Siesta Summer Bible Study 3 Launch

Hey, Siestas! It’s time for summer Bible study! For the sake of rich fellowship and vital accountability, we hope as many of you as possible are meeting with small groups and on every other Tuesday or as close to Tuesdays as possible. You are absolutely welcome to join us solo but try to stay as involved as possible in the discussions so that you’ll feel plugged in. This is what you’ll do every other Tuesday:

1. Watch the video so you’ll have your instructions for your gathering or for your solo experience. I will always put the bare bones of the instructions in writing on the post just in case there is a video malfunction.

2. (You will find these instructions reiterated in this post because it’s fundamental to the experience.) If you are in a small group, designate one person who will write a comment to this post briefly telling us about your group and your discussion. It can be a different person each week or the same. START THE COMMENT WITH THE CITY, THE NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS AND LOCATION THEN DESCRIBE YOUR GROUP AND ADD SOMETHING ABOUT YOUR DISCUSSION. For instance, I am meeting with my Monday staff members so my comment will begin with:

Houston, Texas; 8 of us; Meeting at Living Proof Ministries. Our group is primarily made up of…The main part of our discussion was about…(And so forth).

3. If you are going solo, your comment will become the way you complete the assignments. In other words, you’ll see that I ask you to describe this season of your life in one word. In your comment, tell us what that one word would be.

Make the length of it one good, descriptive paragraph. Try not to write too much or readers will tend to skip over it.

This clip is to give instructions for your first gathering – the one you are hopefully having today or in next 24 hours. You can watch this together or your leader can watch it and pass on your instructions.

Summer Bible Study – Week 1 from LPV on Vimeo.

I so hope that makes sense! Now, here are the written instructions for your gathering just in case you can’t get the video to work. Welcome aboard! May God take us on a journey that we’ll treasure for many years. Let’s find the Ruth in us, Siestas!

Today in your small group, here’s what I am asking you to do:

1. If you don’t know each other, spend a few minutes finding out some basic biographical information about one another.  (Single, married, still in school, or in a career. Children, no children. The regular stuff. Keep in mind that everybody fits in Bible study. You don’t need to all be alike. In fact, the more alike you all are, the less you may sharpen one another.)

2. Each of you in your small group characterize your life in this present season in ONE WORD.  Have the leader record these.

3. Each of you in your small group share one specific goal you have this summer for being in Bible study. Have the leader record these, too.

4. Look at the very last verse of the Book of Judges (Judges 21:25) because of its placement just prior to the book we’ll study together this summer. Discuss several specific reasons why doing what each of us sees fit at any given time could be dangerous. After several minutes of discussion, read Jeremiah 17:7-14 and talk about how this segment relates or contrasts to Judges 21:25.

Leader: this is very important. You get back on within 24 hours of meeting and write a brief summation of your group time as a comment to this post. Tell us how many came, your city, and something about your group or your group discussion.

*UPDATE*
Here’s a link to the first chapter of Ruth in case you don’t have your workbook yet.

Meeting at home, then we text, email, talk daily about it. Lisa 48yrs, divorced, 2 grown sons, new grown daughter & granddaughter. Current season:Spring. I’ve just come thru a very hard year where I’ve finally dealt with major loss in my life after 30 yrs of grief. I’ve been taught many things like where I got off God’s path. I’m now back on track, renewed, growing & so blessed in restoration. Pages 21 & 22 spoke volumns to me. Rhiannon is 30, married with a 7 yr old daughter. Season: Hurricane. Her goal/prayer is to hear from God concerning her life. She wants to get back on the path that God laid out for her. Jeremiah 17:14 really spoke to her that this is what God wants her to be doing right now. We both are amazed at what we have gotten from the first week!

I am going solo on this study myself. I am going through a season right now to where I need some new friends! I can find no better place than to be in the presence of other Godly women studying God’s word together. I think this will be grand!!!

I am new to all of this so I feel a little dumb. I forgot to post on my prior post the things I was asked to post!! Go figure, ya’ll are in for a laugh with this one here!! My one word is ~ chaotic ~ and my goal for this study is to hear a fresh word from the Holy Spirit. I can’t wait!!

my season: healing, hopeful, and HUNGRY

I just finished reading A Lineage of Grace by Francine Rivers. These women’s stories opened my heart up and made me so hungry for MORE of HIM. Each of them (Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, Bathsheba, and Mary) went through so much more than even I’ve come through, but they kept their eyes on God, their hearts turned toward Him, and He honored them. After reading the Unshaken part (Ruth’s story) I’m so excited to do this study. I can’t wait to hear what God’s going to be saying to me. I love Him so much.

3.Fall in love with Jesus again.

    4. Havoc reigns when people do as they “see fit”. Seeking and fulfilling one`s own needs and desires never satisfies the true desires of the heart. Our heart is only ever able to be fiiled by our creator. When we trust in the Lord to fulfil our desires and we choose to trust him we find peace and we grow stronger in His ways. The Lord see`s all things and he knows the motives and desires of every heart. Therefore we can trust that He has our best in mind even when the outcome is different to how we pictured it!

Going solo in Glennville,GA. Probably should have tried to get my Bible Study group to do this with me just didn’t feel like “being in charge”.
One word – waiting — waiting to see what God has for me to do now that I’m an empty nester (been waiting for a couple years – still now sure what I’m to be doing now that I’m not needed as much as a mom.)
waiting — for a good friend. waiting — for God to answer a prayer about my husband.
Goal – see what treasures God has for me in Ruth. (Already found the one about enduring in obedience)
When I do things my way it’s usually doesn’t work out best for me or those around me.

Kissimmee, Florida. I am also Solo. My place with Jesus right now is THIRSTY. You can only live a couple days without water.. so I am at a more critical place than hungry.
Heal me, O Lord and I will be healed; save me and I will be saved for you are the one I praise. Jeremiah 17:14

    Michelle says:

    Dear Beth and Fellow Sojourners,

I am traveling this journey solo. The wonderful group of women (and men) that I have the privilege to facilitate in Bible Study at our church chose not to meet together for the summer as they are all SUPER busy! Which just so happens to be the season of life that I am also in right now. I am 37 and have been married for 17 years to the man that both my earthly father and Heavenly Father have chosen for me. We have two daughters, ages 14 and 12. They both keep me busy running them here and there. I am the Minister of Music at our church and the “paperwork person” (if it has to do with paper, I do it) for a blessed construction company that I own with my husband and father. My goal for this summer Bible Study is #1 to actually finish it and #2 most importantly to spend more time soaking in the Word of God and His presence. According to Judges 21:25, the people were without a king and did what was right in their own eyes. I think that is very dangerous situation and can actually relate. For the most part, I work unsupervised and am left to my own devices on many things. This is not always a good thing since I am a terrible procrastinator. So I am praying that this summer I will be able to draw from the deep well of God and find the perseverance that I need to continue on my journey and finally become victorious in some areas. I thank all of you in advance for your assistance and loving support as we continue on this marvelous journey together.

With Jesus as My Guide be blessed!

    Lori Harbour says:

Fort Worth, TX; 2 of us; Meeting in my living room. Our group is made up of me and my sister-in-law. We talked about how doing what is right in your own eyes is a very selfish way to live, and is not God’s best. We want to immerse ourselves in the Word this summer, as well as learn how to become better wives and mothers. We are having faith that God will work wonders among us.

    Rachel says:

    Well hi there girls,

I’m new to this community–this is my first post, and I don’t know anyone in this community (yet), so it’s just me, but I’m really fascinated by the excitement I see between all of you, and the accountability you provide each other is a really beautiful picture of what the Kingdom of God is supposed to look like. I’m from Columbus, Ohio; I’m single, 24 years old, and I’m a social worker who counsels kids and families. I’m also a small group leader at a very large, very wonderful church here in Columbus (it’s my home more than my house is my home–:) ). One word to describe my life right now? (Good luck!) “Overwhelmed.” There it is. (See, here’s the problem–now I want to describe that word more with all these qualifiers and such.) My goal for this experience is to refocus on God Himself–not what He can do for me, not what He’s doing through me in ministry, not what Christians sometimes try to make Him into–but Him Himself as He really is, as He reveals Himself through His Word to us. In response to the texts we were assigned, it appears that both illustrate a culture where anarchy took over where guidance was either lacking or totally ignored. Generally speaking, “anarchy” as a term has never gotten very good reviews–we think of independence as a positive thing in our society but when everyone exercises it in unwise ways we have chaos, which is hurtful to everyone involved. This is why we need the guidance and authority of Jesus, because we don’t know what’s best for us despite our self-deluded thought patterns. We need Him to save us from our SELVES more than almost anything. So let’s go. I’m in.

    Cathy says:

I’m Cathy and going solo — live in Lincoln, Nebraska. My one word description would be “waiting.” My husband and I are in our late 50’s and retired — not sure of what God wants us to be doing with our lives….thus, the “waiting.” My goal for the study is to sharpen my focus on Jesus.

    Joyce says:

Hi everyone …………. we are 5 women in Sparks, Nv. meeting in my living room (so far). We are a group that meets in the fall and spring, with 3 other groups, at our Church and do whatever series we haven’t done of Beth’s during those times. We are all hungry to stay in the Word and to continue fellowship with one another through-out the dry summer months. We have been together a long time now and we need to stay “connected” with each other and with our Lord. I was following this blog, watching the video and got “moved” to contact my “ladies” to see if they’d like to do this with me this summer and boy did they jump at the chance – God is so good !!!!!!!!
We are a little behind as I just ordered their books this week-end – actually put this together in 2 days 🙂 But we’ll get caught up and am so excited to be sharing this with them. Thank you so much for keeping us going during the summer months Beth.
Loving all of my Siesta’s on this wonderful blog.

    Careuy Pleau says:

I was going to wait to start until my book arrived but I am glad I didn’t! Thank you so much for putting the first chapter. God must really want me to be here, with my computer down, having to use a friend’s computer means really having to make time accompanied with not having the book…well, all I can say, is that I am enjoying every minute of my study so far. I hope the UPS man isn’t far behind with my book!

    Nancy Cassity says:

Hello from beautiful Highlands Ranch, Colorado! There are 4 of us meeting at my house on Friday mornings. We have a 51 year old grandma of 5, a 47 year old mom of two boys; 18 and 13, and I am a 48 year old mom of a 9 year old girl. Our “young blood” is a wonderful 28 year old who is believing to be blessed in the mom department! We had a wonderful time together and are really looking forward to growing in God and enjoying each others company and eating some great food! We are all facing specific difficulties and we feel so blessed to have this outlet during the summer months to met and be uplifted by God’s truths and each other!

    Hey Everyone!

Suzie, from South Carolina checking in a few days late but ready all ready to go! I’m doing the study solo this summer…everyone seems to be on vacation but us. 😀

My one word description of this season of my life would be, evolving. I’ve been at a standstill for several years, not going forward or backwards and being very comfortable where I was at but I’m ready to start putting one foot in front on the other again and get moving.

So my goal is simple…to start taking those first steps. I’m glad to see so many will be coming along side of me!

Sheridan, WY; 10 of us; Cornerstone Church
We are a group of probably 50 to 60 year old women. We did not all know each other, but everyone shared from their heart. It was wonderful. Striving, hopeful, faith, searching, abiding, peaceful, growing, trusting, stretched, changed were our single words to describe the seasons we are in our lives. Looking forward to a daily study, didication and discipline — growing and living in the moment, not missing what God is teaching. Always knowing God’s ways are not the world’s ways. Recipes will be fun!

    Sandy says:

Capo Beach, California; 3-4 of us. We were unable to get together the first week but future meetings will be Wednesday evenings, rotating our meeting place between homes and the beach. Our group is made up of women who attend our church’s Wednesday night Bible Study. (The last one we did was Beth’s Study on Esther!) We wanted to continue with a Bible Study through the summer – until our church’s Women’s Ministry begins again in the Fall. We call ourselves the “Hungry Saints.” We are saved and wrapped in God’s Grace! We are looking forward to growing in our walk with the Lord through this study.

  23. 1173

Heather, going solo in Mosinee WI.
I am 36, a mother of 2 (6yr old boy and 4 yr old girl) and married.

Word to describe me…. longing or desire

I am struggling with depression again (its been up and down for years, and this past 6 months has really been bad again). I am watching a dear friend of mine watch her husband die of colon cancer. Our church is going through extreme transitions and under the surface struggles right now…. Many other heavy things, yet I know God is doing something…. And I am so longing to know what it is, and to be ready, desiring more and more of Him, and relief from the depression and desire to just sit and ruminate and turn inward (or sleep my life away)

So my goal for this study this summer is to find myself seeking him, even in the hard times, and to not give up on staying in the word. I need the help to focus… So, though I am going solo, I know this community is gonna help me – even if I show up with my comments a bit late!!!

  24. 1174
    Julie says:

Evansville, Indiana – just me. New to the summer series but am really looking forward to it.

Present season of life – Mellow

Goal – To learn and understand more about Ruth’s devotion and loyalty that would make her leave everything for her MOTHER-IN-LAW!

Judges – Similar to our culture today. So many people who call the acceptance of sin “tolerance”. Everyone feels like what they do is OK as long as it doesn’t hurt someone else. But we know that just calling wrong right does not make it right in God’s sight.

Jeremiah – Blessed is the man (woman) who trusts in the Lord and whose hope is in the Lord. When we do what is right in God’s sight we will be a strong fruitful tree and richly blessed.

Looking so forward to studying with you all. Take care!

    Barbara says:

Columbia, IL/St. Louis, MO. Going solo but would love to find a group of gals in my area!

My seasonal word is NUMB. Am going through a holocaust of incredibly deep betrayal, on-going divorce, and complete destruction of my future. Financially insecure and self-employed. I have a GREAT church and God has blown me away with incredible answers to several of my prayers. I vascilate between hope and despair.

My goal is to gain trust and security in God, and God alone.

I am so afraid now to do anything of my own will that I feel like a long-tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs. Afraid to do anything without God’s stamp of approval ’cause I might get nailed. So I’ve got my tail wrapped pretty tight around my body, and don’t dare swish it.

    • 1175.1
      Beth says:

I so understand, Barbara. May God speak so tenderly to you and heal your broken heart and battered soul. He loves you so much.

    • 1175.2
      Julie says:

      Barbara,
You are so blessed with a great church family and seeing God already at work in your life answering prayers. I will pray for you and hope that this study will help you find the security in God that you so desire. Sometimes being numb is a blessing but I hope it won’t be long until you are swishing your tail high and proud! Take care.

    Traci Lewis says:

I’m sorry that this is late, my life has been crazy lately. We have a group of 7 ladies. Most of us live in the area of Toledo, OH, however we have one lady in San Antonia, TX and another in New Hampshire. Since we are so spread out, we are meeting via e-mail and a discussion board. We range in age of early 30s to the early 60s. One lady is single, another is widowed, and the rest of us are married. All but the single lady have children and most have grandchildren. Right now we are all mainly in a point of our life that involves confusion, uneasiness, or sadness. Most of us were connected to a little 6 year old girl who was killed two weeks ago after being struck by a car (she was my niece). This is causing some of the distress in our lives. Many have learned things about themselves that they hope this study will improve on. All of us hope to grow closer to God through this study. In regard to the verses, we all agree that we have tried to do things our own way at one time or another and it doesn’t work. The only way to live your life is by following God. We look forward to this trip.

Give yourselves time to grieve your sweet child! And taking from Jeremiah ask HIM to “Heal me, O Lord, and I will be healed; save me and I will be saved, for you are the one I praise!”v 14. If you truly look to HIM to heal and save, your grief will abate and the peace will come in time. I lost my son 2 1/2 years ago and thru Christ and the promises found in his word have found peace with the knowledge he is perfect and whole and I will see his smiling face again soon! god bless!

Hi Getting a later start since we are heading back home from Atlanta tomorrow morning after spending a week visiting family. Now I know why it is sometimes called “Hotlanta” Holy Cow!! I am doing this study solo. Have done the last two with a small group, but felt I wasn’t up to leading right now. My season right now is one of “questioning”?? I am looking forward to reading about and learning from a woman like Ruth. I can relate to the title, “Love, Loss and Legacy” Hoping to hear a word from God specifically for me. On a side note, the C.D. that Kelly did to go along with the study is awesome! I especially love songs 4, 5, and 8, but they are all great!!

I just finished “A Woman’s Heart Bible Study…Beth, I love you! 🙂 The one word to describe this current season in my life would be: Desparate; Desparate to REALLY know God, His Word and His ways; Desparate for God to reveal Himself to me in greater ways than ever before (wisdom & revelation); Desparate to love with my whole soul, mind and strength;Desparate for God to search my heart and test my mind, for He is my praise.

I am having trouble nailing down one word, as there are 2 that aptly describe where I am at: Upheaval and quiet

With 4 children, my goal this summer is relatively simple….to be in His word each day, to pray each day, and to be still so i can hear His will for me.

    Rachel says:

We are feeling rebellious meeting on Saturdays, but it was what worked out for our group… Our group of 4 were missing our 5th member tonight, but can’t wait to be with us next time. We are meeting in Alpharetta, GA and already know each other through another community group (with our hubbies). We can’t wait to dig into this with one another. We are all moms and learning how to juggle those responsibilities with wanting to continue to grow in our faith and latch onto the Truth God has for us. Our words were “settled, exhausted, evolving and thirsty”.
Thanks for doing this again this summer… it’s been a blessing to me.

    Becky says:

    Dearest Beth,
I actually purchase this book several months ago to do the study myself but I have never been able to get it started.
But wanted to send you this message to tell you about the group of ladies at Stowers Hill Baptist Church that are starting a ladies Bible study group for the first time this coming Thursday night July 1st. Complements of you and all the Siesta. We were blessed by the scholarship program and we will be started “Breaking Free the revised version”. This study will finish up on Sept 9th just before we will be hosting the live simulcast with you and Travis on Sept 18th. We are so excited to be starting this and feel so blessed to be studing God’s Word.
As soon as I can I will post a pic of the group for you to see.

    Be in prayer for us.

Thanks and May God continue to Bless all that you do Siesta mom

My youngest daughter, Bethany, and I will be participating in the summer Bible study. She is newly married and her husband is a youth minister. She is always giving and today she said her goal is to relax and study God’s word and be filled back up. What an honor to study with her and see her be filled up with God so she can continue to give.!!! Sounds like a wonderful goal for her Mom, too.

Just finished week 1 of my homework. Three words: LOVE ING IT! In some ways it is kicking me in the gut, and in other ways, God is using the lessons to specifically deal with issues going on in my life THIS VERY WEEK!! He is definitely using this study as a vehicle to teach me/remind me of some Godly truths.

    Vanessa Hersey says:

Victoria, Texas….going solo this Bible study. If I had to choose one word to describe this season in my life it would be “Change.” Lots of changes are coming- my son is graduating from college in August, I will be teaching at a new school in August, and I will welcome a grandson in October. My goal is to keep my focus on God. I know in my heart of hearts that He knows what is best, and I want to build a deeper relationship with Him.

    Michelle G. says:

Hillsboro, Oregon AND Thomasboro, Illinois; my cousin and I are doing the study together (virtually), so it is just the 2 of us–we grew up together (like “sisters”) but now live so far away from each other–we thought this Bible study would be a great way to reconnect; right now we are communicating via phone but we hope to get Skype set up soon so we can video chat.
My one-word is FRAZZLED and her one-word is ANXIOUS. We are both overwhelmed with life, a little bit! I have a 3 month old— and my cousin is looking for a job as a teacher. We both feel blessed but at the same time we are looking forward to what God has in store for us. We had good conversations about letting His will guide us, knowing He has our best interests at heart.

    Delilah says:

Hi..I am Delilah, and this is my third year of doing the SSBS.. that is not meant to sound bragging, but I so love this blog and the many things I have learned along the way! I so appreciate and love Beth and her family..it is just too much to be able to explain! During this season of my life, life is very chaotic.. My Mom died in November, and I am so finding how much I didn’t know that I thought I did. My goal is to get back on track with God, to grow in His Word, and to love Him more. Judges 21:25 If we were to be able to do as we please..it would be anarchy..the weak would be trampled.. survival of the fittest would apply.
Jeremiah 17:7-14 It sounds like Jerusalem was a lawless society.. It kind of reflects what Judges 21:25 said. Without Law there is anarchy.
My summation is: without rules or laws we would be in big time trouble.

    Northern California, going solo

    My one word: divided

Goal: to be closer to God, that I might surrender fully to Him and let go of control and see the falseness of my idols.

Houston, there are 6 of us, and we’re meeting somewhere in Houston! Yesterday we met at my house. We call ourselves “the peeps.” We’ve been friends for 15 years and our lives have taken different paths, but when we’re together, seems like we’ve never been apart. We can rely on one another for anything! For the most part, we’re in the study to stay focused on Christ; to quench our thirst for Him, and for social reasons. (we love gettin together!)

Melissa, TX, 20 of us met at First Baptist in Melissa. We had such a great time sharing our stories and having a meal together. Our group is as diverse in age as it is in seasons. Many women are simply in a season of peace or calm and a few are just flat out in love with God and their lives. Another large group expressed the need for some peace and calm while they struggle to handle life’s current storm of finances, busy schedules or personal matters. I love that the overwhelming theme of the night was that our group simply wants to take time to be in the Word and grow near to God. I can’t wait to me with my sista’s next time. God is so good!

Going solo in Charleston, SC. Have two friends – one in Savannah (soon) and one in Marietta, Ga. that I will be meeting with every couple of weeks hopefully (Road Trips!!!)

My word for this season of life is renewal. Lots of changes lately (empty nester, moved) and looking forward to a renewed attitude and approach to the future. I have felt so distant from God and we both know He is not the one that moved 🙂

I am flying solo for this study from Upstate NY. As I was thinking about 1 word to describe my season in life, many came to mind, but I suppose “overwhelmed” may describe it best. I was introduced to Beth Moore studies when we lived in MS 11 years ago (Breaking Free). It opened my eyes to how “alive” a relationship with God could be. Having moved to several states since and not being able to find the right fit as far as a church home goes, I was very happy to find “Siestaville!” I’m looking forward to the journey.

I learned of this study when checking the website for the St Louis, MO 6/25-6/26 event. While attending that fabulous event, I committed to join this study solo.
I am looking forward to this new style of bible study in a new community of women.
As I continue to enrich my faith and understanding, I prepare to launch on this new study with great anticipation of the wonderful things that will unfold from God’s plan.
I am a wife of 29 years with one college graduate child and one to graduate in December.
Blessings to the Siesta Summer Bible Study community!

We are meeting on Sunday mornings, for our Sunday school class. There are currently 22 of us meeting. We are a very mixed group of women, age-wise, marital status, children etc…
Some of the words that were used (consistently) to describe our season of life were; confused, uncertain, frustrated and busy.
Our reasons for being in summer Bible study were varied also, but consisted of- accountability, love the book of Ruth, need focus and fellowship.

We will be meeting weekly, and I really sense an excitement with all the ladies!

Lucy, I’m so glad you’re joining in. I pray that God gives you a sense of community here while He works to bring you friends there in London. They’re there! Just keep praying them up and finding people to show kindness to.

    Elaina says:

Tacoma; 8 women; my house; we have a great group of women that met together on Friday. We are momma’s, grandma’s, aunts and our ages range from early 20’s to 80’s, which is a nice mix of us. Each of us discussed our life season and our responses were:

    1. Courtney -Contentment
    2. Elaina- Growing
    3. Tracie -Frazzled
    4. Mary – Steadfast
    5. Linda- Enjoyment
    6. Maria – Transition
    7. Libby – Healing
    8. Libby’s grandma -Peace

We also discussed that there is a balance of having room to be creative within God’s will, but at the same time we have to put Jesus first in our lives rather than holding onto what our flesh want us to do, which ultimately will end up bearing negative consequences instead of blessings (fruitfulness) in our personal/family life.

Our goals were similar in that we want to get closer to God, deepen our relationship with Jesus, fellowship with other Christian women to depend on and deepen our faith in the Lord/God’s Word.

We had a wonderful time getting to know each other and sharing. We know that God’s hand was at work for each of these ladies for being at this bible study. Everyone is excited and looking forward to the next one. We feel so blessed to have this group this summer. Thank you for this summer Siesta Bible Study. Blessings to you all ladies!
