Picture Overload

Right after Jackson was born, my dad gave me a really nice digital camera. It’s fast and it takes pretty pictures. With my limited photography skills, I’m unworthy of having such a great camera, but I love it. Scores of parents have learned the hard way that when you’re taking pictures of squirrely kids, slow digital cameras just don’t get the job done. You say “One, two, three, cheese!”, your kid flashes an over the top grin and squints his eyes, and then five more seconds pass before it takes the picture. By then your child is either picking his nose or running to the breakfast room to make another spit drawing on the glass table top. (Not that my child does those things.) The camera my dad gave me has been such a blessing. Melissa just got one for her birthday and I can’t wait to see what she does with it.

There are two drawbacks to my nice camera. One, it’s heavy and not very fun to lug around sometimes. It’s not one that you can just tuck away in your purse in case something cute or funny happens. Two, I miss out on some good picture taking opportunities because I refuse to take it near water or leave it in my pool bag while I play with the kids. If it gets damaged or lost, I can’t replace it.

Those are the times when Mom has my back. She always says, “Honey, take mine!” Hers is a little point and shoot camera. I took her up on the offer last weekend. When I uploaded the images onto my computer, all 256 pictures that she’s never done anything with came right along with the ones I’d taken.

You may be wondering why we had never done anything with these pictures. Well, the cord that connects the camera to the computer got lost long ago and, until a few days ago, Dumb and Dumber didn’t know you could just stick the photo card straight into the computer. (There I go using bad words from my thought closet!) I wasn’t going to share this detail, but Mom insisted I let you know that she didn’t even know how to review her pictures on her camera’s little screen. Bless her heart.

Your faithful Siesta Mama and Siesta Daughter thought you might like to see a sample of the smorgasbord of pictures from the last year and a half. It’s never too late to share, right?

Here’s the back of Melissa’s head when she was doing a wedding hair and makeup trial run.

There’s a story to this but I don’t remember what it was. That was before the puppies came and obliterated the back yard. (Mom just reminded me that this was when Dad asked her if she had gotten a new makeup smock. He had no idea she was going to wear this to work.)

Here’s my dad with his two-year-old cowboy. This was the day we took Jackson to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo for the first time.

I had to include this one because of Sunny.

The miniature Wranglers were just too much.

We ran into one of my best friends, Kay, and her little boy.

We’ll try that one again.

We had a lot of fun watching the baby goats. They’re so naughty.

A carnival ride.

Bibby and Jackson on the carousel.

Mom spending a few minutes in the correspondence office at LPM. The person who sent her those slippers must have just done Daniel.

Starley McFarley as a wee pup!

Bad Dog Geli laying on the furniture. Nowadays she jumps on tables. She’s very goat-like.

A deer feeder at the ranch. There were a ton of beautiful pictures from there, but I think we’ll do a separate post for them.

A view of the sunset from the ranch.

This is a statue of St. Francis of Assisi. Mom took this when Jackson stared at it and said, “Bibby, birds love Jesus.”

Here’s my family on a carriage ride last December. I was sweating in that track suit with my hot chocolate. That’s Houston for you.

Absolutely no idea.

Bibby and Jackson playing some air hockey at our church.

Jackson was making a Popeye face.

You may not know that the Chick-fil-a cow recently visited LPM.

Mom loves Chick-fil-a.

This was my mom’s birthday lunch at P.F. Chang’s. Praise the Lord.

Star on her way to work. Part of me thinks she should be in a 5-point harness.

This is what happened when Mom snubbed the perfectly good milk that had technically reached its expiration date. Dad was terribly offended.

The milk carton says, “For Keith Only” and the drawing is supposed to be a skull and crossbones. Welcome to the family freak show.

Amanda, thank you for sharing the family pictures. Please tell Siesta Momma that she and my husband have an "expiration date" fetish…he won't touch it after the date…milk is PERFECTLY good at LEAST 3-5 days after it expires…I'm with you, Keith…LOL!!

My mom got a new camera- she left our place after 10 days with over 700 pictures…60 of which were taken before she got here: "I thought I'd remember what state we were flying over." Bless her heart.

    Loved all of these!!

Full confession — I am at work at the moment and having a …well …less than desireable day… and logged onto the LPM blog for a bit of a "pick me up"… laugh out loud… have laughed out loud in my office… Keith's skull and cross bones takes the cake… My mom and dad had similar arrangements when they became empty nesters and Dad got cross with the amount of food mom was tempted to throw out… He was really getting the upper hand in his self-righteousness, until he accidentally took the dog pills instead of his own a couple of weeks ago! ๐Ÿ™‚

Blessings on you guys — and THANK you for bringing some much needed laughs to a random HR department in Washington today!

I too must belong to the Dumb and Dumber group; I did not know that your memory card could be put directly into my computer. Thanks for the tip! That's what I love about this blog; you guys have it all – Jesus and computer lessons – what more could you want?

By the By, 2 of my children work at Chick- fil- A in cool springs TN (Brentwood) Sometimes my son gets to be the cow.
I've always loved chick-fil-a even before my kids were old enough to work there. Hey ya'll try the soup…it's really good.

I so totally agree with that expiration date on the milk….throw it out.

    Thanks again for the fun.

I, too, am thankful you shared the pictures. I recently discovered my own mother had thrown away the memory card for her little point-and-click because she "didnt like the photos that were on it"… Gotta love mothers. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Loved the statue and what Jackson said. As I was looking at these pics I was thinking, Jackson has no idea who Bibby really is and how many lives she has affected for Kingdom gain…what a legacy your family is going to leave for your children. Beth…Jackson will say "Bibby was all about God." (yes…I'm doing the Jesus the One and Only study)

Laughed OUT LOUD! Your comments made them even more fun – I need those Lion slippers – we're doing the Fruit of the Spirit study, we just listened to the msg on Faithfulness, and LOVED how Beth linked it to Daniel shutting the mouth of Lions, and 1 Peter 5:8, Devil walks about like a roaring lion seeking whom he (may) devour (means we give him permission – arrrtgg!). Faith FIGHTS!

Please pass on what an amazing blessing this study has been this summer!

PS – my mom had a DRAWER full of undeveloped film, by the time she took it in, the pics were unable to be saved – so thank goodness for digital

I have to tell you that I was going down the blog entry with the "page down" button, and the way the screen landed on the picture of Miss Beth at the desk, all I could see was her lovely, classy self. To get a clearer idea of the whole picture, I scrolled down a bit, and those giant lion slippers jumped out at me and I laughed so hard. Too funny!

I can so relate to just about everything you said about the camera, especially the frustrating 5 second delay between shots. I've missed so many cute photos of my grandbabies!! Those are too great!

I'm glad to know my husband's not the only one who insists on drinking/eating things past the expiration date.

I remember back in the film-camera days, coming across an old undeveloped roll was a fun mystery. It's kind of like finding a forgotten $5 bill in the pocket of old jeans…but better.

    Thanks for sharing!

    Johnnie says:

Thank you, Amanda, for sharing those great pics! They lifted my spirits. My son has an "expiration date" phobia. We have a 3 drawer rolling cart filled with snacks in the pantry. When he comes home from college to visit I've caught him secretly checking dates to make sure he's not eating something out of date. Hubby and I are not so particular I don't know where he got that gene! LOL I give expired stuff the smell and taste test — if it passes, hey, it's fair game.

Laughing my head off. Well, there you go, Siestas! A little peak into the Family Freak Show as Melissa has affectionately called us for years.

In answer to a few questions:
I am devastated that you northern Siestas don't have Chick-Fil-A! It is the best thing that EVER happened to fast food. Greatest chicken sandwich on the planet and ice cream that tastes really close to homemade. Furthermore, the Cathy Family who founded it and are still its biggest fans love Jesus like there's no tomorrow. Can't beat that.

Secondly, YES, Star comes with me to LPM every work day except on rarest occasion when I have an appointment on the way that would cause her to have to stay in a hot car and wait. Impossible in a Houston summer. She is the ministry mascot. And I'm obsessed with her…and she's obsessed with me.

    Y'all are so fun!
