So, who are we, everybody?

Saturday morning update: OH MY WORD, YOU GUYS! THIS TURNED OUT TO BE ONE OF MY FAVORITE THINGS EVER ON THIS BLOG! SO MUCH FUN! You guys are incredibly interesting. I am knocked out right now with a sense of awe that God would allow me to interact with you. I have tons of respect for you guys. Keep doing the thing and keep resisting the cookie cutter despite the (Christian??) social pressure. You are much more interesting this way. Just hold close to Jesus and don’t let being different become it’s own pretense or attention-getter. Keep that gorgeous authenticity that makes this community my favorite cyber spot on earth. Good grief, I am so thankful for y’all.

Hey, everybody! It’s been a long time since we’ve done a survey to see who God has brought together to form this sisterhood. It’s a blast not only to behold our common bonds in Christ but to revel in our diversity as a community of very different people committed to one glorious Savior. We’d be bored stiff if we only opened our hearts and lives to those who are just like us. If we have to line up exactly on about 100 points of doctrine, we are liable to get pretty lonely. We don’t even necessarily have to work out a difference to our mutual satisfaction to treat one another with mutual esteem and to honestly love one another. Always preferring someone remarkably similar across the table from us still smells a lot like Narcissus. We may even be fooling ourselves but, at the end of the day, it’s just another form of mirror gazing. Gross.

When I get to see a group of you out there after a Living Proof Live, I always wish I could freeze the moment and stare at each of you one by one. It is the most incredibly refreshing sight. You cannot fathom how different we look in person, all banded together in a holy huddle. It makes me so dang happy. It is clear in that context that we were drawn together by something so far removed from packaging. You and I know that is Jesus. Oh, how I pray that God smiles when He drops in on this community, holds time tightly in His hand, and stares at each of us one by one.

“These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full. This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.” John 15:11-12

OK! What do you say we do a survey? Complete each of the following as succinctly as possible. Lindsee and I will LOVE bringing these in. Let’s do this today for the pure Jesus-joy of celebrating community!

1. Your name and where you live.

2. Your age or general age grouping (grin)

3. When did you accept Jesus as your personal Savior and, in briefest possible terms, what was the setting?

4. What line of work are you in? Or, if you’re in school, tell us where and what line of work you’re steering toward. (Do not hesitate to tell us you’re a stay-at-home-mom. No harder work exists nor longer hours.)

5. What is your #1 hobby?

6. Are you currently invested in a local body of believers? If so, which one?

7. Do you have pets? If so, you surely know we’ve got to know what kind.

8. Your biggest recent disappointment – slash – your biggest recent elation.

9. Describe your idea of the perfect Saturday.

10 Complete this sentence: Only people who really know me realize that I am ___________________________________________________________________.

    Vivian says:

    Vivian Holley, Birmingham, Alabama
    Age – 57

Accepted Jesus as my Saviour at GA Camp, Shocco Springs, July 1966

I work as a bookkeeper for Pediatric Practice owned by Children’s Hospital of Alabama

Reading (Bible reading & study is priority and most loved! I especially enjoy reading different translations. When I go to the bookstore to choose a new study I just want to do them all! Reading missionary biographies and historical fiction as well as good classics by Charles Dickens, C.S. Lewis, and George MacDonald draw me. Then besides reading Beth’s books and studies, I enjoy following the writings of Max Lucado, Sheila Walsh, and John MacArthur.) (Needlework & Knitting are very close rivals to reading but the spare time runs out!)

Belong to Westwood Baptist Church, Birmingham, Alabama

I have cats! Lots of them because I take care of strays and their kittens. (We have sort of a cat mission since we have a large yard with woods around us. We are working toward a more controlled population as the ones we can catch get that most needed surgery!)

My disappointment is that my friend/coworker of 19 years lost her battle with breast cancer on September 18, 2012. My joy is that my Heavenly Father has constantly reminded me He is with me in all the difficult things that are going along with this bereavement. On the day of her funeral a day lily I have that has never bloomed in September, bloomed! I joy in how my Father is loving me!

The perfect Saturday…It begins with a cup of coffee and my devotional time on the back porch. The birds are at the feeders and a cat is on my lap and several others are sleeping around me. I read the Word, converse with my Father, read some more of His Words, pray, read about missionaries, pray for them, meditate, rest and delight in His Presence. Then my husband and I go to a natural site and hike some trails enjoying our Father’s world, (This is most enjoyable in the early spring or on a cool October day.) On the way home we find a restaurant with some good county cooking and eat our fill. Arrive home to get a hot shower and change to clean, comfy clothes to lounge around with a good book and a cup of coffee. Then as the day concludes my husband and I have our prayer and Bible reading time together. Then get a good night’s rest in preparation for Sunday worship.

Only people who really know me realize that I have had some hard things to deal with in the past and am dealing with some rough situations right now. His strength, His grace, His Words – they get me through each day.

    Maryann says:

I’m Maryann and I’m from Anderson, SC. I’m 32 and I accepted Jesus into my life in 2005 while sitting alone in the back row of NewSpring Church bawling my eyes out like a baby. I was raised Catholic, but after living a very religious life with no real relationship with Christ and struggling with a drinking problem, I needed a Savior and I needed to come home. My line of work is a disability claims rep for the federal government – I’ve been doing the exact same job for the past ten years. My #1 hobby is distance running and I’m currently training for my 3rd half marathon on 11/3/12 in Savannah, GA. I am sold out invested in NewSpring Church in Anderson, SC. I am a small group leader along with my husband who also serves on the Community Impact Team. We have two four-legged children named Sammy and Pearl – they are both boxers as well as full-time comedians and love muffins. My biggest recent disappointment is having to take my 2nd leave of absence from my job in the last two years. Career burnout/emotional burnout has taken over me again, and it breaks my heart that it’s come to this again. The perfect Saturday for me depends on what season it is. . . in the summer, it’s a full day on Edisto Beach topped off with a long run on the island. If it’s a beautiful fall day like today, it’s a long hike with my love in the nearby Blue Ridge Mountains. Only people that really know me realize that I am battling some serious darkness in my life right now.
