Ramblings From The RV

Greetings from the road, my dear Siestas! Well, to say that Keith Moore and I are having an adventure is our official understatement of the year. If you watched the SSBS wrap up (Tuesday’s post), you know that Keith and I have done something highly uncharacteristic: pulled out of our driveway in a large rented RV and hit the road with little more than an atlas and two rather sizable hounds.

My coworker, Sabrina, was going over my August calendar with me about a month ago and said, “You have a week of vacation coming up and you should take it. Beth, the rest of us take actual vacations. Some of us even take three weeks a year. Where could I make you and Keith some reservations?”

So I began to think and think and talk it over with my man. Ever since my surgery, I just haven’t been able to work my physical body into the ground like I used to. To tell you the truth, that’s a gift from God. He probably never meant for us to work as hard as I have worked in the last twenty years. This time, I knew I wanted real time off. But where? Keith’s spiritual gift is giving so I knew he’d give me any kind of vacation I wanted but there’s one little factor that grossly limits our choices: we want our two little buddies with us.

That’s when this wild idea hit us. My man has been trying to get me to do this RV thing for years but I couldn’t quite picture, for instance, washing and drying my big hair in it. Believe it or not, that was one of my lesser worries. My greater worries are not suitable for public conversation but as you can clearly conclude, I decided to try my best to overcome personal obstacles. Novices that we are, we’ve had moments of questioning our sanity (like, for instance, at night when we can’t actually sleep in it) but, overall (during daylight hours), we are having a blast! Keith will not let me drive but I am the world’s best map-reader and a sight-seeing enthusiast so we make a great pair.

I will just give you a few highlights (or low lights depending on how much you appreciate trivia) because I can’t stay on here very long. I’m only getting this opportunity because Keith hardly slept all night and has now finally fallen asleep and snoring loud enough, God love him, to rock the entire RV. I may need to take some Dramamine. (Did I spell that right?? Spell check is letting it pass but, for the life of me, I have never noticed the “drama” in Dramamine before. That I have not overdosed on it is a wonder.) Geli and Star are also staring a hole through me like, “Is this what we came here to do? Seriously? Just sit here in the RV? Do you know what kind of good smells there are out there right now??”

We drove over 10 hours on the very first day from Houston to Caprock Canyon State Park in north Texas. At half past midnight, we backed the RV into a space that, lo and behold, had a broken electrical outlet but we didn’t realize that was the problem. We thought either our RV was malfunctioning or, more likely, we were inept. We blessed the other campers by sleeping (all 4 hours) with the generator going. But when we were able to drink enough coffee to peel our eyelids off our eyeballs, these were a few of the scenes around us:

Can you believe that’s in TEXAS??? Absolutely breathtaking. We loved it so much. Then, yesterday we got back on the road and spent all day spying gorgeous countryside on our way out of the Lone Star State and into New Mexico. Geli and Star were in dog heaven. They love traveling this way and, as I tweeted yesterday, they suggested we buy this thing when we get home and drive around Houston in it. Finally, we understand their needs, they said. This was the scene behind us much of the day:

It’s a wonderful thing to have an I-phone on a road trip. At all times I can find the nearest Starbucks. I can also find charming restaurants. This was one of them yesterday.

Keith got a big old plate of beef enchiladas, New Mexico style, with red chili gravy that made your eyes water. I had a hamburger steak because Kimberly, our darling young waitress, said it was good. I had a hard time overlooking the sandwiches because the menu said all of them were made with homemade bread but I’d had enough sandwiches in the RV to let that dream go. As God would bless me, my hamburger steak came with a side of “Texas Toast” (thank you again, Texas!) that was, you guessed it, made out of HOMEMADE BREAD. It was two inches thick and grilled on both sides in butter. I could bawl about it but, of course, I’ve had only about six hours of sleep in two days. I’m telling you it was the Texas toast of my life right there in New Mexico. As we paid out, our waitress said, “Ma’am, can I ask you a question. Is there any chance your name is Beth?” Turns out her Daddy is the pastor of the First Baptist Church in that town. It was a delightful encounter and we thanked God for it.

We made it to our second destination about 9:00 PM last night and will be here one more night. ย I have on a jacket and I nearly froze to death last night. All my Houston home-girls hate me right this minute.

I’ll catch back up with you in the next day or two but I’ll leave you with the most surreal sight of the trip thus far. We purposely chose the scenic highways that looked like long ropes through ranch lands as broad as tongue could tell. Texas, New Mexico, and Colorado are all famous for those. We saw beautiful horses and tons of cattle and that was just in Texas. Once we crossed the first border, we hit New Mexico where the deer and the antelope play. And seldom is heard a discouraging word and the skies are not cloudy all day. Home, home on the… Sorry, Siestas. I’m just overtired. To get back to my story, before we left Texas, we passed by a typical wide-open pasture with horses frolicking and manes flowing in the wind. Nothing unusual about that except that these were all miniature horses. The kind that would stand about as tall as my waist. No, not Shetlands. Miniatures. Like stuffed animals. In herds. I have never seen anything like it. We weren’t at a place where we could pull of the road with our big Daddy or I would have taken you a picture. It was the weirdest thing you’ve ever seen because everything else about the scene was absolutely normal. It was like the horses didn’t even know they were supposed to be taller than three feet. Suddenly, I pictured a remake of The Wizard of Oz set in Texas instead of Kansas. Pitch those red slippers, my little pretty! Put on some hot pink ropers and follow that yellow brick road, Girlfriend. You’re about to have the ride of your life.

These are the things that amuse me.

I’ve enjoyed saying hi to you, Siestas! My man just got up and, from the look of things, I better put on another pot of coffee. We love you. More than anything, we love loving Jesus with you. I am asking Him to refresh our souls and grant us some sweet revelation while we’re on this trip. I pray the same for you, Darling Things, whatever you may be doing right now. He can meet with us as easily while we fold clothes and wash dishes. It’s all about whether or not we ask Him for eyes to see.

I’ll talk to you soon!

I just started subscribing to your blog. I love you Mrs. Beth. I think I have a similar heart for woman like you do. Nevertheless, I love that you spelled iPhone I-Phone ; ) Enjoy your trip. Although fixing your hair in the RV is more difficult you can’t argue with the lack of humidity as you travel West. I currently live in Atlanta, but grew up in Houston.

    Dearest Beth,

I am so happy that you are getting away with your man. My husband and I have always talked about renting an RV and doing just what you and Keith are doing. It is so good to read your posts….maybe some day we can do the same.

  3. 153

Oh yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay! How wonderful for you to be on a vacation! I pray that you are able to relax and rest in that RV and that you find wonder around each bend!

Enjoy one another and those sweet buddies!

That was great, and the dogs staring out the window put such a smile on my face :o)
Thank you for sharing and I look forward to hearing more of your adventures. Go in Gods safety.

RVing is the best way to see the country! We love it. We started out in a tent, moved up to a big old camper on our truck when our daughter was 8 months old! From there we moved up to an 18′ trailer when our son was born, then a 24′ trailer, than a 26′ class “C” motorhome, then a 36′ class “C” motorhome, and now we have a 40’class “A” diesel pusher9the big Daddy and my husband loves it! Kids are grown, both married with wee ones (3 grandbabies total, so far!)My husband retires after a 35+ yr career with the fire service and we plan to RV across America and Canada!! So I agree–you should buy it when you get home–great way to relax and regroup too!!

I join the other ladies in thanking you for sharing your vacation with us. My husband had an accident this summer which he recovered from, but we just decided we’d better not go on vacation after that. I teach school, and will start back in a week. It is fun and exciting to me to get to see the places and here funny “on the road” stories. It’s like I get to go on a mini vacation myself right before I start the school year again. Also, I love vacations because you get to here from God in the midst of the beauty of His creation. For example, breathtaking mountains, watching dolphins swim in the early morning ocean waters. It’s like He says “Come away for awhile, child, and see the bigger picture.” Enjoy every minute of it!

    Siesta Mama,
Good for you that you are enjoying a well deserved vacation!! I had to laugh at the picture of Geli and Star – and thought to myself would this be the doggie version of Keith and Beth? There’s Geli (Keith) just serenely sitting there taking it all in and there’s Star(Beth) with the giddy with joy look on her face as she tries to take in all the beauty around her? Please correct me if I ‘m wrong… Hope you lovable 4 have a safe and wonderful vacation. Much Love, Marylee

I love it when you say things like we drank enough coffee to peel our eyelids of our eyeballs, I mean who says that? My sweet siesta mama and by the way I bet those stuffed animal horses would come to my knees. Tell Keith I need a visual. Please be careful out there and hurry up to Kentucky! I love you you darling thang!!

    Kathy says:

You are the best Siesta! Sharing that beautiful country with us and a bit of your personal delight on the road with your man.

I pray for you to have loads of fun and connection time with the love of your life.

I’m passing out Rev. Evans and your teaching cds from the Dallas retreat like candy- so many of my close “old girl” friends are desparate for that message- the storms are hitting from all sides-

I still can’t get over some of the unexpected “words” God seemed to stream right through you to me. I had decided that I misunderstood God though some of my private times in the word. I almost removed my “Blessed is she who believed what the Lord has said to her will be accomplished” from my bullentin board- and several other verses that have been my “life lines” during my new hurricane season these past 14 years- My My My-

Wish you could meet all the Austin gals hitting the roads to Houston, Dallas and beyond with your CD studies ready to play to receive inspiration and hope as they travel to take care of ill family members, grandchildren, sometimes for their own health issues and other obligations at this point in life.

Sleep well- I’m praying for your strength, rest, any physcial aches and pains to subside and just lots of fun, food and love with those precious animals and Keith. In Christ’s great love-

PS The greatest gift you given many us, is our witness to the fruits of your personal journey including your wonderful family. As Anthony de Mello wrote:”A good teacher offers practice; not theories” He explains “you can know a good teacher just as the farmer knows good cultivation” Your GOOD cultivation at LPM produces divine fruit and I know the harvest is amazing.

When I have the privilege to attend one of your conferences or one of your studies, I witness a FRESH move of the lord each time. You and your team must pray over those spaces and participants with open hearts streaming our Lord’s river of grace to each of us. Sorry I’m off on a tear, I’m thrilled to be reintroduced to your ministry after first hearing you at Hyde Park Baptist in Austin decades ago- You were DARLING, but not the same person I encountered at the women’s conference in Houston decades later-My Houston friends told me I just had to attend- I think one of the Graham daughters spoke also

God Bless You and your loved ones. May you be blessed with plenty of private time to refresh, relax and put your feet up with Keith and Jesus himself. I bet your outdoors man is elated to be exploring with those precious dogs seeing what “dog heaven” may just be about- we shared in the loss of a fabulous yellow lad (Rig) named for my son’s truck. His adopted family provided a full funeral at the ranch where Rig swam, ran and caught all kind of critters to eat-I’ve cryed for days over the loss of that joyous dog. Again sorry this is so long. I’m just really appreciating what you do for the thousands of ladies you teach and minister to – your brilliance, humble spirit, honesty and down right fun have graced our lives and allow us to move on with our personal “ministries” with greater balance, health and encouragement- your ministry pushes us forward like a flowing river back into our own lives to “practice” our personal relationship with Christ. This is toooooo long..
God Bless, Have Fun and allow the Lord to refuel you dear Sister in Christ- Buenos Noches

First of all, I want you to know that I have not been having an easy time with the LPM blog. Some days it takes it 15 minutes to load so I can read it and then it will take even longer when I want to leave a comment. I don’t tell you this to complain…nope. I just want to make sure you know that I’m still with ya. I still love ya. I still love Jesus. And just because you haven’t seen my name doesn’t mean I didn’t have something to say. But I know you have been reading all the posts and thinking “I wonder if moosemama is ok, cuz we haven’t seen her little face on here for a bit”. Yep, I KNOW you worry about us. So I’m fine ๐Ÿ™‚

And how fun is your little trip!!! I have wanted to do this for YEARS. Next year might just be the year we DO IT! I hope you are making memories to last you a lifetime..that you are refreshed and that you buy lots of ridiculous little souvenirs that make you smile when you remember where you got em and what took you to them…your rented RV!!

God’s richest blessings for both of you. Love you muchly!

Beth, thanks for sharing your adventures with us! I am very happily jealous for you that 1) you are traveling in an RV and 2) to New MX!!! I am 30 but so wish one day we can go driving around in an RV! We visited Taos a few years ago and that town still haunts my memory like a lost love! The landscape in New MX is truly enchanting!

LOL Beth A few years ago I read one of your books and you started out with the saga of traveling via pet-friendly motels to Wyoming, I believe. I thought then, I should write her and tell her HOW fun RV travel is (either motorhome or trailer) and so convenient with pets. Everything else works itself out or it wasn’t THAT important anyhow. Enjoy and thanks for sharing yor travelogue with us. Happy trails to you, Keith and the dogs!

  16. 166

You crack me up Beth! What an adventure. I am busting to do the same with my family. Hubby and 4 kids. Hopefully Australia and then one day Europe. No doubt we will have some funny tales too. Enjoy the moment, you’ll be laughing your head of in days and months to come when you think about this experience. Heaps of fun and blessings to you both. I sure hope that one day I can be in a cafe and wait on Beth Moore…..I’d probably be a blubbering mess, but would love to serve YOU!!!!

    Hi Beth,

It is so neat that you were at Caprock Canyon. I live at Ceta Canyon which is a church camp about 45 minutes to the north of there close to Wayside. This area is so beautiful here and I love it. Here at camp we actually have a waterfall which was so unbelievable to me when I heard about it. I never knew there could be a waterfall in this area of Texas. ๐Ÿ™‚ I just thought it was so neat that you were in this area and thought I would drop a comment. I hope that you have a wonderful vacation.

I have no idea what I’m doin and it doesn’t even make sense…but I know Gods plans are greater than mine. can I get an amen??

How sweet it is to spend some “alone” time, just the two of you (or should I say four), some quiet time, where you can lay together in each other’s arm, looking up at the bright, starry sky, and beholding the breath-taking sights our Awesome God created! You didn’t mention the sunrises and sunsets. I bet they are spectacular! Definitely worth the trip! Snuggle up to each other, Beth, and thank the Lord for this amazing man you are married to. Keith is a dream! I know that he thinks of you that way, too. To spend this quality time alone with each other is a true gift from the Lord. Not many married couples get to do this. It is something you will cherish for many, many years to come. Don’t worry or fret about people, or anything else along this journey, this trip is all about you and Keith and re-connecting a beautiful relationship that has always been meant to be. The seeds were planted long ago, fertilized, grown, and now blossoming into the most beautiful love-flower produced by God.

    Blessings,

Oh my goodness! I love it! We have a pull behind camper and love it. Although I was nervous the first time out in it and somewhere in Virginia, yes we traveled all the way from NH to Virginia to buy this thing, sight unseen, mind you ( and then made our way to Forida, yikes) and we were so blessed at the gift God has given us. 31. 181

I wondered if you would tell us whether anyone recognized you while you’re out and about on your vacation!

Last September I had the opportunity to go with my sweet husband on a business trip to Houston. On our way to supper one night I told him that while he was in his meeting I had found out where “Beth Moore’s church” was and that I would like to drive by it please so that I could take a picture. Maybe I will get a chance to see her. Of course he looked at me like I was crazy (haha). So anyway I took the picture. And posted it on my facebook album of my Houston travels lol.

I would love to have the opportunity to meet you, but if that never happens this side of heaven, well…I will see you on the other side!

I thank God for pulling our hearts together through your bible studies! And I thank you for giving of yourself the way you do!

    Love and Blessings,

I saw this new entry on the blog last night, but wouldn’t even let myself read it until I finished our SSBS comments. Like so many of us siestas, I’ve been praying for y’all’s travels and wondering where you wandered to.

Thank the Lord you actually found somewhere cool. I’d begun to believe that was only a figment of my imagination, a fleeting memory as if in a dream, a mirage teasing my heat-affected brain. OK, ok, I’m ramblin’. It seemed fittin’ after my roundtrip-in-a-day to Memphis–officially the second hottest place in the country. I’m not making it up: it’s what the weather channeled blamed on “heat indexes”.

There are so many things I love about you, Siesta Mama, but I have a new silly favorite: your adoration for your furry family. I think the best piece of info from the CT article was that you keep your puppy with you when you write. That’s just endearing! And now you even choose vaca plans around them. Completely darling. As I type this, my Heidi pup is curled in my lap. She sends her regards to Geli and Star. I think I know what they were saying in your photo: “Squirrel!”

This has got to be a trip of memories. My husband and I loaded up daughter’s old volkswagon, threw in a small tent and some sleeping bags, went off down the road like a couple of “leftover hippies”….it was so much fun. Stayed in campground at Montrose Colorado, beautiful view of the mountains, wonderful gazebo and NO TV!!! Yea!!! It was a special weekend for us (except we did not realize when we pitched our tent that evening we were next to pasture with a donkey, what an alarm clock we had the next morning,,,,right at the tent door) We still laugh some 25 years later….
I’ll be on the lookout for an RV with some great pooches!!!

Okay, this is so funny! Yesterday or maybe it was Wednesday, I was heading down Hwy. 114 towards Grapevine, TX and noticed a big white and green RV in front of me. I thought wouldn’t it be a hoot if that’s Beth & Keith! So I pulled around that big thing and tried to take a look inside with one eye while keeping the other one on the road!!! ๐Ÿ™‚ Couldn’t tell who was in there, but a man was driving. I got to my exit and pulled off to get on the access road…took another look…and somebody peeked out from under the passengers seat window shade and stared back at me!! I was so embarrassed!! I laughed all the way to my appointment thinking whoever was in that RV thought I was some kind of nut!! Hopefully it wasn’t anyone that knew me!!!
Have a great road trip. We head out tomorrow for Colorado with family and my two wonderful grandsons! Bless you all!

I am so glad you are taking a vacation. I know you will probably never read this. I have so often wanted to talk to you. I feel like I know you. I recently met you in Peachtree City Georgia where you were signing your new book. It may be my all time favorite, and I have done all but 2 of your bible studies. I am 32 years old. I could really use your advice right now. I guess you get that a lot. I am so glad you are on your trip, and I am praying for true rest. I pray for you all the time. Which is probably why I feel like I know you. My favorite thing about leading so many of your bible studies is that my four year old daughter plays “bible study” just like Mommy. Thank you for letting God use you.

I just have to tell you–we have a group of about 12 ladies studying Daniel with you. We’re finishing up Week 6 and we are already CHANGED. We love you so much, we love the book of Daniel and most of all we love God. Thank you so much for this study.

On a side note: A couple of years ago, I found a “Breaking Free” workbook in a laundromat of an RV park in Kemah, TX. My husband was working at BP in Texas City, living in our Fifth Wheel. The workbook had not been written in, and I cherish this little treasure I found in the most unusual place!

Mamma Beth, thank you for sharing this. I needed the laugh. A family from our Faith family lost one of their sons in an accident on I44 (involving a diesel, a truck (the young man was in the truck) and two school buses yesterday. He knew Jesus, so we know the hope we have, but still… there are hard days ahead.

I love the picture of the dogs! Priceless!

I also wanted to tell you we had lunch with Bob, Joy, & family a few weeks ago and enjoyed hearing the “India Stool” story first hand. Grin. What an ornery thing to do.
I’ve decided our daughter needs to have an arranged marriage to one of their sons. LOL. We also enjoyed hearing a bit about Amanda and badly want to meet Joy’s dad now. Have you gotten to see him telling the gospel?
Our son Tyler is interning at First Baptist Arnold under Bob C and Gerald Davidson. What a blessing they are!

Anyway, have fun and stay safe. Keep glorifying our Lord-you do that so well! Love, Anna

I stopped for a moment from errands, laundry and packing for our upcoming family vacation to see what was going on in your world and received some much needed revelation for my soul. I have been so stressed trying to get ready for this trip, which could be one of our last family vacations since my girls are almost grown, that I had totally lost my joy. Thank you for reminding me what these trips are all about. Even in the middle of finding temporary homes for all of our animals, getting my elderly mother packed in enough supplies to survive a nuclear war and having everything ready to start school the day after we return, there should be joy, laughter and good memories. God spoke through you this morning, once again.

I was born in New Mexico and love seeing the antelope play! My late grandpa used to love hunting those antelope called oryx. My grandma can make some great enchiladas with oryx. Hope you guys have a wonderful trip.

Beth, I so love your ramblings. I’m a fellow rambler myself. Love to share ALL the details and am a long-winded writer! I tried talking my husband into doing a never-done-before RV vacation earlier this summer with my sister and BFs – imagine 5 young adults + one 4 year old in an RV for a week…he declined/vetoed. We took a plane somewhere else instead. Ha! A few more days and you’ll probably sleep through anything. Love you!

What a hoot! I’ll bet when you are done you will wish you could do it again. We lived in a large RV for 1-1/2 years….and it takes some re-programming of the old gray matter I’ll admit. But it is an irreplaceable memory and has so many positive aspects…we had our 4 cats with us……and put a trap door in the floor down to a litter box and their food in one of the stow-away-sections down below. It was a wonderful and great solution to a smelly potential! ha

Have fun (and I mean the doggies too!)
