly.

    Constance says:

    1) Constance Close
    2) Christiansburg, VA
    3) Solo
    4) I want to grow spiritually by digging deep in the Word. I am praying through God’s call to women’s ministry in my local body and excited to see what He has for me in this study and in the ministry opportunities that are ahead. I will also be leading this study in fall at my church.
    5) I cannot wear pants to church on Sunday mornings! I am totally cool with anyone wearing whatever (jeans, shorts, etc…) but I was raised to wear my ‘best’ to worship and was taught my best was a dress (dating myself a little, I know). So, even though I am good with my girls wearing jeans, I can’t bring myself to wear them on Sunday morning. But, I am good with it on Sunday evening! Weird, I know!

    3. Solo, but I am hoping that if someone is doing this study solo in Baltimore, MD, we could become a small group and do the study in a coffee shop… or something like that.
    4. I need the God of Again. I have been in a long, dry season.
    5. When I hug people, I pat them on the back. My family comments on that every time. So it must be a quirk or a defense mechanism. 🙂

  34. 234
    Pam Williams says:

    1. Pam Williams

    4. When I have a different schedule each week, like I do in the summer, I will look back and find that I’ve not been in the Word for days and days. This format helps ground me and discipline me and I love receiving a timely word from Beth!
    5. The quirk that comes to mind is: It drives me crazy when the bath towels are not folded lengthwise first! It just makes total sense when they’re going from cabinet to towel rack that they be folded in the way that they will hang.
    Much love to all!

  35. 235
    Natasha Gass says:

    1. Natasha Gass
    2. Franklin, Kentucky
    3. Solo
    4. The last year has been a rough road in my life due to many different factors such as divorce, child battles and all the things associated with a broken home. 2 months ago my ex husband and I decided to work things out and I have felt really compelled to try to get into the word and praise God for repairing my family. I have searched high and low for a church to call home and feel welcome in. I am praying this study will draw me closer to him and that I will feel his presence leading me to the church he would want me in and to lead the life he would have me lead. I am very excited to begin this journey to a whole new life through Jesus.
    5. I have many quirks for I am OCD about a lot of things :)But just to share a couple of them:
*Socks that are wrong side out in the laundry (something about sticking my hand in dirty socks to turn them right side out just turns my stomach )
*For the chairs at my kitchen table to not be in the proper place if someone isn’t sitting in them (I have 3 boys so I am constantly pushing chairs under the table 🙂

    3. Solo
    4. I love to study God’s Word but haven’t been in a group in awhile. Since I live so far from my friends, this is the perfect alternative to gathering with them. And who wouldn’t want to be in a group with Beth!?
    5. I take a bite of my sandwich, then turn it over to see if I like it better that way. It does taste different to me, and I want enjoy my sandwich to the fullest. (Haha!)

    4. I need to be in Buble study this summer because I tend to “take the summer off.” Having an organized study for the summer will help me stay in. His word and keep it fresh in my life and mind.
    5. Quirk: I guess one silly one is when I am doing the laundry I have to do each load in a particular order – example, jeans, darks, lights, whites! I guess I didn’t realize it but if my sweet husband helps do laundry and it’s not in that order I wonder WHY?

Looking forward to joining sisters around the world in studying God’s Word!!

    Becky Getter says:

I love the book of Thessalonians, I love Beth Moore’s teachings and most of all, I love The Lord and studying His word. I facilitate a bible study in my home during the school year, but we break for the summer. This online study is perfect for me. I am excited to be a part of it and looking forward to leaning into God’s word with a wonderful group of women. I pray that we all are open to the leading of the Holy Spirit as we make this journey through Thessalonians together. Thank you to Beth Moore and her awesome team/staff!

    4) We are thirsting for the Living Water, and desiring to go deeper in our relationship with the Lord.
    5) I never leave home without my lipgloss. I usually have one in every room in my house where I spend time, and one in my car, one in my purse. 🙂

    1. Joyce Davidson
    2. Big River, Saskatchewan, Canada
    3. Small Group! Possibly 7+ ladies! We’ll be meeting at a dear friend’s house weekly.
    4. Why am I in Bible study this summer? I’m thirsty and yes, feeling dry. The verse that you shared, Beth, from Isaiah 44 is pasted up by my kitchen sink…needless to say – it brought me to tears. There’s nothing I desire more than to be continually awakened by God through His Son and His Spirit. And then to pass that on so my children will indeed as Isaiah 44 states – have His Spirit poured out on them. He’s all I/we need. Praying and anticipating a move and work that only Jesus can do.
    5. A quirk….O, where to start…..??!! My feet need to be covered at all times whilst I’m asleep – no matter how warm I may be…..something or someone may grab them! hahaha

    Danielle says:

    1.) Danielle
    2.) Orlando, FL
3.) I’m doing this study with my Mom! We’ll get together when we can and talk on the phone too.
4.) I’m doing this study to grow closer to the Lord. I am a stay-at-home Mommy of two little ones (an almost 2 yr old boy and 9 month old girl), and I desire to learn how to glorify God everyday even doing the daily chores. I’ve used busyness and lack of sleep as an excuse for why I haven’t had quality time with the Lord, and I don’t want to do that anymore. I want to be a godly mom for my children so they grow up knowing the Truth. I wanted to do this study with my mom because we are best friends and I thought we could both use the encouragement and accountability as well as spiritual fellowship. I’ve done Bible studies in the past but it’s been awhile since I’ve completed one.
5.) I absolutely cannot drink milk after anybody! I’ll drink any other drink after my family except for milk. My husband has stolen a drink of my cup of milk or has dunked his cookies in my milk, and I can’t finish it! I have to get a new cup of milk. I don’t know why, but for some reason it really grosses me out. Also, if I forget my husband’s dress shirts in the dryer, I will rewash them so I don’t have to iron….I’ve rewashed a shirt three times before just to I didn’t have to iron! 🙂

    Martie Carter says:

    1. Martie Carter

    3. I think I am going solo, not sure yet. If we are doing it together, switching homes.
    4. I do youth ministry on Fort Hood, Texas. I usually don’t have time to meet with women for study, so I usually do study on my own. This is exciting for me to be able to do it with others online.
    5. I love football, while my husband doesn’t at all. If anyone starts talking to him about football, he calls me over so I can engage in that conversation, and he finds something else to do. My daughter loves football and my son hates it, so I think we’ve passed that along to our kids.
