Siesta Summer Bible Study 3 Launch

Hey, Siestas! It’s time for summer Bible study! For the sake of rich fellowship and vital accountability, we hope as many of you as possible are meeting with small groups and on every other Tuesday or as close to Tuesdays as possible. You are absolutely welcome to join us solo but try to stay as involved as possible in the discussions so that you’ll feel plugged in. This is what you’ll do every other Tuesday:

1. Watch the video so you’ll have your instructions for your gathering or for your solo experience. I will always put the bare bones of the instructions in writing on the post just in case there is a video malfunction.

2. (You will find these instructions reiterated in this post because it’s fundamental to the experience.) If you are in a small group, designate one person who will write a comment to this post briefly telling us about your group and your discussion. It can be a different person each week or the same. START THE COMMENT WITH THE CITY, THE NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS AND LOCATION THEN DESCRIBE YOUR GROUP AND ADD SOMETHING ABOUT YOUR DISCUSSION. For instance, I am meeting with my Monday staff members so my comment will begin with:

Houston, Texas; 8 of us; Meeting at Living Proof Ministries. Our group is primarily made up of…The main part of our discussion was about…(And so forth).

3. If you are going solo, your comment will become the way you complete the assignments. In other words, you’ll see that I ask you to describe this season of your life in one word. In your comment, tell us what that one word would be.

Make the length of it one good, descriptive paragraph. Try not to write too much or readers will tend to skip over it.

This clip is to give instructions for your first gathering – the one you are hopefully having today or in next 24 hours. You can watch this together or your leader can watch it and pass on your instructions.

Summer Bible Study – Week 1 from LPV on Vimeo.

I so hope that makes sense! Now, here are the written instructions for your gathering just in case you can’t get the video to work. Welcome aboard! May God take us on a journey that we’ll treasure for many years. Let’s find the Ruth in us, Siestas!

Today in your small group, here’s what I am asking you to do:

1. If you don’t know each other, spend a few minutes finding out some basic biographical information about one another.  (Single, married, still in school, or in a career. Children, no children. The regular stuff. Keep in mind that everybody fits in Bible study. You don’t need to all be alike. In fact, the more alike you all are, the less you may sharpen one another.)

2. Each of you in your small group characterize your life in this present season in ONE WORD.  Have the leader record these.

3. Each of you in your small group share one specific goal you have this summer for being in Bible study. Have the leader record these, too.

4. Look at the very last verse of the Book of Judges (Judges 21:25) because of its placement just prior to the book we’ll study together this summer. Discuss several specific reasons why doing what each of us sees fit at any given time could be dangerous. After several minutes of discussion, read Jeremiah 17:7-14 and talk about how this segment relates or contrasts to Judges 21:25.

Leader: this is very important. You get back on within 24 hours of meeting and write a brief summation of your group time as a comment to this post. Tell us how many came, your city, and something about your group or your group discussion.

*UPDATE*
Here’s a link to the first chapter of Ruth in case you don’t have your workbook yet.

I’m Kathie from South Carolina. Will be going solo this summer. I would say my season in life is frustrated. But I am persuaded that nothing shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

    Solo Gainesville, GA

One word for this season would be ‘searching’ and my goal for this bible study is to become closer to God.

We are a group of women connected by way of a private Christian school in the greater Seattle area, either parent, staff member or both. Age range is mid 20s to late 40s. 12 of us are meeting. I think prevelant sentiment last night was to learn about Ruth, draw closer to God and each other. We are all looking forward to this experience!

    Linda says:

Madison, Ohio; 6 of us; meeting at Crossroads Community Church; our group has women ranging in age from early 20s to mid 50s; our seasons consist of homework (that’s right, homework), content, confused, and absorbing (don’t you love absorbing?) Despite age differences and different seasons, we found some similarities within the group that showed us God has a reason for us to be together as a group; loved the discussion about the Judges and Jeremiah verses. We are so excited to be together in the Word this summer.

Jacksonville, FL; so far there are 4 of us but we are hoping for some more soon. We range in age from 30’s to 50’s but you couldn’t tell it. We are all on a journey to find whatever it is that God is bring with this bible study. We all have a little of choas and uknown in our lives so we are giving it to God to work out lol. He is so much better at all of this than us so we thought we would read, study and pray and let him lead us where we need to go. I personally want to deeping my walk in the Word and the others are looking for answers, security in the Word, faith and anything else God wants to throw our way. We can’t wait to get on the homework:-)

    Sherri says:

Atlanta, GA (actually small town west of downtown); solo; 40; single (praying that will change this year); almost 90 days at a new job
One word — needing. Needing someone to hold me accountable. Needing to get back on track w/Bible study, prayer, worship. Needing to be consistent in my walk. Needing to know if I’m where I’m supposed to be and if not, needing to know how to get where I’m supposed to be. Needing peace about a serious situation happening next month. Needing most of all more of HIM. Goal — to go deeper, to remain deeper, to live deeper — in His love, grace, mercy, His word.
As for the verse in Judges, I struggle with “thinking” as I see fit rather than having the mind of Christ. Oh what a struggle to take the thoughts captive.
God bless each Siesta on this journey. May He be glorified.

HOWDY from Billings, MT! We have a group of 14 sisters in Christ gathered from 3 different churches around town and we had a wonderful evening filled with laughter, tears and Kelly’s Chicken Enchilada’s which I HIGHLY recommend! We’re all looking forward to diving into our books and Bibles as everyone expressed a strong desire to stay in the Word this summer.

REALLY looking forward to July 6th!

    Diane Hewes says:

Hi… i am going solo in Amherst NY – i am an empty-nester, celebrating my 33rd anniv. to my high school honey on Friday. i have taught ALL of Beth’s studies over the last 12 yrs or so but have been through some life trials in the last 4 yrs. that have interfered with my consistency. After my husband suffered a debilitating attack of arthritis that turned our lives upside down, he then lost his job of 23 yrs. in the automotive industry. We have been living through the trevails of unemployment for the last 4 yrs. – i am now the main breadwinner, after 22 yrs. as a homemaker. What lessons i have learned !
I describe my life in a word as TRUSTING -living day by day totally dependant as never before. As i love to say, “what a ride !” I am praying for the fortitude to resume a consistent daily time – severely lacking as i struggle to learn a new life style balancing work, home, and family needs.

  11. 711
    Dani says:

My name is Dani I am 24 years old, I am currently in Denver, CO until the end of July. I am doing this study solo.

    My life in one word..”unsure”

My goal: to dig deeper and learn something new. To grow in my faith.

  12. 712
    Lisa says:

    Hi Siestas!!
    1. I’m Lisa and I live in Tennessee (originally from Virginia). I am married and have a 9 year old son. I work for the public school system as a Teacher’s Aid. I will be doing this study by myself.

    2. At present – I would say I am disengaged. A tragedy last summer left me feeling numb and I’m struggling to overcome it.

    3. My goal for this study is to reconnect with God and “feel” again.

    4. I have learned the hard way that what I see as “fit” just isn’t most of the time – God must be in control because I’m no good at it.

  13. 713
    Robin says:

9 Ladies from Everett Washington signing in. Words that describe us in this season of our lives are: Juggling, Waiting, Bizarre, Caretaking, Healing, Content, Focused, Transition, and Tough Love. We are all looking forward to seeing what God has for us in this study.

    Sharon says:

    Lakeway Texas
    7 regulars and 1 visitor
We had a wonderful time of visiting as we shared our meal. Some of the one word characterizations were SEARCHING, THANKFUL, SEEKING, WAITING, PRAYING, TRANSITIONING. We believed that the time of Judges 21:25 must have been a time similar to what is happening in our country today where so many seem to be living for themselves. How dangerous it is to turn away from God and follow our deceitful heart. We will be cursed and put to shame if we don’t allow God to heal and save us.

  15. 715
    Janet says:

    Solo in Goodlettsville

    Transition

Divorced, single mom of two teen-aged daugthers, middle school teacher, and blesssed child of God.

I want to live my life in accordance to God’s divine will so that others might learn of God’s love.

      Kathy B says:

      Janet,
Are you in Goodletsville, TN? I’m in Hendersonville and our group hasn’t started yet. We’re having our first meeting tonight at 6pm in my home. (nothing like being a little tardy). If you’re interested in joining a group, you’re more than welcome. Just email me and I’ll give you any details you need: [email protected]
      If not, no worries. Blessings,

Mother (51) and daughter (30) in Warren, Maine! Even though Ruth and Naomi were mother and daughter-in-law, we are already appreciating the significance of studying this particular book of the Bible TOGETHER. We’ve never done the siesta summer bible study, but can’t wait to get into Ruth with this community. We want to keep growing through the summer and see what the Lord has in store for us. Blessings to all the other siestas!

    Christie says:

I am so excited to be in this Bible Study. In the past
24 hours, our baby has graduated from grade school, and
now we have learned my dear sister’s husband (52) has had
a stroke today, so I have not done the first lesson. But, I want to ask for prayers for Jeff and Mary. The word which describes this season would have to be fear,
but I know this is not a time to fear. Thank you for your prayers. God is so great.

  18. 718
    Marilyn Wirsz says:

Tampa, Florida; party of 2, one single, one married no children. Hopefully by the next gathering we will meet in my home. One of us a Methodist, one a Presbyterian.
Two personalities as different as night and day, worked at the same music store for many years but have recently begun nurturing a deeper friendship. By participating in this study we hope that not only our friendship will deepen, but God will give us the strength to face the many uncertainties that lie in each of our lives.

  19. 719
    Amy says:

Tulsa, OK doing this via Skype with my best pal Holly in fairbanks, AK.

My word to describe my season in life is “floating”. As in, not always standing firm in God’s word, and just floating through life with my 1 year old daughter and my husband who works 6 days a week.

I’m hoping this study will bring me back to the Bible and rekindle my relationship with God…and help build an even stronger friendship with Holly!

  20. 720
    Susan Knowles says:

Bradenton, FL. 16 of us. Meeting at my house (huge blessing to be able to host). We are made up of mostly 50-somethings, afew younger and a few older(70? didn’t ask) some work, some retired, some with grands, some on the verge of empty-nest. We had 5 new ladies added to a group that studied together in the spring. While updating our class list to add new ladies and phone numbers we had some fun comments about our given names and nicknames and how we got them that broke the ice and helped us bond with newcomers. We had words like GRATEFUL and BLESSED and BLESSEST(BLESSED had already been used) but most often we heard words like TRANSITIONAL, UNCERTAIN, CONFUSED. We also heard HOPEFUL, WONDERING and CONTROLLED(by God). Our discussion on goals for this study was good with alot of agreement about the need foraccountability and fellowship. We also had a discussion about REDEMPTION using Col. 1:13-14. Wealso decided to meet weekly instead of bi-weekly but we’ll skip July 7 (too many vacations) then be a week behind. We’re PUMPED!!

    Kristin Amato says:

    1. Kristin…Wife to an amazing husband (army officer); mother of 3-2 girls (5, 3), 1 boy (21 months);6th grade teacher.

    2. One word to describe this season of my life…BUSY!!! Also…Spiritually-HUNGRY…so hungry for the Word of God and ready for my life and attitude to be altered by the grace of God!

    3. Goal-to draw nearer to Him and maintain a level of intimacy with my Savior that I know He longs for with me.

    4. Going to read Judges and Jeremiah now. =)

    Mica Craig says:

Lawrenceville, GA 47 years old with 2 grown children and married to my highschool sweetheart for 28 years. Going solo. My one word to sum up this season of my life is: grateful. I feel so grateful for all that I have. Love, Children, Home, Job, Church, Friends….. The past 10 years have been anything but easy. I am at a point to acutally say I am grateful for the “now”.

    Julie says:

Dear Beth, as I write this comment the thunder is rumbling, the rain is pelting our windows, the lightning is amazing and the winds are horrendous. Storms like these bring a glimpse of the power of God.

I so need this study . . . I love the book of Ruth and was so excited for this study to begin.

Beth, I sat down to write my letter to God and sat there empty and overwhelmed all at the same time. There are no tragedies or anything like that, actually things are really good . . . but it is during those good times that it is easy to put God on the back burner. I have failed in daily quiet time, I have failed God.

A former Pastor’s Wife went home to Heaven this past week and as her Pastor husband wrote an email to let everyone know. In the email, he spoke of her dedication to her LORD and let all know she fought the good fight and never lost sight of Christ. I am quite certain she will hear . . . Well Done My Good and Faithful Servant.

The email, the Bible Study and you all hit me straight between my eyes . . . if I were to die tonight, I know I would be immediately in Heaven as I accepted Jesus Christ as Savior 39 years ago at the tender age of six. However, I would be ashamed of my lack of communication with God . . . I could make all of the excuses in the world, but nothing changes the fact that God and Christ were not my focus . . . I would not hear “Well Done My Good and Faithful Servant.

With God’s help and much prayer I am beginning anew . . . Siesta Momma, Thank You!

      Julie,
This so touched my heart! I, too, struggle with finding quiet time with God, and this is why I chose to start this Bible study. I am also doing the Revelation one with a group at church… I’ll be praying for you… you pray for me, too… and through this blog hopefully we will all draw closer to God!

    Blaire says:

Hi! I’m Blaire from Irving, Tx and I’m flying solo. I’m 27 and married to my childhood sweetheart.
My current life situation in one word is – peaceful. I’m a teacher and I’m off for summer break so I’m getting in lots of rest and much needed relaxation. Although I’ve been sick for about a year, and I lost my mother-in-law this past February, I feel very peaceful right now.
My goal for this Bible study is to get into a routine of being in the Word each and everyday, and learning to pray for everything.
I’m very encouraged and looking forward to discovering what God has in store for me.

Lu – How i identify with your “finding a new normal” !!! I never fully appreciated what that could mean until my 2 kids grad. and moved out of state with jobs – and i had to get a job to carry us through unemployment. Ah, who thought the 50’s could be so tumultuous ! I would love to keep up with you as Ruth speaks to you during a similar life-stage as mine…..

    Liz Rudolph says:

We are located in Denver,NC. There was 7 of us and we meet at a very cool coffee shop. Our time was awesome!!! Our ages range from 24-40 something. We laughed a lot and had a great time getting to know one another.

Here are all of our present seasons: business, nursing, connected, thankful, blessed, trusting, overwhelemed. I love our group so much already. Expecting God to do great things in all of our lives.

We love you Beth and your two sweet girls!! Thank you for being so loving and being our MaMa!!!! BTW, you have the cutiest clothes a girl could ever want:) We all need to fly to Houston for some “real” shopping!

Six in Naples, Florida- all of us excited for our 3rd summer of study together! Right now, we are waiting, resting, persevering, and trusting. We are looking forward to being together and the accountability of the small group as we study the Word. Wondering what God will do this summer…

    Starr says:

    Asheboro, North Carolina

There are 5 Siestas meeting in my home here in this part of Siestaville.

The words that define our lives during this season are storm, stale, turmoil x 2 and fruitful.

The atmosphere was filled with excitement and the anticipation of learning to study God’s Word and apply it to our lives. Most have never done a study by Beth so it is my joy and express privilege to lead them in this new endeavor.

TRUST was our thrust! With many experiencing great heartache and difficulty we were encouraged to be reminded that we have a heavenly Father who will see us through to a time of blessing as we follow His ways and not ours.

Praise Him for such a time as this!!!

    Cambridge, MN
9 of us – single/married, children/no children, student/teacher/funeral director/nurses/children’s ministry leader, in our 30s/40s/50s, grew up knowing Christ/recently accepted Him as Savior,

We will be meeting Tuesday evenings… we will take turns hosting & providing treats

Most of us go to First Baptist Church in Cambridge. It was GREAT to be back together again! Our group is the same as last summer (minus one). Some of us had met throughout the year, but there was something special about all being together & reconnecting last night. It reconfirmed that God has a purpose in bringing each of us to our specific group.
The words that described us were energized, rollercoaster, “Peanut M & M”, getting healthy, grandmother, transition, blessed, and chaotic. We are looking forward to seeing how God uses this study to encourage, challenge and grow each of us!

  31. 731
    Casey says:

    Solo, New Baltimore, MI
    1. My basic spot in life is a very busy mother. I am a 26 year old mother of two very high energy boys (4 & 6), I am a mother, wife, part time worker, etc, etc very involved in church and along with that trying to be a spreader and follower and lover of Jesus.
    2. One word = busy!
    3. The goal for me is to grow closer to God, trying to juggle so many things with kids can be so exhausting it is very hard for me to stay active in the word unless I am in a study.
I am doing the study alone for the summer but have a group of girls who want to start it in the fall so I thought I would go ahead and do it first that way I could savor it the most!

      \Diane H. says:

Jamie – you are the closest one to western ny i could find !!! I find myself in a similar life stage as you – an empty-nester for 5 yrs. and still trying to find balance as a working , some say displaced, homemaker. Also caring for 3 parents as time and age marches on in an unkindly manner. I look forward to hearing how God is speaking to you and directing you through Ruth !

North Aurora IL – Group of 11 (10 were there Tuesday nite – the other will join us next time, when she’s back from vacation) We range in age from mid-20s to early 50s. Each of us knows the Lord and is happy for this opportunity to grow closer to Him. I was so encouraged by the openness of our group. I truly know that Spirit was with us and am anticipating great things through this study and being with this wonderful group of women – some that I know and some that I can’t wait to get to know better.

    Livonia, Michigan

Presently – “Pruning” – God is revealing ways He wants me to change to serve Him better. It hurts at times as He shows me areas of sin in my heart but I know He will give me the grace to overcome!

When we do what “is right in our own eyes” it is so easy to justify ourselves and not use the mirror of His Word. We just see what we want instead of who He wants us to be.

Going Solo to increase my time at home with my family. I want to use the time wisely to draw close to Jesus. To dig deeper in my relationship with Him. I want to passionately serve God instead of being lukewarm!

    Tricia O'Neal says:

We are a group of 5 ladies in Temple, TX. Words that describe us this season are satisfied, quite-time, yielded, busy and blessed! A common theme in our discussion was the desire for being accountable to one another and disciplined in the WORD. We are excited to dig in!

    Hi Siestas!
This is my first comment, so hope I’m doing this right. 🙂 We are meeting as a group of four women in Sioux Falls, SD. We are first time siestas and are so excited for what God has planned through this study! We are all stay-home moms in our early to late 30’s. The one-word descriptions for our group were blurry, budy, blessed and transitioning. Our goals include staying daily in the Word, connecting in a deep way with each other and accountability. Thanks for having us, Beth!

  39. 739
    Suzanne says:

From Decatur, Texas, 50’s, teacher, going solo this summer, present season would be “Determined”! Determined to stay in the Word of God, determined to trust Him in present situations and determined to wait for his perfect will. I am spending my summer with my recently retired hubby of 31 years!! Determined to get rid of clutter ( physical as well as spiritual!LOL) As far as the 25th verse in Judges; there was no king in Israel, no direction, the people just worked it out for themselves. In Jeremiah 17:7-14 there are two types of trust, trust in people and trust in the Lord. It’s a condition of the heart…as believers we can easily fall into a routine of forsaking and forgeting God. We need to choose to seek Him daily and let Him mold our hearts!

  40. 740
    Jeannette says:

    Hi Beth,

I am very excited to be part of the summer study. I am participating with a dear friend and also with two of my sisters via email. I am from Ellicott City, MD, married with two fabulous sons, (20 yrs and almost 16 yrs). This is my first time to post but I have been reading the blog for a while now.

I would use the word “exhausted” to describe my life – exhausted both physically, mentally, and emotionally. I am looking forward to “having my cup filled” by the Lord. The verse from Judges really has been in my thoughts as I think back over the past years as I have had to make lots of decisions since my husband has been disabled. Wow – how I need to be guided by the word and not what I think is right!

The sweet fellowship on this blog has been a real encouragement. Grateful to be a part!

    Jennifer says:

Hi! I’m part of a group of 7 women in our late 20’s and early 30’s. We live in Huntsville, AL. We had a great group discussion tonight focusing on on how if we are firmly rooted in Christ we have hope and don’t have as much fear and worry as those without Christ and how we are thankful that we have God to follow because without His guidance we would be lonely, lost, and unhappy following our own feelings.

    Solo; Winterville, NC

The one word to sum up this season of my life would be “Trusting”. I am a Mommy of two precious little girls and a wife to a High School Teacher & Coach. Just trusting that we are the best example of Jesus to these two precious little girls!

Tanya and Alta agreed our goal is to;stay in the Word, know God better and love Him more with this summer study of Ruth.
We didn’t get to meet together this time. We plan to share our homes and have a brunch for the four group meetings. Praying God will give us special time with her daughters. We love you Beth and also LPM and Kelly”)

My one word is waiting. Waiting to hear what the Lord has for my life. My second word would be struggling to grasp hold of His plans and figure out His perfect will for my life. It’s so hard sometimes. I actually broke down last night from the weight of this pain. I’m feeling stronger today and hoping to learn so much during this study.

season–very busy! I love summers as a teacher and mom life slows down a little but I also get lazy and am looking forward to being in the word consistently.
2 teenage girls 3 years apart–the oldest leaves for college in August and the little sister is already grieving!

    Debi says:

Planned on doing the study with a co-worker at my church who has said she wants to do so but does not have computer access – tomorrow is Thursday and we just have not managed a time to view together.

My word – arid, burdened (so, okay that’s two words!) Am almost 60, lifetime single and never regretted; helped raise 6 nephews and been the “responsible child” for entire family. As a social worker by career (now retired) and psychology degree, I tend to be the “ear” for everyone. Never have “fit in” anywhere especially women groups who tend to talk LOTS about husbands, babies, etc. Could not have children and not real comfortable with sharing personal details with anyone. Lost my father 4 years ago (dearest friend, my rock), my brother 20 years ago and have found both those roles thrust upon my shoulders (always knew there was a reason God gave me “football shoulders”!!). Major life decisions hanging over my head for both my mother and my disabled sister; lost a job almost 2 years ago – 18 months of unemployment and financially stupid so now trying to un-bury.

Reason for study – I KNOW I need to get into the word on a regular basis, have a tendency to start reading scripture and either get side-tracked (Adult Attention Deficit Disorder I think) or am one of those people who in reading the same “book” go – “oh yeah, read that before – what’s next?” Too many “jobs” that I’ve taken on as can’t deal with hours of discussion or lack of responsibility, tend to be impatient, judgmental, all those ugly tendencies. Hope this study can get me on track, open up God’s word in a way that will “stick” and lead me forward. Not much of a group person or one who easily shares so this may be the first and last. Through life experiences, VERY skeptical but want to trust but not be hurt or betrayed – AGAIN.

    Megan says:

Our group is our mom and her 3 daughters. Mom (age 62) and Barbara (age 29) are in Orrville, OH, Megan (age 33) is in Columbus, OH and Susan (age 31) is technically in Austin, TX but works in CA and travels a lot (which is why we’re late posting. We’re waiting on her responses. But she just got home from Rome so we’re cutting her some slack). We did this last year and loved how it worked for us. We each got online sometime on Tues and then emailed our responses to everyone. They would trickle in throughout the day and it was so fun for us to get to share things over email since it would be impossible for us to do a study together in person.

Mom – thankful, Megan – ball, Barbara – change.

A funny note about us. We used to be a very girly family. But then we all got married and I have 2 boys, Barbara has 2 boys and Susan found out she is having a boy this fall. The boys have taken over.

Group of 3, Shaker Heights, Ohio (Melissa, Bridget & Amy)

We are a group of three believers who have all been transplanted into our city and on our street from three different locations within the past two years. We all have three children, too! We will be meeting weekly because we don’t want to wait two weeks after tonight’s discussion! We are all wanting to have accountability and to have a group where we can share our hearts openly. The words we used to describe ourselves tonight are Unfocused, Content and Lonely. We are excited to see how God reveals Himself to us through this time together. So thankful that we have the King described in Jeremiah vs. the people who had no king in Judges. Bridget brought up a great visual…it’s like the streets in India. Apparently, there are some Youtube videos that show the chaos of the streets in India where traffic is going in any and all directions because there are no traffic laws. It was a great visual to imagining a world without a king and everyone doing what they see fit.
