Siesta Summer Bible Study 3 Launch

Hey, Siestas! It’s time for summer Bible study! For the sake of rich fellowship and vital accountability, we hope as many of you as possible are meeting with small groups and on every other Tuesday or as close to Tuesdays as possible. You are absolutely welcome to join us solo but try to stay as involved as possible in the discussions so that you’ll feel plugged in. This is what you’ll do every other Tuesday:

1. Watch the video so you’ll have your instructions for your gathering or for your solo experience. I will always put the bare bones of the instructions in writing on the post just in case there is a video malfunction.

2. (You will find these instructions reiterated in this post because it’s fundamental to the experience.) If you are in a small group, designate one person who will write a comment to this post briefly telling us about your group and your discussion. It can be a different person each week or the same. START THE COMMENT WITH THE CITY, THE NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS AND LOCATION THEN DESCRIBE YOUR GROUP AND ADD SOMETHING ABOUT YOUR DISCUSSION. For instance, I am meeting with my Monday staff members so my comment will begin with:

Houston, Texas; 8 of us; Meeting at Living Proof Ministries. Our group is primarily made up of…The main part of our discussion was about…(And so forth).

3. If you are going solo, your comment will become the way you complete the assignments. In other words, you’ll see that I ask you to describe this season of your life in one word. In your comment, tell us what that one word would be.

Make the length of it one good, descriptive paragraph. Try not to write too much or readers will tend to skip over it.

This clip is to give instructions for your first gathering – the one you are hopefully having today or in next 24 hours. You can watch this together or your leader can watch it and pass on your instructions.

Summer Bible Study – Week 1 from LPV on Vimeo.

I so hope that makes sense! Now, here are the written instructions for your gathering just in case you can’t get the video to work. Welcome aboard! May God take us on a journey that we’ll treasure for many years. Let’s find the Ruth in us, Siestas!

Today in your small group, here’s what I am asking you to do:

1. If you don’t know each other, spend a few minutes finding out some basic biographical information about one another.  (Single, married, still in school, or in a career. Children, no children. The regular stuff. Keep in mind that everybody fits in Bible study. You don’t need to all be alike. In fact, the more alike you all are, the less you may sharpen one another.)

2. Each of you in your small group characterize your life in this present season in ONE WORD.  Have the leader record these.

3. Each of you in your small group share one specific goal you have this summer for being in Bible study. Have the leader record these, too.

4. Look at the very last verse of the Book of Judges (Judges 21:25) because of its placement just prior to the book we’ll study together this summer. Discuss several specific reasons why doing what each of us sees fit at any given time could be dangerous. After several minutes of discussion, read Jeremiah 17:7-14 and talk about how this segment relates or contrasts to Judges 21:25.

Leader: this is very important. You get back on within 24 hours of meeting and write a brief summation of your group time as a comment to this post. Tell us how many came, your city, and something about your group or your group discussion.

*UPDATE*
Here’s a link to the first chapter of Ruth in case you don’t have your workbook yet.

Can’t wait to start this study with all of you ladies. We are starting on July 5th @ 8:00 pm b/c we have some friends who are in Asia on a missions trip and we didn’t want to start without them. We are a mix of mommas, wives, friends, college students, etc…. I am so excited to see what we learn together & individually!
One word to describe my life right now…BUSY…I am 33 yrs old with 3 sweet kiddos (ages 3, 7, & 9) home for summer, and an awesome hubby! We are busy with suumer vacations to see grandparents, VBS decorating, and just finished up with a bridal shower for one of my sweet college girls last night! I cannot wait to see how the LORD brings us all together through HIS WORD!

    Brooke S. says:

I got around to reading the verses in our homework from last night and wanted to share what I thought…Since I didn’t in my roll call intro..Obviously like most everyone else, I see in the passage and in our society how doing as you wish without the guidance of the Lord is a very bad idea and leads to disaster. However, two verses really spoke to me in a different way to the assignment so I thought I’d share them:

Jeremiah 17:10 “I the Lord search the heart and examine the mind, to reward a man according to his conduct, according to what his deeds deserve.” -I feel like even though we are saved by Grace and not by works, I feel like as Christians we should have a desire to do good works to show the love of the Lord. It is my desire that when God examines my heart and mind, that He will find good thoughts towards others and good deeds to be done.

Jeremiah 17:14 “Heal me, O Lord, and I will be healed; save me and I will be saved, for you are the one I praise.” -This is my prayer for myself and all the women in this bible study as we go through this summer together with God!

Even though I am new to all of this and new to Siestaville, I feel like I’m a part of something and that helps me be accountable for my walk with God! Thank you!

I am in San Antonio, TX. I am doing this solo–since it’s summer and easier on my schedule…for now, working on maybe getting my mom involved with me!!! 😉
I am married 12 yrs. and a sahm of 3. I usually do a ladies bible study with my church during the school year.
My season right now is debate.
My goal in this study is to learn more about Ruth and see where God is leading me in my job decision right now.

    Augusta, Georgia
We are a diverse group of women ranging in age from to 25 to 60s. There are 14 of us meeting at our church on Wednesday nights. Our one word season descriptions ranged from uncertain, busy, fulfilled, anxious to peaceful.
We are all excited to dig into God’s word together and are expecting Him to show up big in our lives this summer!

    Jennifer says:

Solo. West Linn, Oregon. 34. Mom of a precious 3 year-old princess. Full-time nurse. Currently going through a nasty divorce. One word: devastated. Over the past 6 months my life has crumbled into a million pieces and the Lord has been so faithful to carry me. I so need healing and wholeness and hope right now!

      Laura says:

      Jennifer,
Tears are clouding my eyes. I know your pain, and devastation. God will heal and make you whole. He is your strength – Isaiah 41:10. It was and still is my lifeline. Keep your face on Jesus and know that you are so loved – a jewel in His eyes. God will bring you through refined. You may have heard all this before, but at times needs to be said again and again. I am glad you are doing the bible study. Bible studies and fellowship with other christians helped me through my dark days. May God Bless You and Keep You :)I am praying for you.

    Donna says:

St. Louis, Missouri we are 7 strong family members doing our first ever Bible study together. We range in age from 18 to 90 – Praise the Lord. Our discussion tonight centered mainly around transitions. That seemed to be the word the best describes all of us at this time. Transitions from giving up your home to live with another , beginning college, finding new churches, beginning to home school, and beginning a marrage. We are looking forward to seeing how the Lord is going to bless us all with this time in his word.

  9. 759
    Beth says:

San Francisco, CA; I am doing the study solo, but if anyone from San Francisco is hiding in the comments I would love to connect! I am single and 29. My word is conflicted.

    Debbie says:

Loretto Ky – going solo but have a couple of empty chairs if friends decide to come – My one word comment – transition.

  12. 762

Going Solo in Gadsden, Alabama, the one word that would describe my life right now is “happiness.” I had such a rough winter and early spring, broke free from the stronghold of “fear” and as a result, I’m an unemployed attorney who is having the best summer of her life, enjoying my kids and summer for the first time since they’ve been born. We are making memories I will always cherish. I’m hoping to continue to grow through this summer’s Bible study and anticipating a word on what move to make next. As far as question 4 goes, the problem I run into when I “do as I see fit” is that I end up doing more harm to myself and to others. When only if I would have consulted with God things would be so much better off.

  13. 763
    Sally says:

Solo – from Missouri. 53-year-old SAHM but now an empty nester with two beautiful grandchildren. Can’t wait to dig into this study. God has been so faithful to bless each study I have participated in – He is so good!

  14. 764
    Jami Holland says:

My name is Jami…and I’m going solo in Boone, North Carolina (30 min from eastern Tennessee).

One word to describe my season of life would be: unhindered. I am a recent college graduate, no job, no idea where I’ll be after July 31. But I’m at a place in my life where I’m freely giving the Lord all my mess, all my plans, all my ideas of what my life should look like…trying to become unhindered. My goal for this summer is simply to get to know the Lord more and fall deeper in love with Him, and take action in my life for Him, in service and ministry around me.

  15. 765
    Pam says:

Wow–over 1,000 comments already-amazing!! I am in Indiana, 43 years old, married with a handsome 22 year-old grown son. This will be my first bible study and will be doing this solo. I am waiting for my book to come in the mail-hopefully I can follow along with all of you. One word to describe my season in life right now–uncertain. I did read the scriptues assigned so far… the first thing that came to me was take me back. Take me back Lord to a time that I trusted only you to lead and guide my footsteps. How I need His clear direction in my life right now.

  16. 766
    Erica says:

Phoenix, Az/Grass Valley, Ca.- There are 5 participants in our group. You are probably wondering why we have two locations. We are conducting our study over email with each other! So cool. There are 3 of us in Phx and 2 in Cali. Here are the words that summarize where each of us are right now. Blessed, seeking, motivated, ecstatic, and growing. Wow! Can it get any better than that? We will have to see!

  17. 767
    Laura says:

Solo Laura – married, mother of 3 (2 grown – one getting way too close) 🙂 New Teacher (scarey in these finicial times)

    Season of my life: Struggling

Goal: To take better care of myself spiritually, so that the other struggles of my life won’t be so debilitating.

Scripture thoughts: It would be easy to pick up and move when life gets difficult, but from my experience trying to move before God says to just makes things so much worse.

4 in our group (with a possible 5th person joining next meeting!) ages 24-49. We have two brand new Siestas, my sister did last year’s study and this is my 3rd Siesta summer study. :o)
Our group is my mom (Robyn), my sister (Holly), my sister’s friend (Amanda) and me!
We met last night at my house and made those yummy enchiladas! We’ll be making a dinner each time. So exciting and really provides a comfortable atmosphere for sharing God’s word!

Our words: chaotic, busy x2 and overwhelmed.
    Our goals:
Robyn- Relate Ruth’s life to her own life today and consistently apply the truth she “gleans” from this study.
Holly- Get into God’s Word and be more consistent in Bible study.
Amanda- Learn more about God’s Word and be able to share what she’s learned with youth group at church!
Me- To follow Ruth’s example and to trust God in everything and to be obedient when He speaks to me. Consistency in study while raising little ones too!

We had an awesome time last night and we’re so looking forward to the next meeting! If anyone wants to join us, please email me [email protected] Love you ladies!

  19. 769
    Lauren says:

Arlington, TX; 8 of us; meeting at my house. Our group is made up an assortment of ages from teens to a grandmother. The main part of our discussion was about how doing it on our own doesn’t work. We need to trust in the Lord, apply His Word to our life, and live it out.

Praise the Lord for Bible study and fellowship with other believers! What a joy to learn about Him!

  20. 770
    Jen H. says:

    *Solo
    *Littleton, CO
*Married and a SAHM to 2 young girls
*”Blessed” describes my season right now. I feel so blessed right now, yet I yearn to draw closer to Him and relinquish my self to Him EVERY SINGLE DAY!!!!

  21. 771
    Michelle says:

    1. I am going solo for this study…I have not had a chance to go through all the comments, but if anyone living in Columbus, OH has a group going I will be interested in joining you!
    Bio: Single; late 30s.

    2. Anticipation.

    3. A few years ago God spoke to me through the book of Ruth about destiny…and concerning my destiny and future in Him. As I prepare to graduate from seminary at the end of this summer, I am very excited to hear what God will say during this season as I wait upon Him for direction. I am excited for all of us!

    4. When I think about what it means to live as one sees fit, I think of one word: chaos. Living as one sees fit is not freedom. We cannot trust ourselves, we can only trust God. Our hearts can deceive us, so it is important to remain in God’s word and discern His voice.

  22. 772
    Misty says:

Going solo in Midland, TX. I am a 34 years old; married for 12 years; mom of three girls (7,6, and 3). One word for this season would be overwhelmed. I am easily distracted by things that don’t really matter. My “goal” or I guess reason for doing this study, as with any Bible study, is because of Philippians 3:10 – My determined purpose is that I may know Him…..

  23. 773

    Whitney says:

    Hey Siestas!

I’m 29 and will be doing the Bible Study Solo from Decatur, Alabama anybody else out there from Decatur?

The season of my life is: NEWNESS. I just moved up here (5 hours north of everyone I know and love) about three months ago- most people don’t understand when I say this- but after I was randomly offered a job up here that I didn’t apply for, I felt like the Lord was asking me to move as an act of obediance. I have absolutely no idea why, but I am absolutely certain I am exactly where he wants me. I haven’t met a lot of people here yet, but I feel so much more peace than I ever have before. My goal for this summer Bible Study is that I would grow closer to the Lord and learn how to better draw on his spirit for strength.

      Hey Whitney,

I am Lisa and go to Central Park Baptist Church here in Decatur. There are four of us doing this study. We would absolutely LOVE to have you join our group!!! Just out of curiosity – you are 5 hour north of everyone you love. You wouldn’t have come from Baldwin County, AL would you. My husband’s family is from Bay Minette/Loxley. Are you familiar with that area. Hope to hear from you!!! Lisa Newberry

    Deb says:

Doing this study alone, from Texas. I tried to participate last night by commenting, but my answers were all so depressing that I couldn’t do it. The word for my life right now is ‘horrific’. I taught SS and led women’s Bible studies for more than 30 years, but 2 years ago some unspeakable circumstances came into my life that have isolated me and I’ve not even been able to attend church since then. Two days ago I was “in the throws” of leaving my marriage. Lste last night I did the first lesson of this Ruth study. How did it end? With Galatians 6:9 “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” I could quote this verse from memory, but last night it lept off the page in BOLD, ALL-CAPS,UNDERLINED ITALICS right into my life. HOW DOES GOD DO THAT?? How does He orchestrate having Kelly Minter write those words in a Bible study (that I would never have picked out to do on my own), have Beth choose it for this summer’s study- for thousands of women to do, and have THAT lesson on THAT day speak the very words of instruction, direction and promise that I needed to hear on that very day??? God, You are so real and so big and I love You with every fiber of my being.

    • 776.1

Deb….may God bless you for your raw honesty! I am so sorry for whatever situation came your way 2 years ago that caused such agony! I pray that this Bible study will give you a new freedom. A freedom to again go to the place where believers gather to worship.
      May God bless you MORE!

I agree it’s amazing how PERFECT God’s timing is! I also have been needing to hear some of this as my oldest girls are 11 & 12 and there are times that I want to give up even discipline as it doesn’t seem to work.
Was in a similar church situation a few years ago and will be praying for you to see the light at the end of the tunnel for your situation.

Deb – I feel like you write my story … the devastation is too much to face God … but he is that good and he wants us back so bad that he is willing to go to great lengths to seek and find you. May you bask in that warmth today!

    Paula says:

Cincinnati, Ohio– solo –my usual small group finished the Esther study in May and has taken a break for the summer. I have felt at a loss the past 3 summers during our break so I can identify with Beth’s description in the video of “living in the ditch” without staying consistently in the Word.
This is my first time to participate in the Siestas-I have been reading the blog for a while.
One word for my current season is unsettled–I want to be at peace with whatever God has planned for me.
My goal is to grow more in spiritual discipline–making more time for the Lord who always has time for me.
    Without God–life becomes chaotic.

  28. 778
    Christine says:

Ashburn, Virginia; 10 of us; Meeting in our homes.
We are mostly late 20s and early 30s who attend four different churches in the area. Many of us attend Reston Bible where Kelly’s dad is the pastor. We are all married and most have children or children on the way!
A main theme of our words to describe this season of our lives was unknown or waiting as many of us are going through transitions now with careers, family, and living situations.
The main part of our discussion was about how much we are looking forward to staying in God’s word and spending time with other girls this summer. We all have busy lives but strongly desire a close relationship with the Lord! We’re looking forward to a wonderful bible study and tasty food!

  29. 779
    Norma says:

Raleigh, NC. – I am starting solo, but anticipating that 2-3 friends will be joining me by July 6. This past school year I returned to full time teaching after 15 years as a SAHM. I love teaching, but desperately miss my morning ladies’ Bible study. Looking forward to going deeper into the Word than the brief devotional time at our school allows us to go. In a word, my life right now is manic. I so deeply long to slow down and linger in the presence of my Savior.

    Cheryl says:

Midlothian, Va solo , married with 2 tween children and career -This is my first blog bible study..but consider Beth a friend. God knew I needed this bible study as I am in as the beginning of a season of big changes in my life. The word for me is Uncertain. I know and love the Lord but my path and future based on the facts before me is uncertain and scary. I want to walk with HIM and trust him totally in spite of my facts as he begins to guide me down new paths. and how perfect this all is as -who did that better than Ruth – so I am pumped. The Judges scriptures rocked me as it spoke so closely to what is happening at work. and the Jemimah scriptures was assurance that he is my GPS and part of the journey is this bible study . praying for you Beth and all of my siestas

My friend, Dawn, and I plan to meet on Tuesdays at a coffee shop. (We had to postpone this week because her little girl got an M&M stuck in her nose last night–she’s ok now and we were able to get together tonight.) We are both married and each have two very active preschoolers. Tonight, we talked about how exciting this time in our lives is yet how frazzled we can become. We both realize that a victorious life doesn’t happen by accident and desire to be intentional about spending time with Jesus this summer.

    Yvonne says:

Sorry to be answering late, but I just got home (literally) from a very long road trip out west with my precious husband of 26 years. We traveled over 5,000 miles in 11 days and we are whooped!!!! However, I did not want to miss checking in.

I will be going solo since I am already in 2 other group Bible studies this summer. I know some of you will think I should not be doing 3, but during the school year, I find it very difficult to do Bible study with a group so I relish my time in the summer. So I guess you can tell from this that I am a teacher. I teach middle school math. I am 40 something wife, mother to 2 grown sons, “mom” to two precious dogs and live in Louisville, KY.

One word about me – hungry. I find myself feeling very dry and hunger for Him and His word at the end of the school year. I do attend Sunday school and church, am part of a Bible study that meets once a week, but I know I am lacking big time when it comes to spending time with The One.

Beth, I’m so sorry, but I am so tired I have forgetten the last question. I promise to be a better student next time. While I know I will miss the face-to-face fellowship of a group for this study, I am excited to be doing it here and look forward to the sweet fellowship among sisters on here. I’m hoping to reconnect with some of the sweet sisters I met when in Houston in January for the SSM Celebration.

    In His love,

    Yvonne

I actually did this earlier today but I couldn’t find my post so I decided to try and do it again!!
We are a group of just two of us in St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada.
I am a married, stay-at-home mom of 6 kids. My partner in the Word is a mom of one adult daughter and a Missionary to International Students during the winter.
We described our present seasons as Waiting (me) and Fulfilled (my friend).
We are both looking forward to getting to know God in a deeper way this summer. I know I am here because of God’s leading and He provided me with someone amazing to walk through His Word with. Can’t wait to see what He is going to do next!!

Hi there! My name is Lori(44)and I live in Acworth, Georgia, just outside of Atlanta. I have been married for 20 years and have 2 daughters ages 18 and 15. I will be going solo for this study. So many words describe my season right now but I guess one that sums it up would be “changing”. My oldest daughter is leaving for college in August. HUGE CHANGE! My goals for this study are: (1)to just soak up God’s word and learn as much as I can (2) to listen to what He has to say to me and (3)to obey Him when He speaks! I can’t wait to get started!

We’re a diverse group – in age, lifestyle, working vs. retired, married/divorced/widowed, mothers/childless/grandmothers; but we all share a love of the Lord and studying His Word. Our words were challenging, fulfilled, persisting, blessing, and blessed. We’re looking forward to growing as women of God in a “sister environment.”

    Nikki says:

Solo in South Mississippi. Since my church recently studied Ruth, I’d decided I didn’t need to do it again so soon. But after reading so many of these comments, and relating to some, I’ve changed my mind. One word to describe this season would be fearful. As my 36th birthday quickly approaches, I’m fearful that I may never marry and have children. My hope thru this study is to see God as my heavenly Boaz, my redeemer, until He chooses to provide an earthly Boaz.

I’m in Houston (NW part of town), a stay at home mom of 2 grown sons and 1 almost grown son (he’s in college, so I still get to consider myself a SAHM when he’s here on vacation!). In one word, my life can be described as CHAOTIC right now! (We all know overwhelmed, confused and stressed comes with that, don’t we!)

I’ve done one, sweet, quiet morning in homework so far and suddenly I’m deeply, richly blessed with the Word of God giving me renewed strength, peace and guidance! …. Selah!

    Thanks Beth for this selection.

I am really new to this. I asked another lady about doing this with me, but she hasn’t gotten back to me and I want to get started, so I’m going solo in Christiansburg, Virginia. I am married and the mother of one son.

“Reflective” is the word I chose for my season. I have been struggling as I watch people I love go through hard times and suffering only to realize that God is teaching me through these experiences too. I’m trying to pay attentioin enough to notice what God is doing in, around, and through these things. My goal is to grow closer to Him. I want to get to the place where I completely trust Him and can say “wherever He leads, I’ll go”. Ruth seemed appropriate for that.

I believe that doing whatever is right in my own sight is just an invitation for disaster and loved the reassurances in the Isaiah passage. Most of the day I had the song written to verse 14 stuck in my head. “Heal me, O Lord, and I will be healed…” I’m so thankful for a God who keeps His promises.

In one word……..endurance. Turn on the evening news, and you’ll see what my family and I have endured for the past 60 something days. My husband is a commercial fisherman, and life as we know it has been forever changed due to the oil spill. But God is faithful, because although my husband watches as his livelihood slowly disappears, he has found employment helping to prevent further damage to oil stricken areas. Still, I count my blessings. I thank God for my rewarding career as a teacher, and that my son received enough scholarships to fully cover the cost of college this fall. God is faithful and He will see us through this. I am so thrilled about this Bible study; last summer I even took my study on vacation and sat poolside reading over my notes. It’s THAT addictive!

Eupora, MS, 8 on Wednesday mornings in my home- with all the children- floating in and out! We have a desire for our children to see our passion and dependency on the Lord. We are all married with children- some babies, some grown with babies! We are one week ahead because we have to be done by school starting. We had rich discussion over Ruth, ch.1!

Hi, I’m a church planting pastors wife in rural Ohio going solo cuz my battery is a bit dry. I need to refuel on my own this time….. I keep wanting to gather but I feel the nudging of the Holy Spirit to remain solo. Never studied Ruth before am totally excited to learn. I have 3 children from the ages of 12, 10, 7, plus a bivocational pastor husband. Quit my job as a RN to complete my role as “Helpmate” in the crazy unique world of planting!

One word = ALTAR. I am at the altar constantly for His guidance, wisdom, and direction! Eph 3:20!!!!

As they see fit is the slogan for our culture today. “How is that working for you?” Phil might say….. idols, Baals, no regard for the treasured items of the temple….. Holy Spirit work in their hearts so that “they” will thirst no more!

Lenexa, Kansas; 14 of us tonight, though our total group is made up of 19 women; Meeting at Westside Family Church. Our group consists of women from all ages, and stages. The main part of our discussion tonight was about where we were currently, and where we hoped to be by the end of our study. (Our one word v. our goal for Bible study.) We also spent some time sharing testimonies of doing “as we saw fit” v. times we completely trusted in the Lord, despite our circumstances and feelings. We had a great time getting to know each other and sharing an Italian themed meal and we are all excited to be walking through this study with the women in our physical group, and our Siesta Sisters all over the world! God bless.
