Siesta Summer Bible Study 3 Launch

Hey, Siestas! It’s time for summer Bible study! For the sake of rich fellowship and vital accountability, we hope as many of you as possible are meeting with small groups and on every other Tuesday or as close to Tuesdays as possible. You are absolutely welcome to join us solo but try to stay as involved as possible in the discussions so that you’ll feel plugged in. This is what you’ll do every other Tuesday:

1. Watch the video so you’ll have your instructions for your gathering or for your solo experience. I will always put the bare bones of the instructions in writing on the post just in case there is a video malfunction.

2. (You will find these instructions reiterated in this post because it’s fundamental to the experience.) If you are in a small group, designate one person who will write a comment to this post briefly telling us about your group and your discussion. It can be a different person each week or the same. START THE COMMENT WITH THE CITY, THE NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS AND LOCATION THEN DESCRIBE YOUR GROUP AND ADD SOMETHING ABOUT YOUR DISCUSSION. For instance, I am meeting with my Monday staff members so my comment will begin with:

Houston, Texas; 8 of us; Meeting at Living Proof Ministries. Our group is primarily made up of…The main part of our discussion was about…(And so forth).

3. If you are going solo, your comment will become the way you complete the assignments. In other words, you’ll see that I ask you to describe this season of your life in one word. In your comment, tell us what that one word would be.

Make the length of it one good, descriptive paragraph. Try not to write too much or readers will tend to skip over it.

This clip is to give instructions for your first gathering – the one you are hopefully having today or in next 24 hours. You can watch this together or your leader can watch it and pass on your instructions.

Summer Bible Study – Week 1 from LPV on Vimeo.

I so hope that makes sense! Now, here are the written instructions for your gathering just in case you can’t get the video to work. Welcome aboard! May God take us on a journey that we’ll treasure for many years. Let’s find the Ruth in us, Siestas!

Today in your small group, here’s what I am asking you to do:

1. If you don’t know each other, spend a few minutes finding out some basic biographical information about one another.  (Single, married, still in school, or in a career. Children, no children. The regular stuff. Keep in mind that everybody fits in Bible study. You don’t need to all be alike. In fact, the more alike you all are, the less you may sharpen one another.)

2. Each of you in your small group characterize your life in this present season in ONE WORD.  Have the leader record these.

3. Each of you in your small group share one specific goal you have this summer for being in Bible study. Have the leader record these, too.

4. Look at the very last verse of the Book of Judges (Judges 21:25) because of its placement just prior to the book we’ll study together this summer. Discuss several specific reasons why doing what each of us sees fit at any given time could be dangerous. After several minutes of discussion, read Jeremiah 17:7-14 and talk about how this segment relates or contrasts to Judges 21:25.

Leader: this is very important. You get back on within 24 hours of meeting and write a brief summation of your group time as a comment to this post. Tell us how many came, your city, and something about your group or your group discussion.

*UPDATE*
Here’s a link to the first chapter of Ruth in case you don’t have your workbook yet.

Hi everyone! I’m starting the study solo. I’m a mom to two little ones (3 and 1), and I just started working 3 days a week. A word to describe this season of my life is hopeful. I’m not happy about my work situation because I really want to be home with the kids, but I’m hopeful about how the Lord is working in our situation, and I’m hopeful about how me working can positively impact my family (although sometimes a better word would be “stressful”, and I have to remind myself about the hopeful part!). My goal this summer is to stay in the scripture and to use my “weapons” of scripture and prayer to start living as a Christian, rather than as a (fill in the blank) who is also a Christian.

In response to the discussion questions:
I think the dangers in everyone doing as he sees fit relate to our sinful and self-centered nature. The first part of the Judges verse says “Israel had no king” – so no one who laid out a code of acceptable behavior. Without rules, each person is responsible for evaluating behaviors individually, and most likely, our self-centered nature will take over and we’ll act (and judge actions) in a way that benefits ourselves. The result of that is that our interests will conflict with someone else’s and someone will get hurt (emotionally or physically). Jeremiah describes Israel’s true king, the Lord, who is always faithful and who gives them both a code for how to act and the motivation to do so. The Jeremiah verses acknowledge our sinful nature, but they reveal the consequences for giving in to it, and the benefits to following the Lord instead. While acting in our own interest benefits us in the short run, it hurts us in the (really) long run.

Our group of 8 ladies met last night at our church in Houston. What a blessing!
We are an interesting mix of single and married; grandmas, moms (kids of all ages), and no kids; some working (full and part time), some retired, some stay at home moms, one working full time and going to school part time.
We are unsettled, needing direction, at peace, searching, letting go, and accepting.
We are here for Bible study because we need clarity, help, reconnection, discipline, get fed, knowledge, find purpose, and desire to dig deep into God’s word.
We are excited to see how God is going to use this our group. Thanks for this opportunity!

Edgewater, FL; 17 of us; Our group is so diverse, the youngest is 32 and the oldest is 65! We actually had to split into 3 smaller groups (one in the living room, one in a bedroom and one in the kitchen!) It was totally amazing how the Lord completely orchestrated that! We all walked away realizing this summer study was completely a devine intervention! Words like these described our ladies: stressed, change, overwhelmed, lazy, tired, struggling, learning, searching, chaotic, trusting, exodus, there were a few positives, but even those were just realizations that the difficult time they are going through is going to turn out ok! Words like, blessed, love, growing, encouraged! We talked about that everything boils down to trust. Someone asked: How do we know that what we “see fit” (or what we decided) is God’s will and not ours? We talked a lot about that! Being very careful to make our decisions with the guide of the Word, wise councel and feeling a sence of peace! Ultimately, however, is boils down to trust! Knowing that God writes the final chapter in each of our lives and as long as we are truly seeking Him and His direction, even if we make a choice that wasn’t His perfect will, we will redeem us by His grace and work it out! (We may learn from a consequence or two, but that is ok!) Can’t wait until we meet up again!

I am going solo for the study. “DROWNING” is the best word I can use to describe myself during this present season of my life. I have been and continue to face many overwhelming challenges…. Wave after wave comes pounding in and over me. Praise God, He is faithful and I know He is facing these things with me!

I am very excited about the study. I really enjoy Kelly Minter and am very happy about this second study in the “Living Room” series.

I hope to get in the habit of daily time with God (strengthening my spiritual core), be sustained in this time of change and uncertainty, come to know my Father better.

I am really excited about this study! Thank you, Beth!

    One word description-Examining
Goal-To stay in the Word this summer-So excited for this study!
After I read Judges, I was reminded that I had recently told my students that we have rules in school that are to be followed, otherwise we’d be living in chaos and would it be fun to be in a school, where every child got to do what they wanted? They said, “No!” with some great examples of why. Doing what we want instead of what God wants is indicative of a life that hasn’t been changed. I want my confidence in Him always. HE IS the ONE I praise!
Praying for an amazing summer in the Word!

Siestaville for us is in Belmont, OH. There are six of us in our group, but only four for our first meeting. Our present seasons of life range from new beginnings to crossroads. We are a group of ladies who have done numerous Beth Moore studies and goals for the summer are fellowship and being active in the word. This morning I did the first day of homework and can’t wait till our next meeting. We are planning on meeting weekly and I know that even without the discussion questions, we will have plenty to talk about.

  15. 465

Clanton, Alabama; 6 in our group (we will add one more next week); held in my home; made up young women ages 25-35 who have a collective desire to start a passionate women’s ministry; First of all, we all wanted to say “Thank You so much for this!” We could have done it on our own, but we probably wouldn’t have. Our discussion was rich and full of a true desire to draw closer to God and seek His will for our families and our church. We talked at length about the current sense of “lawlessness” in our world and in contrast how God gives us that inner sense of law and right. And we talked about Ruth….how she must have felt, if we would have made the same decisions, the implications of her decisions and therefore the implications of many of our decisions. We spent a great deal of time discussing how we hope this Bible Study will be a place to spark a heartfelt women’s ministry. We are so excited to see what is in store over the next few weeks.

10 of us…it was supposed to be a “back porch” bible study…but it was 98 degrees with good ole NC humidity so we stuck to the living room!
    2. We had several different words ranging from Searching to Transitioning to Adventure.
    3. Common theme was “to focus on Bible Study during the summer when it is so easy to avoid it” “need for accountability” and just plain “stay in the Word”!
Discussed the scriptures referenced and of course had snacks…hahaha
Looking forward to the rest of it!!!

    Tara McMurphy says:

I am brand new to “Siestaville.” I came across this blog from Kelly’s Korner which led me to Baby Bangs, and then to here. So here I am! This is my first online Bible study, so I am doing this solo. I am meeting early in the morning as part of my daily time with God. I am married (23 years) with 2 children, a junior in high school and a junior in college. We have just recently moved our family from Florida to Springfield, MO. This season of my life would be “expecting.” God is teaching me to have Great Expectations of Him. He will always meet me at the level of my expectation and my goal is to be willing to let Him use me in any way He can to fulfill those expectations.

      Tara,
I live in Springfield and I am also doing the study solo. We are doing VBS this week so I haven’t had a chance to really get started. I have been married for 24 years and have a daughter that will be a high school junior. Let’s try to get together.
I did see this other group of three. Maybe we could find them.

    Shannon says:

    Hi-
Right now I’am the only one doing the study. I have invited (2) other women my age to do it with me (30’s). They are supposed to be getting the book this week. Right now my mood is sad b/c I was supposed to do this study in a group with a few other women but the leader decided she wanted to keep the group “small” and I had invited these two other women to do the study and she did not want them to come? I don’t get it-it’s a bible study, who are we to decide who comes and who doesn’t. So I think I’m just going to go ahead with these two other women and pray for a wonderful study! 🙁 Although I’m sad this has happened and it’s shed a light on this other woman that I’m not sure I can get over right now?

      Sharron,
I know that you are hurting and I am sorry!I am keeping you in prayer! We are human and full of flaws, maybe this happened because God wants you to host this study in your home with a group of ladies, hang in there and remember to not allow bitterness or resentment to give the devil a stronghold. he is a snicky one! Going solo in Effingham, IL. Single/divorced with 2 grown sons, 2 daughters-in-law, 2 grandsons with 2 more on the way. How great is our God! He is sooo faithful. After living in Houston, TX for 5 years, He moved me back here to be closer to them all and as Beth says, “I’m just beside myself”. 🙂

One word to describe my life right now: Prayerful. Oh how I want to live in a manner worthy of the calling with which I have been called. That my family would know the love of Christ and see Him in me.

This is my first on-line summer Bible study and I’m excited about it as I LOVE to study the Word of God.

Warrenton, VA – 8 of us last night (missing 3-4). We have a regular Bible Study throughout the year that most of us attend, but since we’re meeting at night, we were able to have a few more working friends join us. We’re meeting at our church office on Tuesday nights. We talked a lot about what it looks like to follow our own way – being guided by our emotions and how that just doesn’t work! We were able to share a lot with each other our goals and our prayer requests. I think it’s going to be a great study and a special time for all of us. Btw, Kelly Minter and I went to high school together and I know her family very well! Can’t wait to do her study!

Mapleville, Rhode Island, we are meeting at my home. There will be 9 of us all together but only 7 attended last evening. We are all women who are between the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s range. Our “life” words in this present season were as follows: revealing, apprehensive, content, tested, changing, prayerful, and our last woman had to be different and have two words, overwhelmed/blessed, some people just have to be more special!LOL But we love her anyway. Our goals for the study were collectively, to learn, fellowship and support. When we read Judges 21:25 it just struck us all that this is how the “world” is today. Just do what you want to do kind of attitude, look at where this has gotten us!

Can’t wait to see what this study has in store for us. We are so excited. This is the first Bible Study for one of our friends. I just know God has something special in store for her.

    • 479.1
      Rebekah says:

Lori, your woman that had two words overwhelmed/blessed makes me think of one of ours who started out with blessed but 5 minutes later she decided she was burdened. We gave her a hard time and I told her I was going to start calling her B&B. 🙂

Also, we too have a few girls that have never done a Bible study before and are so beyond excited 🙂 I know God is going to show Himself in crazy big ways 🙂

      • Lori, Love2Praise says:

Rebekah, We just love our Joyce, who was the woman with two words. Woman with two words, sounds sort of like an given Indian name, doesn’t it. Most men would be happy to know a woman with just 2 words!! Ah but I digress. She has a father who is very ill and needs lots of care and she also just had her first granchild, a beautiful girl, whom she helps care for. Hence the two words.

Isn’t it awesome how God puts us all together, not only in our own homes within the Bible study but throught this Siesta Sisterhood! I am happy to meet you and know that God will bless us throughout this study.

        • Lori, Love2Praise says:

Oops, wanted to add that we had the Fresh Tomato Pasta. It was truly yummy!! We also had garlic bread, chicken salad sanwiches, scrumptious blueberry cake and rasberry/oatmeal bars. Wonderful food for the belly and the Word was food for the soul!

Dothan, AL, solo, my office during my lunch hour

The one word to characterize this season in my life would be “challenging”. Somehow I thought when I got to be 60 life would be smooth and uneventful. Wrong! Spiritually I have been in a ditch for some time, rebellious and questioning my faith-at 60 for heaven’s sake!! Instead of retirement I am in a challenging and demanding job,my elderly parent”s health is quickly declining and my only surviving child is many, many miles away with my first born grandchild. I come to this Bible study as I am journeying back home, back to beautiful fellowship with my Lord, back from “doing what I saw fit in my own eyes”. It is a wonderful refreshing time and I know God led me to this study for that reason. Like Naomi I find myself going home and I am anxious for the journey. I am packed, map in hand, fueled up and ready to travel.

Missouri City/Sugar Land Texas; 11 women meeting together in our home. We range in age and all come from different walks of life but our purpose and goal for this study was much the same in wanting to know God more, attempting to seek Him and have a great acknowledgment of his Word, a longing for focus and consistency. We had our first meeting yesterday evening. We spent a good portion of our time getting to know each other. The one word to best characterize our seasons were: Blah, transition, stuck, uncertainty, longing, coping, lost, connecting, waiting. We are all new to the blogging world but are all very excited to be connecting to so many other women around our great nation. Looking forward to digging into this study with all my siestas!

I have done the summer studies solo for the last 2 years and decided to ask others from my small town to join me. Our seasons range from Wilderness to Chaos to Full. All of us are desiring a closer fellowship with Jesus and meaningful fellowship with other ladies. I am so excited to see what God will do!

    Leigh Ann says:

Our group of four is in Nashville, and we are all wives/moms in our 30’s/40’s. Our intro meeting was sweet, and the words we used to describe our present seasons of life were: “flux,” “desert,” and “hungry.” (And since we were full of yummy Chicken Enchiladas, these words refer to spiritual states — just clarifying!)
We all agreed our families/friends benefit from our starting the day in prayer and quiet time, so one of our common missions is to study in the morning along with our devotion time.
Our overall goals were similar in that we all wanted a reason to be in the Word every day with no excuses. The Judges verse was well-received by this group because we are all busy women and can all find valid reasons we can’t spend daily time with the Lord in the study of His word. But we are praying that through this fun way of disciplining ourselves, we will feel an even deeper connection with God.
We all LOVED the idea of the letter and can’t wait to see how our letters will be different in six weeks!

Words to describe the season of life we’re in:
stirring (em), tired (Kris), trusting (Shan), joyful (Lynn).

    Our goals include:
Doing first Bible study and doing it well.
Becoming familiar with a book of the Bible.
    Spending time with the girls.
Finding out why the book of Ruth is in the Bible and why its important to the Lord and to us.
Getting to know Jesus (my Boaz) in a sweeter way. Finding my earthly Boaz.

    We’ll be praying for y’all.
    To God be the Glory.

    Elizabeth says:

My name is Elizabeth, I live in Savannah, GA and I am doing this study alone ( I have a mentor I planned to do it with, but she is away part of the summer for family vacation and stuff). I am 29, married, 3 kids – 2 sons (step-sons that I adopted) who are 9 and 10, and 1 daughter who is 18 months- work FT outside of the home. The one word that describes my life right now is lonely. I am hoping through this bible study to get my relationship with God back where it use to be years ago and start healing from the heart that is lingering from miscarrying twins back in April and family absence in general from both my family and my in-laws. I think that the passage in Jeremiah shows what doing what each of us wants leads to- being put to shame and proved a fool. I loved verse 14 though “Heal me, O Lord, and I will be healed; save me and I will be saved, for you are the one I praise.” Can’t wait to see when this summer leads all of us!

    Gina says:

Hi! This is our first Siesta Summer Bible Study and we are all excited! There are 8 of us in the Jackon, MS metro area, late 40s to early/mid 50s, 4 married, 3 single, 1widowed. I have known everyone for at least 20 years but my two sets of “chosen family” have never really had an opportunity to get to know each other, so very excited about having all my favorite ladies in this group! And we are all excited about getting to know “Ruth” and see what she brings to our lives! I think an overwhelming reason we all wanted to work through this study together was to have a structured plan for ‘real’ Bible study-the kind that makes you dig deep and changes your life-not something rote that you can check off the ‘to do’ list everyday. Praying that we have all made a friend of Ruth and have a deeper relationship with Jesus at the end of this study!

    Judy says:

Lake Charles, LA:5 of us met at my house. Our group is made up of ladies from age 27-60+. We attend 3 different churches. Two of us are teachers, one is a retired teacher,a sales rep for a local TV station, and (my daughter) manager at a local hair salon.

The ONE WORD that characterized our seasons in life was: changes, joyful, expectancy, surprise, and mawmaw.

We spent our time talking about our need to:
1.have God reveal what’s next in our lives
    2.have adult conversations and interactions
3.learn more about Ruth and how her story relates to us
4.listen to and remember what God is teaching us

We had a wonderful time visiting and sharing for over 2 hours. I can’t wait until next week to share what God has revealed to us through our homework.

Colorado Springs, CO, just me, in my favorite chair.

    1) Isolated

    2) Get wisdom, renewed passion and restored joy

    3) Without seeking the Lord’s counsel, it seems you’re setting yourself up to be out from under His protection. He sees whats coming, He knows what’s best. He alone can guide us with the wisdom we need. We just have to be willing to be patient to wait to hear from Him in His timing. It’s not easy. I’m experiencing a wait like this right now and it’s excruciating.

4)Trusting in the Lord brings life. I love that it says there’s no fear. I think when we do things without seeking the Lord fear and anxiety consume us. I also love the reminder taht our hearts our deceitful–how true, how true. Why we would ever follow our fickle hearts is beyond me and yet I fall into the trap all the time. What a beautiful passage of reminding us that the Lord rewards us when we put our trust in Him. Please, Lord help me to do that today.

I just have to say WOW.

I just finished Day 1 of the study. The first thing I noticed is Kelly’s writing style. The way she weaves her words together immediately drew me in and I find myself a sudden fan.

The back story people? Talk about a lesson in itself.

I can’t do this alone; I’m dying to interact with other women on this. Chang my solo status! I’m grabbing a couple of girls STAT!

    RSB says:

Five of our six girls were able to meet last night in Albany, Georgia. We are all married with young children–so the most common word to describe our lives right now was chaotic. Several of us participated together in the 1st Siesta Summer Bible study and enjoyed Kelly’s book so much. We are looking forward to learning more about Ruth, spending time with God, and spending time together this summer.

High Point, NC; 5 of us; Brenda’s home
Our group is made up of married ladies, some with children and some without, in our thirties and forties. We all attend The Summit Church in Kernersville. Our discussion last night was mainly about the decisions in our lives that we have to make right now based on the season that God has placed us. The overall theme of our discussion was our desire to seek God’s wisdom so that we make decisions that honor and glorify Him.
