Siesta Summer Bible Study 3 Launch

Hey, Siestas! It’s time for summer Bible study! For the sake of rich fellowship and vital accountability, we hope as many of you as possible are meeting with small groups and on every other Tuesday or as close to Tuesdays as possible. You are absolutely welcome to join us solo but try to stay as involved as possible in the discussions so that you’ll feel plugged in. This is what you’ll do every other Tuesday:

1. Watch the video so you’ll have your instructions for your gathering or for your solo experience. I will always put the bare bones of the instructions in writing on the post just in case there is a video malfunction.

2. (You will find these instructions reiterated in this post because it’s fundamental to the experience.) If you are in a small group, designate one person who will write a comment to this post briefly telling us about your group and your discussion. It can be a different person each week or the same. START THE COMMENT WITH THE CITY, THE NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS AND LOCATION THEN DESCRIBE YOUR GROUP AND ADD SOMETHING ABOUT YOUR DISCUSSION. For instance, I am meeting with my Monday staff members so my comment will begin with:

Houston, Texas; 8 of us; Meeting at Living Proof Ministries. Our group is primarily made up of…The main part of our discussion was about…(And so forth).

3. If you are going solo, your comment will become the way you complete the assignments. In other words, you’ll see that I ask you to describe this season of your life in one word. In your comment, tell us what that one word would be.

Make the length of it one good, descriptive paragraph. Try not to write too much or readers will tend to skip over it.

This clip is to give instructions for your first gathering – the one you are hopefully having today or in next 24 hours. You can watch this together or your leader can watch it and pass on your instructions.

Summer Bible Study – Week 1 from LPV on Vimeo.

I so hope that makes sense! Now, here are the written instructions for your gathering just in case you can’t get the video to work. Welcome aboard! May God take us on a journey that we’ll treasure for many years. Let’s find the Ruth in us, Siestas!

Today in your small group, here’s what I am asking you to do:

1. If you don’t know each other, spend a few minutes finding out some basic biographical information about one another.  (Single, married, still in school, or in a career. Children, no children. The regular stuff. Keep in mind that everybody fits in Bible study. You don’t need to all be alike. In fact, the more alike you all are, the less you may sharpen one another.)

2. Each of you in your small group characterize your life in this present season in ONE WORD.  Have the leader record these.

3. Each of you in your small group share one specific goal you have this summer for being in Bible study. Have the leader record these, too.

4. Look at the very last verse of the Book of Judges (Judges 21:25) because of its placement just prior to the book we’ll study together this summer. Discuss several specific reasons why doing what each of us sees fit at any given time could be dangerous. After several minutes of discussion, read Jeremiah 17:7-14 and talk about how this segment relates or contrasts to Judges 21:25.

Leader: this is very important. You get back on within 24 hours of meeting and write a brief summation of your group time as a comment to this post. Tell us how many came, your city, and something about your group or your group discussion.

*UPDATE*
Here’s a link to the first chapter of Ruth in case you don’t have your workbook yet.

    Port Orchard, Washington
There are four in our group and we are made up of a Mom and her daughters. Our age range is 15-52.
We will meet when the girls return from camp in a week.

    Stephanie Timms says:

Luling, TX and Hobbs, NM: 3 of us. Two of us are friends and co-workers so we can talk daily about our study. My friend in Hobbs has been my friend since Kindergarten! I am blessed to be able to share her first Beth Moore study with her. I am a veteran to “Momma’s” studies and dearly love her.

Our words were: confused, thankful, and blessed. We are dealing with a husband returning from a 10 month deployment to Afganistan, a recent loss of a mother, and just the blessings of having 2 sweet boys and watching them grow.

We all three hope to find peace in God’s words and grow closer to him through this study.

I’m going through the study and meeting weekly with two very dear friends. We’re in Champaign, IL. The three of us are in quite different seasons of life, but we hold two things in common for sure–we love being SAHMs, and we love Jesus. 🙂 We know each other quite well as God brought us (and one other dear friend) together to meet weekly over coffee and pumpkin muffins over the last several months to encourage, support, share and pray together. The words that describe our seasons of life are “refining,” “challenging” and “hopeful.” We have a very common goal for this study–to draw closer to God and be focused/disciplined in Bible study throughout the Summer. I am absolutely thrilled to be a part of such an incredible community of women in the Body of Christ. And I’m even more thrilled to share in this journey with these two dear friends. Praise God for my girls!

Howdy Ladies. I am solo from Mountain Home Texas.

One word to describe my season right now is “hunger”. I have only begun my walk with the Lord. I received my first bible this past Christmas and since then I have had an insatiable hunger to learn all I can about His word.

I’ve just completed another of Beth’s bible study and I’m eager to go on. Looking forward to making new friends.

    Gwen says:

Hi I am Gwen from WV. I am going solo through this Bible Study. I am involved in a small group throughout the year with my church but we take a break through the summer. I always like the accountability of doing a study though—keeps me in the Word! My “season” so to speak is a spiritual awakening. I was in such a ditch this past year and this spring I just experienced God so big in my life and my marriage that I just can’t get enough of Him right now! I’m looking forward to the study.

    Springfield, MO
    5 Ladies
We will rotate houses throughout the study!!!
We are all stay-at-home mama’s in our late 20’s and early 30’s.

We’ve met as a playgroup for at least a year and are so excited to grow even closer together through the study of God’s word!!! We love each other dearly and have the.most.fun.ever.together!

    Season words:
    anxious
    seeking
    tender
    coasting
    growing

    Goals:
    “I want to experience Peace”
“Intimacy with God and our Bible study group”
“To ruse up to a challenge and not back away from it”
“To be able to say confidently that I believe God and not to second guess”
“To apply what I learn and not just know it”

Our small, geographically challenged group met via speaker phone (Mom and I in Lexington, KY with my sister in Boulder, Colorado). What a sweet time of sharing! We concluded that no matter what the present season of our lives, we all face challenges each day. Rather than listen to our deceitful hearts, we yearn to know God’s truth and follow our Savior so that when the challenges come, we are deep-rooted in Him!

    Jess says:

    Hello..
I will be doing this study solo.. I am 37 and from NJ.
I have two beautiful daughters 10 and 12 and a wonderful Godly husband that I have been married to for 17 years.
My heart is asking for God’s Word and I know I need him. I pray that this study will bring me closer to God.
If there are any ladies from NJ that would like to study together I would love that.

Hi! I’m in Rocky Mount, NC and am doing this solo. Don’t know of any one else doing it here. I am married (31 years) and have two grown children who are married to wonderful people also. My descriptive word for my season is “searching.” I am constantly searching to find God’s will for my life each day because I so… have found out I will not be at peace otherwise.

  13. 813
    Nicki says:

UNSETTLED – describes my life during this season….I am so thankful to be a part of the Siesta Sisterhood! I am traveling with my husband this summer while he works and so I don’t know where I will be on any given Tuesday. We are mainly KS, TX, NE – home is in Nebraska. Even tho I am a SOLO -participating in the study with you gives me a sense of community and accountability! I look forward to meeting with you this summer!

    Lynda Harkins says:

Monterey,CA~3 of us in our late fourties, early fifties. Meeting in our homes.
Our words: transitional, expectant and looking
Our goal: To stay in God’s Word through the study of one who has heard from God regarding Ruth’s story.

We discussed that the only intended outcome of doing things as we see fit is disaster!
We stayed on the Jeremiah 17 Scripture at vs. 10. We needed to camp there a bit and talk about how connected our hearts and minds are and how our Lord searches and examines them to determine our rewards.

Blessings from Monterey for those siestas who are going solo this year…we include you as if you were here with us.

  15. 815
    Debbie says:

I am a native Houstonian, flying solo for now with this study. I am married, 3 great kids (18, 16 and 6), I’m in my mid 40’s. This season of my life is called “Confusion”.
My goal is to develop a more courageous spirit to face my many uncertainties – and to maintain my relationship with Christ who will give me strength to make it through.

  16. 816
    Sarah says:

Franklin, Tennessee- The four of us have been best of friends for about 20 years:) Met at church, planned weddings together, watched our families grow with babies together, eaten out and celebrated many times together, prayed for each other often but never have “done” a Bible Study together. We are all married, most have children, all work outside home and love the Lord!!!! Our first meeting was at a Mexican restaurant and we plan to meet at each others’ homes. We are so EXCITED to finally share a Bible Study together.

Going solo although I do have a friend that I went to the Sietsta Memory Verse Clelbration with that is also doing it so will try to get together with her for lunch once or tiwe during the study. I’m married with 3 kids in College. I teach biology at Texas Christian University (Go Frogs)in Fort Worth TX.
My current state seems to be on a plateau. My desire and goal is to go deeper in the word and get my excitement back. I’m very excited to do the study as I was introduced to it by Kelly at the Women’s Forum at Lifeway last November.

    Tulare, California
8 ladies ranging in age from early 30’s to early 60’s.
We are all related. (sister in laws, my mom, my mother in law, cousins)
We’ve never done anything like this before as a family. We fellowshipped (a lot!) 🙂 and talked about the seasons each of us was in and how God works all things for good…even when we might have been deceived by our wicked hearts. God can use our bad choices for good. My mom shared her heart (which she is usually shy and doesn’t really involve herself with many group settings) and it was awesome. I cannot wait to meet again in to weeks.

    Sarah says:

    Franklin, Tennessee-

The four of us have been best of friends for almost 20 years:) We met at church years ago but now worship in different churches.Over the years we have planned our weddings together, watched our families grow, eaten out and celebrated birthdays many times, and prayed for each other often! This will be our first Bible Study together. We are EXCITED to finally complete a study as a group! We are planning to meet at our homes. Three out of four of us are moms, all of us have some type of job outside the home also. Our lives are so BUSY and making time to meet is a challenge ( dads on duty/ finding babysitters) but we really want to seek God and study His word together!! Expecting God’s Blessings.

Tuscumbia, Alabama …Birthplace of Helen Keller ! 6 beautiful women shared our hearts over a cup of pudding and fancy cookies. ( I just LOVE WalMart cookies 🙂 We all agree we feel God tugging at our hearts saying: ” I miss YOU!” We are frantic, flucuating, joyful, disconnected, and stagnant and ready ” to pack our bags” and go on this journey with God! ( you might even see some of us wearing red shoes next time around )Some in our group have children with special needs…including me and some in our group….well they are just plain SPECIAL !! Thank you Kelly and Beth for all that you do…this is going to be GOOD !!!!

Surrey, BC, Canada – Solo – Word to describe my season – Releasing I am experiencing empty nest (which I dreaded), going through a divorce (after 25 years of marriage) and learning to cling to my Father and Savior to meet all my needs and lead the way. I am learning to “Believe God” not just believe in Him! First time in the summer study but have also done 3 Beth Moore studies. Have my Ruth book on order and hope it comes before the next video. I love my Jesus!

      Mary Ellen Hale says:

Hi, Tracy! I’m glad to “meet” you! I’m happy to be joining the summer study for the first time, too, and I’m currently doing my third Beth study on Monday nights. I’m sorry for your time of loss, Tracy- four of my eight children have flown the nest, two more will within the next three years, and the youngest two will probably still be home when I’m going on to my eternal reward (I’ve enjoyed a loooong fertile season!) I share your dread but have seen the beauty on the other side. I’m even more sorry that your marriage is ending in divorce. I am contemplating that very course after nearly 24 very difficult years. We are not alone, Tracy! Our Lord is keeping us safe in His arms when everything is seemingly falling apart. Let’s enjoy our time in His Word together! Love, ME

We are a group of 23 women from Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada. We range in age from mid 20’s to late 50’s. some are single, some are married, some have children, some do not, and some have grand children! This is our 3rd summer joining the Siesta Summer Bible Study.

We had an excellent time together last night and it seems that the seasons of our lives our as varied as our demographics! These are some of the words that were used to describe our current season of life: homemaking, sadness, change, trusting, mother, in-between, volunteering, Nana, tired, busy, full, priorities, exciting, blessed, waiting, busy, chaos, challenging, lonely.

Although we had many varied descriptions of our situations our goals for this Bible study could be summed up as wanting to stay in the Word, quiet our hearts before Him, and learn to trust Him more completely as we delve in to the study of Ruth.

    Sandra says:

Hello! I’m doing this study solo. I live in Ontario, Canada. I’m a university student studying Psychology and Biblical Studies. My one word for this season of my life would be ’empty’- but ready to be filled by God. My goal for this study/this summer is to become completely dependent on God- to stop trying to control and plan everything, and let Him fill every part of me instead.

I am weary in life right now. I know God has the power to do anything that he chooses. I am just tired in the details of taking care of my family of 6 including a child who became paralyzed almost overnight. My goal is to be recharged in his promises and glean something in the process.
by that I mean that in dealing with my 7 year old daughters’ new paralysis and health issue I am not giving up!

Hi siestas (this really tickles me as my profession is a Spanish teacher),
How thrilled we are to be in God’s Word together this summer! Last summer we studied the Fruit of the Spirit, & are all back for some more blessed spiritual bathing. We are meeting in Chino Hills/Diamond Bar, CA (SO CAL). There are 6 of us, and possibly more. We are teachers, moms, marriage/family counselor, and women who seek to hear and obey our Lord’s calling through His Word.

  27. 827

145 women, online from 35 different states, with more than 1,600 visits to our site yesterday. We have 9 women who are participating in their first bible study. We also have three women who lead bible study groups. Some of the women in our group are recovering from recent illness, such as a double masectomy two weeks ago, a recent surgery, and many different cancers. We created the online study specifically for women like them…unable to attend church or home groups. We have some mother-daughter members, from different states, participating online together. Like most groups we are a diverse group in age, marital status, and bible study experience. Every woman in the study brings her own gift to the table-herself.

We invite anyone who is going solo to join our online group and participate in the discussion at WomensBibleCafe.com

    3. Goal for this summer – to LIVE out the phrase ‘trust in the Lord’.
    4. Embarrassing enough, even after decades of walking in the Lord, there are areas that I still do NOT trust the Lord with and STILL do what is right in my own eyes or strength! I want to finish as strong, wholly committed and trusting.

Glendale, AZ, 3 of us, meeting at Starbucks or Paradise Bakery in the evenings. We are on the missions team together at our church and want to get to know each other better. Ages are 26 to 33. One of us is single and waiting in God’s perfect time to bring His chosen man into her life and two of us are married with children. Our one word descriptions were CHAOS, DISCOVERY, and LISTENING. Our goals are to grow closer to Christ and to keep ourselves in the Word. We discussed what is going on in our lives at this time. One of our members is having a difficult time adjusting back to life after recently being on her 2nd mission trip to a Haitian orphanage. Her heart is breaking for the children she had to leave behind and struggles with what she can do to help. Another member is feeling overwhelmed with working part time from home, being a small group leader, and raising 4 children (6,5,3,&2) all at the same time. The third member is trying to acclimate to newly becoming a stay at home mom to three girls and follow God’s lead by leading a “motherhood” bible study at church. We are SO EXCITED to be part of this study, we can’t stand it!!

31 Eastern south central illinois (would have to be from around here for that to make sense) and no one so far even remotely close to me 🙂 Married for 12 years.5 daughters ages 6-12..Going it solo but have an accountability partner on facebook 🙂
Word:frazzled. My husband is away for work 4 days a week so I am going it (parenting)solo most of the time(ps given me even more respect for single parents!)Getting uber stressed at times and need to just chill and listen to God’s voice.
Funny story I feel I need to share about that…My six year old is MILES ahead of many others her age. So we have the most interesting conversations…The other day she ask me how God talks to us. I told her we have to listen very closely and be in his word and she said “I know he talks to me all the time and told me to ask you so you remember” Grinned and walked away. We have LOTS of conversations in spiritual matters though. (totally off the subject but is there a bible study for 6 year olds? Or children slightly older?)
I am glad we have his word to guide us and we have accountability not to do what’s right in our own eyes as we don’t see the “planks” that are in them.
Whoops I think I went over a paragraph as well.

Hi again everyone, I didn’t really answer the questions on my first post since at that time I didn’t know if I would be able to get the workbook. Now thanks to Amanda I will, thanks again!!
I am going solo and would be like to know if there are any single moms out there in their 30’s who may want to discuss the study thru email. I find it so difficult to find women who are in my same “stage” of life, lol.
    My one word is cautious.
My goal is to grow closer to God and make it thru the whole study without giving up just because I get a little uncomfortable with what God is trying to show me.
Here’s my email if anyone wants to not go quite so solo:
    [email protected]

    1) I am going solo in Mechanicsville, VA. I am married and a mother to 2 active boys. With our schedules, no break from sports in the summer here (not my choice) with basketball & lacrosse, VBS, camps, and vacation in there; I am thrilled to be able to stay in the Word with the siestas.
    2) Changes
    3) To me, being in the Word of God is what gets me through some days. Love learning how I can be more fruitful to Him and how he can use me for His amazing plan. I would be doing a study of some sort but this way I get to ‘connect’ with wonderful women from the blog and go through this together, especially at this season of my life, the last thing I need is to isolate.
    4) Going through life like we have authority is a recipe for terrible results to anyone. I have been hurt deeply by those who satisfy personal desires at all cost. I love the verses in Jeremiah to remind me that my trust is in Him and our treasures are from when we recieve and obey God’s Word on our standards, morals, truths, and convictions.

    Amy says:

I’m doing the study solo this summer in Grand Rapids, Michigan. I’m married, the mommy to two little boys (ages 2 and 3.5 months). I also work part time, so the word I’d choose to describe my life right now is “torn” – torn between wanting to be with my little ones more and work I enjoy (and feel a little guilty for enjoying). Since this season of my life is so very busy, my goal for the study is twofold: (1) to rest in God’s Word and (2) finish the study! As for the verses, the word that comes to mind is chaos – that’s what will happen in my heart, mind and spirit if I simply did what was right in my own eyes. And that chaos would very quickly lead me away from the Lord.

Our small group is meeting in West Milton, OH on Wednesday nights; there are 12 of us!!!! We range in age from early 30’s to late 50’s. As everyone went around the room to say their one word that characterizes their life, alot of them said “transition”; meaning coming out of one phase of life into another. My favorite word from one Siesta was “Cheese”! Her father who is 91 lives with her and her husband as well as her daughter and 2 grandchildren! She values life! PTL! The great thing about our group is we are all from the same church. Our church body has gone through some really tough trials the last 2 years; we are blessed to see God bringing our women together around His word! All of us agreed that we need His word, want to grow closer to Him, AND get to know each other better through this Bible study!

One word that describes my life at the age of 27= BUSY

I wish I could add a modifier to that word, and if that was part of the directions it would be “insanely – busy”. God is good, and life terries on. We all go through seasons, as my friend D would say, and I am in busy season. I have been married 1 year and a few months, no kids, and have a busy job in Chicago. I am totally pumped to be in fellowship with all you ladies going through this awesome study on Ruth, so thank you Beth. Your studies have been an aid and a life preservers to keep us a float living in the city for myself and many of my small group gals.

    4. Doing as I see fit always leads to a mess & loss.

    Chicago, IL
We met in my favorite room of a friend’s house- the sun porch
Just the two of us, both single- we talked at length (we ended around 2am) about the Judges verse, “everyone did as he saw fit” how that plays out in our culture and how we are affected by it too…our words…SURPRISED and STEADFAST.

Praying the Lord richly blesses the community of Siestas this summer as we study Ruth together! What a blessing already!!

My group is so far a group of five from Jackson, Missouri. Went through about half of the responses and didn’t see anyone from Missouri. But it amazes me how many women are truly connecting through this blog. I want that.

Our group meets on Thursday afternoons and we are from all in different places in our lives. Eager to see how God works.

I read through them until five this morning and there was a Kansas City and some St.Louis and somewhere smaller that I don’t remember 🙂

I was just reading at first to see if I could find anyone near me. Closest was an hour and a half away so then I was reading more for the responses and I was thinking of how thankful I am for the moderators that read through all of these posts! It took me a bit over five hours and I found tonight some that I overlooked.
Praying for the staff and their reading glasses 🙂

I was not going to sign in because I felt silly going solo and then I read Beth’s post this morning and felt a need to connect to this great community.

I am 41, married, 2 kids (10 and 6) and work full time as a nurse. I live in KY.

One word to describe where I’m at right now–stressed.

Something I need to give up–control.

Excited to get into this study. I’ve been too “busy” to spend much time with God lately and have begun to really notice how much I need Him. Thanks for hosting this again Beth!

HOUSTON, TEXAS!! We are a group of two ladies that work together. One word describes both of our lives at the moment and that is chaotic. We are both excited to begin this study and both hope to deepen our prayer life through this study.

I’m flying solo in this my first siesta-ville Bible Study. I live in North Little Rock, Arkansas, am a stay at home mom of three, married for 16 years. I guess my word would be busy. Which is why I’m doing this solo! My husband works long hours and it is difficult to find a babysitter during the summer. But I’m praying that God will speak to me deeply through His Word and all of you!

Going solo in Pampa, Texas. This is my 3rd Siesta Summer Bible study but the first going at it solo!

    1. My ONE WORD would be OVERWHELMED! I heard Beth once say in a study that she was OVER-STINKIN-WHELMED and I think that is exactly what I might be. At 45 years of age, in May, I was diagnosed with a rare form of Muscular Dystrophy. I have been perfecly healthy to this point and it struck me a year ago with no answers to why I was falling and loosing the use of my legs. The diagnosis is a hard one to grasp because we have been told there is no cure or treatment and the doctors dont even know how it will progress OR if it will so that leads me to Number 2…

    2. What I want from this bible study is to learn to really trust in who my Heavenly Father says He is. I actually wrote down that I wanted to find God’s will and purpose in my life at this time. Is that too much to ask from a bible study? 🙂 God, you are so big!

    3. WOW! The scripture in Jeremiah 17:7 & 8 was a full circle moment for me. I memorized that very verse last year at this time and had a note beside it in my bible…scripture memory 6-15-2009! (Im still memorizing scripute Beth~you changed me forever..its my living breath!) My siesta that I memorize scripture with gave me a picture that she had taken while vacationing in Colorado of a huge pine tree, planted right on a roaring river with this verse attached. I have looked at that picture many a times and said “Lord, I will trust in you even in this diagnosis!”

Ok, enough! I believe in the great healer, the one true God and I know He has great plans for me so I am believing through Ruth He will show himself in mightly ways in my life and your Siesta’s! This is going to be a great study! Cant wait to dig in deeper and trust GOD!
