Siesta Summer Bible Study 3 Launch

Hey, Siestas! It’s time for summer Bible study! For the sake of rich fellowship and vital accountability, we hope as many of you as possible are meeting with small groups and on every other Tuesday or as close to Tuesdays as possible. You are absolutely welcome to join us solo but try to stay as involved as possible in the discussions so that you’ll feel plugged in. This is what you’ll do every other Tuesday:

1. Watch the video so you’ll have your instructions for your gathering or for your solo experience. I will always put the bare bones of the instructions in writing on the post just in case there is a video malfunction.

2. (You will find these instructions reiterated in this post because it’s fundamental to the experience.) If you are in a small group, designate one person who will write a comment to this post briefly telling us about your group and your discussion. It can be a different person each week or the same. START THE COMMENT WITH THE CITY, THE NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS AND LOCATION THEN DESCRIBE YOUR GROUP AND ADD SOMETHING ABOUT YOUR DISCUSSION. For instance, I am meeting with my Monday staff members so my comment will begin with:

Houston, Texas; 8 of us; Meeting at Living Proof Ministries. Our group is primarily made up of…The main part of our discussion was about…(And so forth).

3. If you are going solo, your comment will become the way you complete the assignments. In other words, you’ll see that I ask you to describe this season of your life in one word. In your comment, tell us what that one word would be.

Make the length of it one good, descriptive paragraph. Try not to write too much or readers will tend to skip over it.

This clip is to give instructions for your first gathering – the one you are hopefully having today or in next 24 hours. You can watch this together or your leader can watch it and pass on your instructions.

Summer Bible Study – Week 1 from LPV on Vimeo.

I so hope that makes sense! Now, here are the written instructions for your gathering just in case you can’t get the video to work. Welcome aboard! May God take us on a journey that we’ll treasure for many years. Let’s find the Ruth in us, Siestas!

Today in your small group, here’s what I am asking you to do:

1. If you don’t know each other, spend a few minutes finding out some basic biographical information about one another.  (Single, married, still in school, or in a career. Children, no children. The regular stuff. Keep in mind that everybody fits in Bible study. You don’t need to all be alike. In fact, the more alike you all are, the less you may sharpen one another.)

2. Each of you in your small group characterize your life in this present season in ONE WORD.  Have the leader record these.

3. Each of you in your small group share one specific goal you have this summer for being in Bible study. Have the leader record these, too.

4. Look at the very last verse of the Book of Judges (Judges 21:25) because of its placement just prior to the book we’ll study together this summer. Discuss several specific reasons why doing what each of us sees fit at any given time could be dangerous. After several minutes of discussion, read Jeremiah 17:7-14 and talk about how this segment relates or contrasts to Judges 21:25.

Leader: this is very important. You get back on within 24 hours of meeting and write a brief summation of your group time as a comment to this post. Tell us how many came, your city, and something about your group or your group discussion.

    I’m 41. Married 8 years, 5yo son, 2yo boy/girl twins.
Thus my word is CRAZY!! And hungry for the Lord.
Just trying to balance it all.
Was blessed to see Beth just 2 weeks ago in Denver – we sat very close to her and watched her get her praise on!! It was fun!!

    Hi Siestas!

I am studying solo in Windermere Florida and loving bible study!

    Season: Lonely

Goal: Freedom (Mind & Heart); turn this Mid life Crisis into a Mid Life Mission!

Reference Verses: Love that thought of a tree planted by the water or the reference in Psalms to Oaks of Righteousness…I am surrounded by massive Live Oaks that shelter and shade, ahh to be Strong,Steady and Sheltering, rooted totally in the Lord , doesn’t get any better!

I am a 33-year-old stay-home mom of 2 (3 year old and 4 month old) whose life can only be described as CHAOTIC! I’ve decided to go solo for the summer study because that seemed to be the only way I could find to participate at all. Between a new baby, moving into a new home when she was just 8 weeks old, and staying home with my little ones for the first time, I just haven’t been able to find enough constancy of time to get together a group. The season to spend hours in study will come, I keep telling myself, but, for right now, I find myself surrounded by unpacked boxes, unwashed laundry and dishes, and puttering through Bible study 2 or 3 minutes at a time! But I’m here! Thanks for the opportunity to find community in God’s Word just a little bit at a time!

    Cathy says:

Osage Beach, MO, doing RUTH solo. That’s okay. The one word describing my life is FULL and and time of quiet personal study is probably just what I need right now. I am single, but life is very FULL with job, family obligations, friends and my church. “Doing what we see fit” is very dangerous. Apart from God I am not equipped or smart enough to do anything as I see fit. God sees the beginning from the end and He knows best. My favorite part of the Jeremiah passage is verse 8. What comfort to know that when “the heat comes” God will bless and bring forth fruit in my life, if I trust Him. The heat will come.

Sheri (Riverstones) C. - Ontario says:

I am solo this week… waiting for my Mom to join me…Next session we will be a Mother/Daughter group! We are from Ontario. I am 37, single, no children, off on sick leave. The word that characterizes my life in this present season is RESORATION. God is restoring me through the loss of a worldly identity that was once (and sometimes still is) held dearly and closely, an identity not based on who I am in Him, but one based on who the world said that I was or was not… He is restoring to me my legacy of who I am in Him ALONE… My goal for this study is to soak in who God says that I am… to really know it to the very core of who I am… and stop believing the lies. To comment on Judges and Jeremiah… I believe that we live in a culture that lives by the oath if it feels good… or if its good for you… do it… it must be right… This is dangerous because of our deceitful heart that desires selfish gain and not His glory or righteousness(if left to its own devices)… We become a hedonistic society… we trust our consciousness… but fail to realize that our consciousness is decieving us… Jeremiah tells us that our hope is in the Lord… and that in Him we have our confidence. I don’t know about anyone else but I am tired of doing it my way and ending up hurting people including myself… I’d rather be the tree that draws from the deep waters of His river and be restored and bring forth fruit that others can eat and be energized off of!

We feel as though our group, only consisting of two (Kim and Mylinda), is perfect in size. The Lord has brought us together in this changing time in our lives and walk with Him. We are neighbors living in Nashville and are very excited to be a part of such an amazing city. It seems like every time we get together conversation could go on for hours and most of the time it does. We are looking forward to learning from Ruth, each other and all of you.

Looking forward to doing this study from beginning to end.

Due to vacation schedules, our group here in Hickory, NC was not able to meet last Tuesday so we will have our introductory session this Tuesday. It should be about 5 or 6 ladies of various ages and backgrounds. I am looking forward to what God has in store for all of us this summer. I will post our answers after our first session. Thank you to all of you who have already started sharing.

    Sue Schwendemann says:

I am going solo as of right now. There were going to be two online with me but not so sure now. My season is unplugged/stressed. My goal would be to learn to be closer to God, listen more for that small still voice. On the verses it would be if we are more into ourselves than God not doing/spending time with Him we are open the door to Satan attacks; ( still learning). Also trusting Him more (goal maybe also)?
Blessing to all of you online solo or in a group. My e-mail is as follows [email protected] if anyone needs anything.

    Blessing,
    Sue

-One word for this season of my life: EXPECTANT
-I am immersing myself in Bible study this summer while I have some extra time; I am also doing The Inheritance study with a group of 50+ women on Tuesday nights. I want to “gird” myself with His Word and Truth so that I may stand firm during the tough and unpleasant times!

    Laura Hauser says:

Solo siesta from McKinney, TX doing my first online Bible study.

The word that describes my life right now is “Grandma.” My grandkids actually call me Gigi (because I’m a young grandmother) but the reason I picked that word is because of what my grandmother meant to me. She was the touchstone for our family, all love came through her and everyone, friend, family, or stranger was loved by her. I aspire to put a difficult life behind me and embrace love the way she did.

She lost her dad at 8 years old, had a sister with polio, survived abuse at the hands of family that ‘helped out’ after her mom was widowed, for years loved a man who served bravely in WW2, lost one of her babies and never once lost the sunny disposition of one who’s life mission is to reflect God’s love to everyone.

My goal for the summer is to learn to be more patient and a blessing to others like her by studying the best ever self help book- God’s Word.

  14. 1214
    Julie says:

I was just at your St.Louis conf. and decided to join you for this study. I am anxious to do a study online as this is my first time. I am a part of a Womens Bible Study but we are on summer break so I will be flying solo on this one. I am going through a time of great fear right now so my one word is “fearful”. Thank You and God bless you Beth!!!!!

Our group is made up of women of different ages, different backgrounds and nationalities; coming together to deepen our friendship with each other and our relationship with God. The main part of the discussion was sharing the season of life each one of us is in and contrasting Judges 21:25 and Jeremiah 17:7-14. In between gatherings, we will be writing in a blog what God is speaking to each one of us. Blessings!

Chiming in a little late here due to being out of town all last week, but I’ll catch up in the homework!!

    1. Going solo in Barboursville, WV. I’m 35, divorced, no kids yet but desperately wanting them. I’m a speech therapist for infants and toddlers, a children’s author, and have been attempting for a very very long time to become a foster parent. And I’m an aunt… that’s important. :o)

    2. Waiting.

    3. Goal: to learn something new about the God I love

    4. Obviously the danger in everyone doing what is right in their own eyes is that with no agreed-upon code designed to keep one’s self safe, nobody is safe. We also seem to have a tendency to gravitate toward things that only serve to drag us down and chain us. Jeremiah shows us how trusting and following after God and planting ourselves firmly in His Word will lead us away from those things and into a new and abundant life.

We are 4 friends who are glad to be back in bible study together. We all had different translation of the Word so we read the verses from Jer. and Judges out of each one. We used the NIV, Holman’s, The Message and NLT. We also found out that we didn’t know everything about each other.

I’m Sara, 33 years old, married. I am participating in this study solo from Pittsburgh, PA since my schedule makes it very difficult for me to meet in a small group right now. The word to describe this season in my life is “Chaotic.” I am participating in this study because I have always wanted to study Ruth and saw this study at a Lifeway store several months ago. I am also seeking enrichment and growth in my relationship with Christ.

Abingdon, VA. Seven of us studying in a Women’s Sunday School class on Sunday mornings. We are comprised of ladies ranging from early 30’s to mid-50’s and the class is designed for those who have a difficult time attending in-home weeknight Bible studies. We have been studying together for about two years and have a great time growing in the Word.

Many of us are in the midst of parenting, taking care of our parents and managing careers and the home, so many of our “one word” answers referred to chaotic, busy, stressed, etc. Each of us expressed goals for accountability, growing in the Lord and meeting with God daily.

We are so looking forward to this study and actually stalled a week of our class so we could start with Siestaville!

    BUSY!
I want to continue to study to stay in the WORD and to keep moving forward in my relationship with him. I worked solo on KM”S No other God’s last summer and really got a lot out of it, so pray that this will be a blessing as well.

I want to be like that tree near the water, bearing the fruit of my faith so that my children can see a strong example of what a woman of God is like, having a strong sense of purpose and destination! So many people today just do “as they see fit” and reap the consequences.. that is not what I would like my children to emulate!

Houston (Northwest) solo. Love Beth and the Bible studies. Our church is currently studying the book of Revelation. It was while perusing the Living Proof website that I found the blog and then this summer Bible study for Siestas. I am excited after completing the first day of the study. If I chose one word for my current journey with God, it would be waiting. I am in the midst of a struggle to know God’s will for the next phase of my journey with Him. Do I continue with being relentless in my current situation (my business which is not thriving at the moment) or do I consider that God is complete with this piece of my life and therefore closing the door. I believe He will open the right door when His time is perfect, so I am praying for patience and for wisdom to follow His direction for my life. I look forward to this study to provide the wisdom I am seeking. I look forward to learning from other posts. The ones I have read so far have been very enlightening and encouraging.

We are a group of 5, all family – myself, my mom, my aunt, and my cousins (my aunt’s daughters) ranging in age from late 20’s to mid 50’s. We are a group of new siestas. I have been lurking for months, okay, so really almost a year now, but have never plugged in and participated and am super excited to finally be doing just that. I am also excited to introduce this wonderful blog community to my group.

Our Seasons: Hungry, Longing, Emotional, Confusion, Transition

Our Goals: To be stretched and pushed outside of my current comfort zone; Fellowship; A fresh perspective on the book of Ruth, to learn more about her; Experience new ideas; Support; Strengthen focus on God as guide; Experience 1st Bible Study; Learn something new

Our Discussion: Our God is a God of second chances, which Praise be to Him that he is, given we are a people who need just that. The Jeremiah scripture reminds us to keep perspective during trials; although we don’t always ‘feel’ thankful, we must always ‘give’ thanks. Our thoughts our ours-only, quite often leading to a battlefield of the mind. Forgiveness is often for yourself more than anything…to free yourself from that battlefield in your mind. It is much easier to do what “we” think is right – act first, pray later – how backwards! But daily dependence on God, in all things, is the only way to truly living “freely.”

    Andrea says:

    Andrea from Alexandria, Louisiana

I’m doing this Bible study solo.

One word that describes this current season is “regenerating”.

I’m in this Bible study because I want more insight into Gods Word from God quickening his Word to me as I see how it relates to our study.

I think it can be dangerous as well as dumb whenever we do what seems right in our own eyes because we’re separating ourselves from the rich stores of perfect wisdom of God. What we do also affects other people and our lives are supposed to reflect God’s light to the world.

    Jill says:

It has been ten years since my husband and I left our home state. I was pregnant with our first child then. We moved back recently with three healthy, great kids (10, 8, 5). It has been almost two weeks now, and I just realized I haven’t put my clothes in my dresser. They are just stacked around the bedroom, as if this is just temporary. We came back for good reason, and I AM happy to be closer to family, but my heart is heavy. Because I’m back in a place I couldn’t wait to leave when I was growing up. Every box I unpack, I feel like saying to God,even now, “Really?” My one word is: full-circle. My goal is to accept where God has me. I see that He brings many people back to their beginning as part of His plan for restoration. I do want that. Save me and I will be saved. Yes. But, at this point, I really think we could have accomplished that same thing if we would have rented.

    Sue says:

I am solo here from SW Virginia. I am 51 and have been married for 30 years and we have a precious 17 year old special needs child. She has taught us so much in her limited ways and is the light of our lives.

My one word for this time is longing. This goes for many areas of my life right now. Longing to be closer to Him and longing to know His will which can be so hard to know at times.

Our hearts are so deceitful sometimes without even meaning to be but those who trust in the Lord are blessed!

I am so looking forward to this study as I love the story of Ruth. My desire is to be like Him! I want to not only know that God is my rock, my fortress…..but to believe it with all my heart.

Our group has been meeting on Tuesday nights for almost 5 years, and this is the first official Bible study we’ve done together. Discussion for our first night focused on the fact that most of us desperately need a time designated for Bible study and we all look forward to growing closer to God during this summer.

    Hello Siestas,
I already posted my introduction and comments earlier, but am searching for a Siesta Sister in the summer study who lives near Canton, GA, or perhaps someone, also who might attend one of the churches hosting Living Proof Live in September. I would love to meet someone in this area. I attend First Baptist Church, Canton with my husband and four children (ages 3 -12). Thank you so much and have a blessed, wonderful, awesome day!

    Kristen Hood says:

    1. There are 2 of us doing this study together: Kristen and Jaime. Both early 30’s from San Antonio, Texas. We are registered nurses, however we both are now full-time SAHMs, and only “work” once a week. We met in the hospital, quickly connected with similar interests, values, and with our love of our Lord.
    2. Jaime = New Mommy. Learning to juggle the new aspects of her life with the more familiar ones as well: wife, (new) mommy, being true to her personal and spiritual self, nurse, sister, daughter, etc.
Kristen = Layered. Best understood by Charles Dickens’ quote, “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times…” My life is blessed, happy, fulfilled, yet stressful, unknown, and challenging.
    3. Our goals are similar for taking and completing this Bible study: to reconnect with our Lord. We both feel that we are closest to Him when we are studying him in a more structured way.
    4. By doing what we see fit all the time, takes us away from what our Lord wants us to do. If we follow our own ways, and not His, we are not leading ourself to His promises, and in fact we are turning from His meaning for our lives. All too often, we are tempted to follow our own intuition without consulting and praying to our Lord for His guidance. He promises fruition, wholeness, and safety—we just have to follow Him, and do as He wants us to do. We must follow our true Compass—our Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ—in everything we pursue.

I’m looking forward to this! I’m 54, battling MS and the recent loss of my dear Daddy, and being carried along by the Grace of God! My favorite verse right now… I am a nursing professor and I tell my students that verse all the time. I know I am not supposed to talk religion to my students, but I can’t help it… and it is my hope that even if I don’t discuss it verbally, they will see it through my actions.

    Debbie says:

I had at first planned on doing this study solo but, God has just revealed to me that I have to get a group of women to do this with me. I feel compelled to do this to the point I can’t wait to get this organized. I didn’t think that I had enough energy in me due to tremendous life stresses. But, God is my strength and who am I to say that I can’t do this when I have the Lord literally “pushing” me to do this!!! I wonder what He has in mind for all of this!!! Teeheehee! Don’t you just love Him!! Now with all of that said, the answers to your questions, Beth!! 1-One word for my life in this present season would have to be “chaos”. 2-specific goal for this study would be to receive a fresh touch from the Holy Spirit and to grow even closer to God. Happy studying everybody. Oh, by the way…my Mother named me Ruth after Ruth in the bible!

Chattanooga, TN – 7 ladies(though we had several who couldn’t come the first time) in our 30s and 60s – Single, Married, Divorced – Met in my living room where we had Chicken Enchiladas and Mexican Ice cream sundaes- yum! We come from at least 3 denominations and some have done lots of Bible studies and for some it is a first! Our seasons are charaterized as Waiting, Happy, Patience, Trusting, Thankful, Limbo, and Chaos. We talked over the questions and scripture but I think most significantly each woman is excited and seeking the Lord from 7 different perspectives. I know He will have much to teach all of us and reach us right where we are. I truly believe He has a purpose for each a every woman who was there and those that will join us next time.

Louisville, Kentucky, Just me, I have a 6 month old and 7 year old step-son. My husband is in the Army and we are moving to KS in July and leaving behind all our family including my step-son! 4 years ago God used “Breaking Free” to completely change my life and unfortunately I have pulled away from Him. Life got in the way; dating, marriage, baby, laziness, you name it! At one point, during that study and close to the time after, reading my Bible was like air! I needed it so much that I read The Message in like 3 months. I was ON FIRE! for God…now, not so much. I’m tired, sad and hurting. I read/watched every thing I could get my hands/eyes on from Beth Moore. I pulled away from her, too. I love her and God uses her to speak to me in ways I don’t get from anyone else in my sphere of influence. I hope I can continue this Bible study for the summer! I need and want God again and I hope this is how I will get back to Him. THANKS!

    1. Simmering & Blustery (that’s sort of funny put together)!

    2. Ever Changing but constant things with our children & A lot of distractions… Getting side tracked by the “Wind”.

    3. To stay accountable & to stay focused.

    4. As We see fit most times tranlates into what fits Us!

The contrast between the scriptures is in Judges it’s all about us… Jeremiah is all about God…

We are very excited about this study! I did No other Gods and when I cracked open the Ruth study it was like connecting with an old friend. I love Kelly’s style!

    We love you all!

    EG Mamas says:

We are 3 moms living in Elk Grove, CA. We are all married and most of our children are in school now. There are 10 children between us and we’ve known each other for 7 years. We’ve taken numerous Beth Moore studies and thoroughly enjoy her passion and love for the Lord. We’ve seen her live and in simulcasts and thank God for speaking to us through this woman so we can learn more about our God and stay on the right track, even during the pits in life. We are excited to do another summer siesta study.

Dena-WAITING-her goal is staying focused in the Word.

Emily-BELIEVING-wants accountability of staying in God’s Word over the summer and strives to memorize verses.

Rebecca-TRUSTING-keeping plugged in to what God wants for my life.

We are all aware of the dangers and temptations in our world and want to stay close to God and listen to His words so that we choose the path He has for us and store our treasures in heaven.

Ugh! Ugh, ugh and superginormous UGH!!! That’s what I get for streamlining my summer time to the point that I didn’t read the LPM blog for a time. I missed the starting line on this study. Can’t wait to get my little ones in bed tonight so I can pour over this and jump right in. Thank you,…I mean T-H-A-N-K Y-O-U, Beth, for your ministry to us and for your entire family’s part in reaching our hearts for Christ.
    Blessings,

5 of us in WNY (Appleton, NY) meeting at church, Hess Road Wesleyan on Sunday Evenings for two hours.
Our group is made ages 38-48.
We discovered how each of us have walked where the other is or was, every stage of marriage.
We also discovered that none of us have a best friend. Wow ~ is that sad, honestly, we are all a friendly, non-scary bunch, honest. While that made us laugh, we realized quickly why it is US that are together for this study.
Looking forward to sharing much with these ladies.

I am on day 4 of the first week and this study is really speaking to me. I am really enjoying it. I love that I can do this at home…but still feel like I am participating in a group.

    Missouri- Just God and I!

    One word: Seeking!

Goal: To understand that this season serves a purpose in my life-

wow, the lives we can/could change if we chose to go our way without the precious consulting and direction of our Lord

I am 36, mother of one, wife and a school Media Specialist (librarian)doing this study solo in West Central MN. I am looking forward to my time off this summer. The president of our school encouraged saff to repristinate this summer, restore to an original condition or state, I am looking to repristinate my love for my God.

My one word is Unfocused. I feel that I have so many areas that I need to work on and don’t know which to tackle first.

In thoes days Israel had no king; everyone did as he saw fit. — The problem is my vision is so limited, even when I think I understand the ramifications of my actions I am sure I am often oblivious to the real effects of my decisions. And that doesn’t account for the fact that my intensions are often selfserving and not God honoring. He blesses thoes that have confidence in Him. I need to look to Him to provided the guidance to find what is “right”.
