So, who are we, everybody?

Saturday morning update: OH MY WORD, YOU GUYS! THIS TURNED OUT TO BE ONE OF MY FAVORITE THINGS EVER ON THIS BLOG! SO MUCH FUN! You guys are incredibly interesting. I am knocked out right now with a sense of awe that God would allow me to interact with you. I have tons of respect for you guys. Keep doing the thing and keep resisting the cookie cutter despite the (Christian??) social pressure. You are much more interesting this way. Just hold close to Jesus and don’t let being different become it’s own pretense or attention-getter. Keep that gorgeous authenticity that makes this community my favorite cyber spot on earth. Good grief, I am so thankful for y’all.

Hey, everybody! It’s been a long time since we’ve done a survey to see who God has brought together to form this sisterhood. It’s a blast not only to behold our common bonds in Christ but to revel in our diversity as a community of very different people committed to one glorious Savior. We’d be bored stiff if we only opened our hearts and lives to those who are just like us. If we have to line up exactly on about 100 points of doctrine, we are liable to get pretty lonely. We don’t even necessarily have to work out a difference to our mutual satisfaction to treat one another with mutual esteem and to honestly love one another. Always preferring someone remarkably similar across the table from us still smells a lot like Narcissus. We may even be fooling ourselves but, at the end of the day, it’s just another form of mirror gazing. Gross.

When I get to see a group of you out there after a Living Proof Live, I always wish I could freeze the moment and stare at each of you one by one. It is the most incredibly refreshing sight. You cannot fathom how different we look in person, all banded together in a holy huddle. It makes me so dang happy. It is clear in that context that we were drawn together by something so far removed from packaging. You and I know that is Jesus. Oh, how I pray that God smiles when He drops in on this community, holds time tightly in His hand, and stares at each of us one by one.

“These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full. This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.” John 15:11-12

OK! What do you say we do a survey? Complete each of the following as succinctly as possible. Lindsee and I will LOVE bringing these in. Let’s do this today for the pure Jesus-joy of celebrating community!

1. Your name and where you live.

2. Your age or general age grouping (grin)

3. When did you accept Jesus as your personal Savior and, in briefest possible terms, what was the setting?

4. What line of work are you in? Or, if you’re in school, tell us where and what line of work you’re steering toward. (Do not hesitate to tell us you’re a stay-at-home-mom. No harder work exists nor longer hours.)

5. What is your #1 hobby?

6. Are you currently invested in a local body of believers? If so, which one?

7. Do you have pets? If so, you surely know we’ve got to know what kind.

8. Your biggest recent disappointment – slash – your biggest recent elation.

9. Describe your idea of the perfect Saturday.

10 Complete this sentence: Only people who really know me realize that I am ___________________________________________________________________.

So… After much prayer and contemplation I’ve decided perhaps someone in addition to you may benefit from hearing my story – so I will write it here. πŸ™‚

My birth experience proved very traumatic and my mother nearly died as a result. It took her a long time to recover after I was born, and we did not bond well as a result.

She was also raised the ninth of ten children and suffered wounds from living in a household where there was never enough. My mother loved us and took care of us far better than she had been taken care of as a child, still hurt people tend to hurt people and my momma did hurt me in little ways she did not know were hurting me.

I got the message very early that as a child, I proved anything but pleasing to my mother and I wanted more than anything to be loved, accepted and valued. Over and over again I overheard my mother tell others I was her “problem child” and that I had “almost killed” her when I was born, and had “given” her high blood pressure. She didn’t mean it was my fault, but my heart of hearts heard it just that way – everything that was wrong in my mother’s life I grew to feel responsible for.

At 8 years old our family moved to a small rural area just outside the D/FW metro area. We left our large urban home and moved to a trailer park where our family of five undertook the task of helping my father build his dream home.

By the end of that semester in school my parents received word I was failing for the first time ever in my better than average school career. (I had been a very good student up until this time.) The report they received was that I had not been turning in my work.

For six weeks I was grounded to my bedroom and required to do double homework each night. At the end of the week I would receive my graded work from my teacher and at the end of the day she instructed us to clean out our desks and through any graded work away. I did as she instructed. My parents were still receiving reports I was not turning in my work. On top of being grounded and completing double assignments, I was now being corporeally punished as well. This went on until the end of the grading period. My parents met with the teacher and in that meeting it was realized that I had been turning in the work, but the teacher had not recorded my grades because she had overlooked my name in her gradebook each time she recorded the scores. My parents explained to me that my teacher had made a mistake and she even apologized for not recording my grades, but no one ever said that all the punishment I had received was not earned. As a matter of fact, it could be heard in my home often that even if you didn’t deserve to be punished you’d eventually do something to earn it. I made a vow in my young heart that if I was going to get punished I would have a good time doing it.

I grew up among friends who were more popular, prettier and well at times crueler than I knew people could be. By the time I was twelve years old I was being tormented by these girls daily at lunch threatened and mocked in demeaning fashion. I did everything I knew to fit in and more. They still treated me very badly and I wanted so desperately to be accepted that I took the punishment and continued to call them my friends.

Boys made fun of me… and as an adult I would learn from one who had been a close friend that they all thought I was too good for them – I just thought they didn’t find me attractive. I saw myself as fat and unpopular – undesirable.

I joined the choir in middle school and had decided at 9 years of age that I wanted to be Loretta Lynn when I grew up. Maybe because my mother loved Loretta Lynn or maybe because I really thought it would be fun to sing at the Grand Ole Opry… or a little of both. Perhaps I just liked wigs and lacy evening gowns. Whatever the reason, I wanted to be a singer. I joined choir and learned to sing and read music. In 8th grade I entered the solo and ensemble contest with the solo song, “Wayfaring Stranger.” I practiced regularly and had it down. At the competition we waited our turn standing outside. When I walked in for my turn before the judges my teacher must have seen my face turn pale because he simply said, “Sing it for me just like you did in the classroom.”

I turned to look at the expressionless judges and felt an earthquake begin in my feet and work it’s way right up my entire body and out of my throat as my voice quavered through the entire song.

I walked away and swore I would never get up in front of people and make a fool out of myself like that again.

By 16 years of age I had been sexually traumatized by an extended member of our family and lost my virginity in the event. It broke my heart and made me wish for death. I also feared being blamed for what happened so I kept it a secret. By the time I was seventeen I dated a very troubled older man and found myself pregnant just a few weeks before the beginning of my senior year.

I had my son a few months before I graduated, I had been abandoned by his father and my family situation was not good. I carried a lot of pain and rebellion in my heart and my parents generally disapproved of most of my choices. I left home when I graduated in the fall. I ended up in several abusive relationships and was a mother of three and divorced by the time I was 21 years old. My new found freedom from marriage and wounded soul drove me into a season of “wild” prodigal living. I drug my three kids through the muck and the mire. My history is both colorful and scandalous – and today is utterly redeemed but not without the marks that accompany a life lived in the stench of the pigs.

My husband and I met during my prodigal season and together we found a church home and gave up our two nights in a honky tonk a week for three services a week at church. We rose to leadership roles in the church. I eventually began “leading” women’s Bible study but would not receive the title women’s minister. First of all, most of the women in our Bible study were older than I was by 15-20 years. And, I felt totally disqualified for leadership because of my past. Still, the woman who invited me to lead the study and encouraged me to take it on on my own back doored me into the role. I avoided studies like “Breaking Free” and “When Godly People Do Ungodly Things” like the plague – praying with everything in me that no one would ever discover the shameful details of my past. As you have often said, “I just wanted to keep the monster down.”

My worst fear was that the lock would come off the closet of my mind and all my skeletons would come rattling out of the closet on full display for everyone to see.

When we left some four years later I was indeed the Women’s Ministry Leader and on staff at the church. I had stood in front of the women, shared my heart, prayed for the women even spoken to the entire church body about special events and sharing testimonies. Each time I felt that earthquake start in my knees but found a way to move beyond the nerves to a place of success. Still, in the back of my mind I knew that if they really knew about me I would be disqualified and dismissed.

Beth, as I watched you on the screen I would ask God to make me just a portion of the woman of God you were. But, I also heard things in my heart like, “You don’t have to look like that.”

“You don’t have to sound like that…”

I thought at first it was wishful thinking, but as I grew in my role as a leader, I realized there was something more inside of me – something God-sized that He wanted to do. And, come what may I submitted to follow Him to and through it no matter what it meant I would have to uncover and deal with.

Since we left that small community of believers in 2007 and come to Gateway Church I’ve grown in healing and maturity. I’ve come to embrace my calling to a larger platform of ministry and am now walking that out as He leads. Confirmation has come to me through so many areas and places as I have learned to walk in obedience. It was a little more than a year ago when I agreed to teach two classes- one on shame and one on forgiveness for a divorce recovery class in our church.

As I sat with the group leaders in the room before the class began they asked, “Are you nervous?” I thought for a minute… No… not really. Somewhere between that small Baptist community of women and that night in the class my fear had lessened. I still have a reverent, cautious fear about speaking in front of others. I carry the weight of that into every lesson I write and teach. But, today, I do not feel an earthquake in my body or fear looking foolish before men. I only concern myself with bringing honor and glory to God through my testimony of faith in spite of living through nearly every one of my worst confessed fears.

The thing I struggle with today is, and I have written to you about it privately, how to tell the less honorable parts of my story authentically without seeming to glory in the sin. I’m learning as I go and finding a place of settlement with the Lord on these things.

Some people may disqualify me as a result of the choices I made in my late teens and early twenties. I understand and accept that – But to those to whom I am called to minister to — I am going to tell my story and relate His glory to the best of my ability until He calls me home. And, that’s my story and I am sticking to it.

Thank you for asking Beth. I love you, and appreciate you so much. You helped me find my way out of a pit and into a place of peace, joy, purpose and blessing.

        Always,
        M

Elation- watching the simulcast in the hospital on a friend’s laptop; and allowing Beth and Travis et. al. to witness to at least 20 hospital personnel who would not have otherwise heard the message. I had been fighting an infection for two weeks prior to this and had spent Thursday night and Friday morning in ER observation before going to a regular room. The infection magically–no, Providentially- went away on Friday. Then on Saturday, at about 3:30pm, when the Simulcast was winding down, a hospital on-staff doctor came into my room and said, “We’re sending you home because you’re not sick.” One CNA in particular had made an effort to be in my room doing paperwork for some of the Beth parts; and for the sinner’s prayer. I know I was there for that reason. Praise our Omniscient God!!!
