Siesta Summer BIble Study III Launch
Video greeting from Kelly Minter
_______________
I can’t believe the blog has been around long enough for us to be having our third annual Siesta Summer Bible Study! Wow! We had an amazing time studying Kelly Minter’s No Other Gods in 2008 and Jennifer Rothschild’s Me Myself and Lies in 2009.
It’s finally time to announce the book that we’ll be going through together in the summer of 2010 – Kelly Minter’s Ruth: Loss, Love & Legacy! We’re thrilled that Kelly has written another study and can’t wait to dive into it with all the Siestas.
Let me fill you in on some details.
Who: As before, we want you to assemble a group of in-real-life friends, co-workers, family members, acquaintances, church family, Siestas in your town, neighbors, or whatever mix of ladies God puts on your heart.
What: Spend the summer together in the Word! Our workbook (also called a “member book”) is a 6-week Bible study on the Book of Ruth. We will meet every other week to discuss two weeks of our homework.
When: We are partial to Tuesday since that’s our normal night for Bible study at LPM. So we will launch our SSBS3 on Tuesday, June 22, and “meet” every other Tuesday until August 3. Yes, you can meet another day of the week if necessary but you’ll see when the time comes that it’s the most fun when we all do it on the same day.
I’ll give you the basic schedule now so you’ll know what to expect but Beth willย have much more to say about it closer to the time of our launch. If we don’t answer your questions now, save them and see if they get answered within the next several weeks.
Tuesday, June 22, 2010 (1st Mini-Session/LAUNCH/Group instructions)
(DO WEEKS ONE AND TWO OF HOMEWORK ON YOUR OWN.)
Tuesday, July 6, 2010 (2nd Mini-Session/Group Instructions)
(DO WEEKS THREE AND FOUR OF HOMEWORK ON YOUR OWN.)
Tuesday, July 20, 2010 (3rd Mini-Session/Group Instructions)
(DO WEEKS FIVE AND SIX OF HOMEWORK ON YOUR OWN.)
Tuesday, August 3, 2010 (4th Mini-Session/Conclusion)
Where: Wherever you are most comfortable. Kelly’s workbooks are part of the Living Room Series. Her core group of ladies meets in her living room and they always share a meal together. In fact, you’ll find recipes in the workbook if you’d like to use them. We think that’s a really fun part of the experience. The first summer my group met in a different house each week and last summer we met in the same house each week. We’ve had some siesta groups meet in restaurants and coffee shops. Do whatever works for you and your ladies.
Why: A summer lived in Bible study is one lived in victory!
How:
1. Get your workbooks. LifeWay will have plenty of them for us, but you won’t want to wait until the last minute. You can find them online on LifeWay’s web site and on Kelly Minter’s web site.
2. Assemble your small group. You are more than welcome to participate solo or with an online discussion group, but for the sake of richest fellowship and best accountability, try as hard as you can to enlist three or four other women to meet with you every other Tuesday. Let the ladies know that the gatherings will be low on stress and high on much needed fellowship and rich discussion. Keep the emphasis on a relaxed and refreshing atmosphere where you can develop some wonderful relationships in Christ.
3. Sign up on the blog on our official Launch Day- Tuesday, June 22. We’ll ask you a few fun questions about your group.
4. Beth will facilitate the study by posting 15-minute videos on the mornings our meeting days. They will have instructions for discussion questions and activities that will be based on the previous two weeks of study. The videos will be like the ones you’re used to seeing on this blog – very casual and homemade! The idea is to incorporate the videos into the beginning of your meeting times if possible. In case the video aspect of the study doesn’t work for you, you will also find the discussion questions typed out on the blog.
5. After your gathering, you’ll check back in by telling us something about your meeting via a comment on that same post. Don’t worry if your group can’t meet on Tuesdays. You’ll still be able to find the post and comment throughout the week.
What if:
-I want to use the discussion questions in the back of the workbook instead of the ones on Beth’s videos. Go for it!
-I really, really want to do the study but it’s not in the budget. Email me.
–I’ve already committed to doing another Bible study this summer? That’s great! Stick with it.
-I don’t want to participate but still want to be a part of the blog. We totally understand and want to see you around Siestaville this summer. Know that the Bible Study will only take up one post every other week.
We look forward to getting started next month!
Love,
Amanda
I was actually considering doing this study with my college girls before I even read this… does anyone who has already looked at it know if it would be good for that age group (19 – 22 year old girls)?
It will work fine for college girls! I just finished this study and I think it would work for teens on up.
It would be PERFECT for them, Amy Beth!! PERFECT.
I don’t have time to read it all first and give it a ‘test run’ before meeting weekly with a brand new Sister who wants to learn! Would it be a good one to jump into with her?
I have done the study and also have a college group that I am considering doing this with this summer… They will love it!!!
If there are any other Newport News Virginia area gals out there, I would love to do this study with a group.
Katie ..I am in Providence Forge in New Kent. I am looking for a group as well!
Katie,
I live in Newport News as well, and also attend PWOC at Fort Eustis, email me… [email protected]

YAY!! I finally get to do one WITH you guys!! I’m so stinkin’ excited!
I’ve been directing one of the larger homeschool co-ops in the area, but God gave me leave to resign this year and now I have the whole summer free! (you can imagine a deer caught in headlights look there) It’s been five years since I’ve had a completely free summer (four kids and a real estate company not included in the “completely free” part) and I’ll be ordering the book tomorrow. Obviously, I’m tickled pink! ๐
YAY! I’m in!!!!! Can’t wait, I’m 3 for 3 of SSBS!!!!! ๐
YES! I have been looking forward to doing this study in particular since I learned about it last December at Deeper Still! I am so very excited! AND it will be concluded in plenty of time before baby girl comes in September (or the end of August if she should prefer ๐ that I won’t be trying to finish the study with a newborn. I can’t wait to tell my mother-in-law what study we’ll be doing…she was with me at Deeper Still when we got promo material about the Ruth study and she will be overjoyed! Cannot wait to join in with the other Siestas…it’ll be amazing. (And I am SO going to try those recipes! The ones in the promo goodies – chicken enchiladas and the mexican ice cream sundaes – look delicious! I’d love to hear from anyone that has tried them! ๐
It’s the best chicken enchiladas ever!! You have never tasted anything so good, honest. One of my favorite recipes!
Awesome! Hopefully my husband will let me spend the money on the book, so I can do this while “trapped” at Boy Scout camp this summer.
cool. my pastor just preached a wonderful mother’s day sermon from Ruth. Delving into it more sounds great.
I cannot wait to try out Siesta Summer Bible Study blog. It’ll be my first summer to join in the group. Planning to go solo and planning to buy the book tomorrow.
Leah,
I would encourage you to try to find a group (or even one other person ) to do the study with you. It is a HUGE help for accountability. I didn’t have a group last year and ended up getting way behind. To my shame, I never caught back up.
Deirdre
Hey Deirdre,
Don’t feel bad about what happened last summer. If it makes you feel better, I didn’t have a Bible study book to work with last summer but you did. So, you’re one step ahead of me than that last summer. My bad. Thanks for encouraging me but I can’t promise you that I will join a group. I love being with people that I know but I find it better to learn on my own than in a group when it comes to the Bible & bible studies. I’m hard of hearing. It’s too confusing, it’s hard to keep up with what everyone is saying back and forth and then I lost track of the conversation and then I have no idea what is he/she talking about and what does this have to do with this topic, etc.? Maybe I will have a better chance doing it online bible study group and have less confusions of understanding. That is if I can find a group?
Again, thanks for encouraging me. Hope you will find a group to do with summer too.
Leah, let me add a little more encouragement for you. I have a small group of wonderful ladies that is led by a fabulous sister who is also hearing impaired. We meet in her home because she doesn’t feel comfortable meeting anywhere else. We all respect that she can’t hear well and has to see our lips, and we all respect her disadvantages. We do our homework separately and then join on Sundays to learn together. PLEASE consider joining a group, or beginning your own on you own terms! I now have a VERY close group of women that I call friends, and I’m not very friendly :)!
I will be going solo also as my husband, poodle and I will be traveling all summer. This way I can stay connected to other women and maybe be sane when we return ๐
Me too, Leah!!! We’ll learn together!
Hi~
I couldn’t figure out how to email, so I’ll post my question here. You can email me back if you’d like. I am overseas as a missionary and last year, I did a Bible study with 2 of my Peruvian missionary co-workers and it was GREAT. I’m interested in participating in this one, but I don’t know how we’d get the books here. Does any place ship overseas? And if so, what kind of a price are we looking at to do so? None of us have a lot of extra cash lying around, but there’s really not a lot of Bible studies available to us here. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Lisa–
Please e-mail me .. I would love to purchase a few books for you and send them to you by mail if you can get packages in the mail. I was a missionary for 2 years in nepal and i know what it is like to feel that desperate need for community and spiritual food. My e-mail address i [email protected]. I would love to get to know more about your ministry and how i can pray for you fellow siesta!
Jenn
Hi Lisa,
It looks like the book is $12.95. I’m willing to get them for you, send them to you and you can reimburse as you are able. Email me if you are interested in doing it that way: [email protected]
lovingly,
Barb
hey lisa! my goodness, fancy running into you here!! amazon definitely ships overseas; that’s how us sepik ladies have gotten our study books in PNG ~ and if you get enough of them i think i’ve noticed a shipping discount before, so check it out!! check amazon, or half.com /ebay!
Hi Sepik-meri Katie – where in PNG are you? Do you know Cristel Churchill (now Boedecker)?! She was in Lae for 5 years and is now on Guam.
Hi Katie! How are you? So neat to run into you here – and I heard that you also ‘ran into’ my mom! Are you doing this study? I’d love to connect and hear about how things are going for you. Are you on facebook? Krista Brubacher
Lisa- I’m on the other side of the world from you (Lebanon) but haven’t had much luck with companies (like Amazon) shipping to us because of “customs” charges etc but having books sent in a package usually works.
Hi Kelli,
Are you needing a book(s) mailed to you?
๐
Barb
Thanks so much for asking Barb! My parents are coming in July so I’ll either have them bring it and just start a few weeks late or maybe get them to mail me one early so I can start on time. I’ll tell them to put it in my birthday package since our start date June 22 is my b-day and I’m trying to drum up sympathy since my 36th b-day is causing a mental breakdown like none other has! ๐
Ahhh the 22nd – I seem to know a lot of “22nd” people! All in different months – I am one myself, in March! ๐ 36 – I think that sounds like a great number!!! Why is it causing you concern? You are still young!!! And from your website, it looks like you have 3 beautiful girls to enjoy while they are at home. ๐
Praying for you! love, Barb
Wow – thank you ladies for your help! ๐ I received two emails from other Siestas who offered to send the books down for us. We really appreciate the help!
And Katie – HI! Small world. Hope you’re doing well!
-lisa
Yeah!!!! I love Siesta Summer Bible Study! This will be a wonderful study.
Thanks Amanda!
Adrienne
I am up for this summer again if you are! Will check with Linda and maybe grab us a few more! Sarah
Hi Sarah! Yes – that would be great! Cannot wait!
Hugs,
Adrienne
Yes!!!!!! I’ve been hoping we were going to do another summer study!! I’ve loved the last two so much! And I’ve been aching to do the Ruth study! I’m so excited!!
I’m completely new to the area (Dallas/Ft Worth, TX) and don’t know anyone to invite to join me…will we be able to connect through the blog?
Can’t wait!!
Hi Anna Ruth!
I actually moved from Dallas to North Carolina almost 3 years ago. I know some wonderful women out there who might be interested in doing a Bible Study with you. Plus, you could make some new friends (they’re wonderful friends!).
Let me know if you would be interested!
Julie ๐
I’d love to connect with them!! Have they done the summer studies in the past?
My email is [email protected] – feel free to pass it along to them! No hard feelings if they’re not putting a group together this summer =)
Thanks Julie!
I live in the Dallas area (Plano – Tollway side, but I work in Addison) and would LOVE to organize a LUNCH meeting every two weeks. Let me know if you are interested. Also, if you just want to know more about fun Dallas places, email me too. I’ve lived here forever and I do think it is the best place EVER.
[email protected] is my email and just put Ruth Study in the subject line so I don’t miss it! Welcome to Dallas!
Thank you!! I’ve just sent you an email! =)
Any D/FW ladies who are wanting to put together a group, please email, and we’ll work something out! [email protected]
Hi Anna Ruth!! I’m very new to Dallas as of November last year. I don’t know if you had much success with getting a group started but I was wondering if I could maybe join the group as well? I’m so so so hungry for a bible study.
Please let me know,
Shawnie Fleming
Hi Shawnie!! Nothing’s been set up yet, but I’m still hoping to be able to participate with at least a small group! Email me at [email protected] and we’ll see what we can work out!! =)
Seeing if I can’t get my group together – so excited!
SOOOOO thrilled! I grew leaps and bounds last summer with the “Me, Myself and Lies” study and I’m pumped for this summer’s study too! Yay! Thanks for ministering in such a unique way to all of us Siestas. Love you gals!
Fantastic!
I’m so excited!!!!!! I can’t wait to get started. I know we’ll have a blast this summer. Thank so much.
Hugs,
Kim
Oh yes, what an awesome study!!! I’m thrilled to do it again, this time with a group.
Hi Yolanda,
Since you have done this study already – can you tell me if retired ladies might be interested in it?
Thanks!
Barb
I had just purchased this book to do on my own this summer….how cool is that. Can’t wait to now do it as part of Siesta Summer Bible Study III….loved last years’.
My friend and I did this study together over the winter during the break between our regular bible studies. This study of Ruth was fantastic! As leaders, you sometimes grow weary of pouring out and pouring out. We wanted something to pour back into us during the break, and this was it! It will be great to review it again!
YAY! Can’t wait to start it. This will be my first summer Siesta Bible study.
On a side note, Beth and Amanda, I had a random conversation about the two of you today. I had lunch with some seminary friends today. One of the guys, Dave Vailes, pipes in and says he went on a mission trip to India with you all. He said, “Yeah, Beth Moore was there and I had no clue who she was. We just called her Beth. Oh and her daughter started dating my best friend from SBU and they ended up getting married.” ๐
I am so excited, because I LOVE Bible Studies. Jennifer Rothschild is another favorite Christian that I really think the world of. She is such a beautiful person.
Ruth is one of my “all time favorite” love stories. I will probably go to Lifeway in OKC to see if they have the work-book and join in your study. Thank you for letting us share. I will do my best to keep up.
My church ladies will be studying the book of Esther by Beth in August or September. I am leading in this study also and I have completed that study myself, but still have to plan ahead, so we can discuss things as a group.
Summer is a busy time, isn’t it?
What a wonderful blessing! God bless you!
I literally just finished this study today. ๐ Ha ha! I don’t think I will completely go through it with you all but I will look at the blog and give my two cents if I have some ๐ I will be studying Acts over the summer.
I can’t think of two better women to hang out with all summer – Ruth of Bethlehem and Kelly of Nashville. It’s gonna be a great summer, Siestas!
I am looking forward to the study.
My sister and niece are just starting the No Other Gods, couldn’t decide which of her study to do, so just started with the first one. too bad, wish we were doing Ruth with you all.
I am so all over it! And so tremendously excited!!! There is nothing (NO-thing) like the pages of God’s Word! There’s no kind of thrill that compares to the voice that jumps off the pages into our hearts and minds and souls!! Tendering our hearts and changing not just our walks and our talks, but our attitudes! The way we feel for God, for ourselves, and for others!
Okay… can you tell I’m already drooling???!!!
I am already so seeped into scripture at the moment that I am basking in His pleasure (and sometimes His reprimands) daily. Yet still, I don’t just welcome more, dear friend, I CRAVE it!!! It is the thing I hunger and thirst for! It is Life! And it is what saves me! Oh Lord, I love Your word! If not for Your Word, I would have perished in my affliction!
Becuz we up here in Canada need to take advantage of the 3
warmest summer months , I am sure the Lord has given me this idea to collect a few girlfriends at the marina with use of a lap top of course. ! Oh the more I think and pray over it, the more I am lovin the idea!!! Today is our first warm day, like 73 , in a very long time – a lap top, a coffee in hand, the water, sailboats, and the Scriptures with Beth Moore passionately presenting!!! Couldn’t get better than this this side of Heaven !!! don;t you agree?!!
Cannot wait – I started this spring and was not able to finish with so much happening in life. VERY happy to have peeps to finish it with!
how fun! I have already done this study and LOVED it…can’t wait to hear what Beth adds through video and questions she brings out. since i completed the study a couple months ago, i may not do it again…but I love Ruth and look forward to hearing everyone’s insights!
Ladies, you are in for a treat! Our bible study group finishes this study tonight and it has been wonderful. I am excited to be joining the siestas and going through it again.
I’m so excited!!!!!
And I can finally get back on the blog….our thunderstorms here in OK have knocked out our internet service.
Can’t wait!
I’m so excited! I love Kelly Minter! I was going to do this Bible Study this summer anyway! I’m glad I don’t have to do it by myself!
I am so stinking excited!!! I think this may be the year instead of going solo, that I get a group together…
Am excited and wondering if there are any ladies in the Jenks/Tulsa OK area that are interested in getting a group together? Let me know!
Please email me at [email protected]. I work at the Port of Catoosa and could possibly do a lunch thing.
I AM ON THE LAST WEEK OF THIS STUDY RIGHT NOW!!!! It is AWESOME! I had a feeling you were going to choose this one! Oh shoot! Oh well I will still follow along with you guys.
Just bought the book. Looking forward to the study with the Siestas. I’ll be doing it solo here at home.
Count me in! I’m excited to study Ruth with you all.
I’ve been looking forward to your revealing the summer study! I’m listening to your Mom’s Kinsman Redeemer series on CD right now – so I’m extra excited about the Bible study choice! Can’t wait to get started.
I listened to that study last summer, and thoroughly enjoyed it!!!
I’m so excited we are doing this study!!! I loved NOG the first time around and am looking forward to Ruth!!! YAY!!!!!!!!
I was just this morning wondering about the summer Biuble study and what it would be this year! Thanks for answering my unasked question:-)
I’m so glad to see this post! I’ll get my book as soon as I see it–no Lifeway in College Station, but I’ll find one ASAP and will be ready to study! Tuesday nights have been really quiet for me since we completed David!! I’ve never studied Ruth so this will be great.
Yay Bobbie a B/CS person! Are you in a group or solo?
I’m solo [email protected] so we can become face to face Siesta’s! God is good. By the way, Scripture Haven in the mall’s owner goes to the Lifeway location frequently they can pick you up a copy, email me I can share until you get yours. ๐
I’m so very happy about this bc I didn’t get to finish it when I did it with another group. ๐ Yayyyyy for another chance!!!
Hi everyone-
I want to throw out an idea here. I just joined in on this blog after the “So Long Insecurity Simulcast” but I’ve been “under the heavy influence” of Beth’s teaching for many years!
For the past two summers, my friends and I have held what we call “Backyard Bible Study”. It runs from the end of June to the beginning of August on TUESDAY nights. We go to a different home every week and hold our study in the backyard! It has been a blast. We’ve been on decks, patios, screened porches and inside when it has rained.
Some hostess go all out–a fire in the outdoor fire pit, candles, etc..others do not. We always have a nice array of appetizers and snacks–fruit, veggies, cheese, crackers, CHOCOLATE etc..
It is a great way to get to know each other and share our homes…
After reading your post today Amanda, I hope to use our “Backyard Bible Study” for the Siesta Summer Study this year. I can’t wait to tell the others in my group! Fun!
Looking forward to sharing and learning with you all this summer.
Laura
That’s such a fun idea! I wish our climate was better for that!
oh I am SO stealing this idea!!! Our neighbor just recently installed a playset in her back yard and our daughter and her kids climb all over it every evening. Also we just installed four sky chairs on our porch and I’ve been wanting to invite our neighbor over to just sit, swing and chat.
What a perfect way to get to introduce the concept of Bible study to this woman who is becoming a dear friend. The men can watch the kids and grill while we girls sit on the porch and do the study.
Looking forward to a summer filled with smokey goodness and wonderful conversations with God, Beth, Kelly and friends.
Deirdre
Dear Dierdre-
YAY! It has been a great way for women to bring their friends, moms, daughters and neighbors. It’s very non-threatening in the backyard! We also have BYOC–“Bring your own chair”!
Please let me know if you do this–I’d love to hear how it goes for you–I’d like to pray for you and your ladies too! Where are you located in the U.S.?
My email is [email protected].
God Bless you-
Laura
I am so looking forward to this! The one we did last summer, “Me, Myself, & Lies”, was a powerful, powerful study for me in my career, in particular (teaching). I am finishing up THE best year in my 35 years, and I know that God used that study to help me recognize things in myself that He could change in me if I was made aware of them!
So, count me in this summer! Thanks, Amanda!
I am almost finished with the study of Esther that I have been doing on my own while recuperating from surgery and was wondering what I would do afterward. I am not acquainted with Kelly Minter but look forward to the study. Have a happy, healthy and blessed summer!!!
I to am going through Esther by myself. I just finished day 4 of week 5 and I learned so, so much! This was particularly eyeopening for me: If we focus entirely on Scripture’s disclosure of our feeble humaness, we’ll either loose heart or close the book. (I can so relate. Sadly I have closed the book more then once with a lost heart.) But what would God’s kingdom gain from a people who were only humiliated? What would be the reward of our experience if we were only repentant and never repaired? (Wow! This next part is where I am at, though it’s not an easy road) Discontent with selfishness and weary of ego, we finally become willing to lose ourselves to something greater. In doing so, we find Christ as we’ve never known Him and, pooled in the reflection of His eyes, startle to discover that a part of ourselves resembles Him. (I resemble Him? I Resemble Him! Praise the Lord God Almighty.)
Oh boy, can’t wait. I am not familar with this author. But I love the book of Ruth. I will also be studying solo.
Midland Kay
I am so excited!!!! Can’t wait.
Hi Life Way Team! I am new to reading this Blog but have recently set it as my homepage so enjoy seeing what’s newly posted! Thank you for the humor, real life stories, and evidence of God in every day life.
Great to hear of your summer Bible study. I just wanted to share how excited and blessed I feel (here in New Brunswick) as a friend at church and I decided we would do the Beth Moore Daniel study over the summer. We didn’t expect other ladies would be interested to do so over the summer, but my friend put it in our church bulletin and over a dozen ladies have signed up, including some women from outside of our church, have committed to studying the book of Daniel each Monday night.
Again, I am amazed how God draws people to Him and His Truth! Let’s keep on digging deeper into the Word!
I’ve already done that study, and it’s a good one. Enjoy!
I can’t wait too! There is a lot of change going on over here at my house and I am so thankful for some structure to keep me grounded!
Have a great trip!
Jina
Cool, sounds Great. I’ve been wanting to do that study, I totally enjoyed doing the study last summer on the blog, and the memory verses on the blog. It’s fun here.
Thanks y’all. ;0D
