Ramblings From The RV

Greetings from the road, my dear Siestas! Well, to say that Keith Moore and I are having an adventure is our official understatement of the year. If you watched the SSBS wrap up (Tuesday’s post), you know that Keith and I have done something highly uncharacteristic: pulled out of our driveway in a large rented RV and hit the road with little more than an atlas and two rather sizable hounds.

My coworker, Sabrina, was going over my August calendar with me about a month ago and said, “You have a week of vacation coming up and you should take it. Beth, the rest of us take actual vacations. Some of us even take three weeks a year. Where could I make you and Keith some reservations?”

So I began to think and think and talk it over with my man. Ever since my surgery, I just haven’t been able to work my physical body into the ground like I used to. To tell you the truth, that’s a gift from God. He probably never meant for us to work as hard as I have worked in the last twenty years. This time, I knew I wanted real time off. But where? Keith’s spiritual gift is giving so I knew he’d give me any kind of vacation I wanted but there’s one little factor that grossly limits our choices: we want our two little buddies with us.

That’s when this wild idea hit us. My man has been trying to get me to do this RV thing for years but I couldn’t quite picture, for instance, washing and drying my big hair in it. Believe it or not, that was one of my lesser worries. My greater worries are not suitable for public conversation but as you can clearly conclude, I decided to try my best to overcome personal obstacles. Novices that we are, we’ve had moments of questioning our sanity (like, for instance, at night when we can’t actually sleep in it) but, overall (during daylight hours), we are having a blast! Keith will not let me drive but I am the world’s best map-reader and a sight-seeing enthusiast so we make a great pair.

I will just give you a few highlights (or low lights depending on how much you appreciate trivia) because I can’t stay on here very long. I’m only getting this opportunity because Keith hardly slept all night and has now finally fallen asleep and snoring loud enough, God love him, to rock the entire RV. I may need to take some Dramamine. (Did I spell that right?? Spell check is letting it pass but, for the life of me, I have never noticed the “drama” in Dramamine before. That I have not overdosed on it is a wonder.) Geli and Star are also staring a hole through me like, “Is this what we came here to do? Seriously? Just sit here in the RV? Do you know what kind of good smells there are out there right now??”

We drove over 10 hours on the very first day from Houston to Caprock Canyon State Park in north Texas. At half past midnight, we backed the RV into a space that, lo and behold, had a broken electrical outlet but we didn’t realize that was the problem. We thought either our RV was malfunctioning or, more likely, we were inept. We blessed the other campers by sleeping (all 4 hours) with the generator going. But when we were able to drink enough coffee to peel our eyelids off our eyeballs, these were a few of the scenes around us:

Can you believe that’s in TEXAS??? Absolutely breathtaking. We loved it so much. Then, yesterday we got back on the road and spent all day spying gorgeous countryside on our way out of the Lone Star State and into New Mexico. Geli and Star were in dog heaven. They love traveling this way and, as I tweeted yesterday, they suggested we buy this thing when we get home and drive around Houston in it. Finally, we understand their needs, they said. This was the scene behind us much of the day:

It’s a wonderful thing to have an I-phone on a road trip. At all times I can find the nearest Starbucks. I can also find charming restaurants. This was one of them yesterday.

Keith got a big old plate of beef enchiladas, New Mexico style, with red chili gravy that made your eyes water. I had a hamburger steak because Kimberly, our darling young waitress, said it was good. I had a hard time overlooking the sandwiches because the menu said all of them were made with homemade bread but I’d had enough sandwiches in the RV to let that dream go. As God would bless me, my hamburger steak came with a side of “Texas Toast” (thank you again, Texas!) that was, you guessed it, made out of HOMEMADE BREAD. It was two inches thick and grilled on both sides in butter. I could bawl about it but, of course, I’ve had only about six hours of sleep in two days. I’m telling you it was the Texas toast of my life right there in New Mexico. As we paid out, our waitress said, “Ma’am, can I ask you a question. Is there any chance your name is Beth?” Turns out her Daddy is the pastor of the First Baptist Church in that town. It was a delightful encounter and we thanked God for it.

We made it to our second destination about 9:00 PM last night and will be here one more night. Β I have on a jacket and I nearly froze to death last night. All my Houston home-girls hate me right this minute.

I’ll catch back up with you in the next day or two but I’ll leave you with the most surreal sight of the trip thus far. We purposely chose the scenic highways that looked like long ropes through ranch lands as broad as tongue could tell. Texas, New Mexico, and Colorado are all famous for those. We saw beautiful horses and tons of cattle and that was just in Texas. Once we crossed the first border, we hit New Mexico where the deer and the antelope play. And seldom is heard a discouraging word and the skies are not cloudy all day. Home, home on the… Sorry, Siestas. I’m just overtired. To get back to my story, before we left Texas, we passed by a typical wide-open pasture with horses frolicking and manes flowing in the wind. Nothing unusual about that except that these were all miniature horses. The kind that would stand about as tall as my waist. No, not Shetlands. Miniatures. Like stuffed animals. In herds. I have never seen anything like it. We weren’t at a place where we could pull of the road with our big Daddy or I would have taken you a picture. It was the weirdest thing you’ve ever seen because everything else about the scene was absolutely normal. It was like the horses didn’t even know they were supposed to be taller than three feet. Suddenly, I pictured a remake of The Wizard of Oz set in Texas instead of Kansas. Pitch those red slippers, my little pretty! Put on some hot pink ropers and follow that yellow brick road, Girlfriend. You’re about to have the ride of your life.

These are the things that amuse me.

I’ve enjoyed saying hi to you, Siestas! My man just got up and, from the look of things, I better put on another pot of coffee. We love you. More than anything, we love loving Jesus with you. I am asking Him to refresh our souls and grant us some sweet revelation while we’re on this trip. I pray the same for you, Darling Things, whatever you may be doing right now. He can meet with us as easily while we fold clothes and wash dishes. It’s all about whether or not we ask Him for eyes to see.

I’ll talk to you soon!

It must be the summer for the camping thing. My husband of almost 26 years, and I went camping TENT camping for the first time just last weekend and we LOVED it! Cannot believe it but we did. Our idea of camping was a cabin, must have hot showers and flushing toilets and guess what? Our campground had flushing toilets with hot and cold running water and hot (private)showers! It was an honest to goodness campground too. It even rained on us the first night and although we got very little sleep I can tell you that me and the man are still married and the best thing is…..we want to do it again with the kids! Call me crazy but I have found a new love. It might have also helped that the couple we camped with (seasoned tent campers) brought along a refrigerator, microwave and a toaster….true they did. I think we will really rough it the next time and maybe even go without electricity. The kids think we are having a mid-life crisis but sleeping right out in God’s creation with only the tiniest bit of material between us and the world was great. Enjoy your time in the RV with your man and your pups and send more resturant finds!!!!

    Hi Beth!

This is the first time I have seen your blog — love it! I was Google’ing “So Long Insecurity” for a friend and ran across the site, which lead me to your blog. Just a quick note to tell you I have just completed “Get Out of the Pit” and am now reading “So Long Insecurity.” WOW…. love your God given words of wisdom & insight (as always)! I have been really struggling and these books are just what I need & what God ordered!

Enjoy your vacation and have a blessed time with your man and your two buddies! Please know that you have touched, and continue to touch, the lives of many throughout your years of hard work & service! Thank you for being so obedient and doing what God has called you to do! Many blessings & love!

PS, I plan on & look forward to attending the Fall Forward worship series this fall — I used to attend the studies @ FBH, but life … well, life got busy!

What a great vacation idea! Will pray for sleep for you so it can be good all around πŸ™‚

PS My mom has owned some of the mini horses – they use them to pull little two person carts. My daugthers LOVE them πŸ™‚ What’s really fun is watching the mini horses mingle with my mom’s draft-horse-size mules!

If you’re in the Royal Gorge area take a mule-back ride – my mom just started give tours by mule….;)

You will love the RV. We left Dallas with our four kids in an RV 3 years ago and drove all the way to Boca Raton, FL to see their great grand parents. I, too, had the same reservations as you, but it was truly one of the best things we ever did as a family. They want to do it again all the way to Yellowstone. Have fun. Be safe.
P.S. There is a great hotel in Eklund, NM call the Eklund Hotel that is an old saloon. You can grab a bite there-great for the atmosphere.

Have a great time! I saw Melissa’s comment where she said your bed is as hard as a rock. When we’ve experienced that before, we’ve pulled the mattress off and put it on the floor. See if that helps. I’ll pray you get some fitful sleep and if you decide to enter Colorado, you won’t be disappointed. Southern Colorado is a gorgeous place!

Give the doggies a big hug from all of us. My husband has wanted another dog since the last one died two years ago. Seeing how much fun yours are having in the back of the RV makes me want to go out and get him one!

Caprock Canyon is close to my family place!! It is in Briscoe county and there are towns called Quitaque, Silverton,Claredon, and Turkey all around that area. I love the name Turkey, Texas.

My husband and I love road trips, but no camping. We will ride the range, but need a motel/ hotel at night. When we first married, we realized that we were not gifted in the home improvement or camping areas.

Our first home improvement effort looked like the the 3 Stooges had had a fight. The camping fiasco was much the same. Lack of sleep, sweating, and burned biscuits make for a lousy trip.

  13. 63
    Shelly says:

Sounds like you are having a great trip. Isn’t Caprock Canyons beautiful? I grew up about 60 miles to the east in a little town called Memphis. I’m in Kansas now but Texas will always, ALWAYS, be HOME. Enjoy your trip with your man and your dogs. I’m a dog person also and loved the pictures of your dogs in the RV.

    Blessings

Oh Beth, this THRILLS me πŸ™‚ I am a long time camper/RV’er. My parents even put us in an RV one summer and drove us from the mountains of ETN to the west coast and back. We spent a week in Texas and were gone for about 4 weeks. I promise its fun, once you get the hang of it. As an adult, I have a completely different perspective, but I still enjoy it. We just got back from a week camping at the Outer Banks, NC. As I was loading the camper for my family of 5 in 104 degree weather, I just kept reminding myself, “Yes, its vacation and it will be worth it” LOL And it was, we had a ball. We have replaced our mattress and sleep like babies.

I hope its an adventure you never forget! Looking forward to the next update.

    love you, too!!

    Anne says:

Haha. I just got back from 3 weeks! First with the children in our minivan visiting every nat’l monument we could find on the way, followed by “camping” in a 28 ft trailer (think microwave, bathtub!, hardly camping) in nat’l parks & ending with a few days in dog friendly hotels! This. is summer. Bless you siesta Mama. I missed you on vacation.

    Karen Milligan says:

We have a pop-up and I would rather be at a state park in one those than almost anywhere else.

The beds in my camper are a little hard too. We have improved that – Go by the nearest Wal-mart and buy one of those cheap egg crate mattresses. Once we even just bought a pool air mattress for my daughter and covered it with a sheet. It helps a lot with the sleeping.

I pray you will have a great time. Glamping as one reader before called it, is wonderful.

Enjoy God’s beautiful world and find his rest,
    Karen

  17. 67
    Vicki says:

    Hey Beth,

I’ve always said that I would never be a camper because I required air conditioning and carpet. With RVs, I guess I would need to throw in a great bed. πŸ™‚ My husband and I are also the type who love their 10 year old Shi-tzu, Mille (short for Millennium) to the point that she has NEVER been boarded. Only our next door neighbors keep her for us because she must stay in our house during the day and sleep between them (like she does us) at night.

Thanks for sharing. Can’t wait to hear more.

Dramamine=Drama + Mine!!! Hilarious! : ) Boy did we have some drama over taking that stuff when I was a kid! (But it beat the drama we had if we didn’t take it before a trip to the mountains… still, I always wondered why it had to taste SO AWFUL! Praise God eventually they created the chewable kind for us kids that couldn’t swallow nasty tasting pills.) (Did you really want to know that?)

    Enjoy your trip!!!!

Hi, Beth! So glad you all are able to get away a bit.
I showed Myra (the wonder-dog/ our Border Collie) the picture of Star and Geli. She is trying not to be super jealous. Since we had moved, bless her heart we felt like we have lived in our Honda Pilot (which we are super thankful for), but I think she’s just a bit jealous of all the room. (Seriously, one trip to look for houses we tried staying in a hotel with her…we wound up sleeping (trying to sleep) most of the night in the car, that is until the police came and circled the parking lot!) We are thinking a house with wheels could come in pretty handy! :0)

You sound so relaxed and at ease! Are you just “wandering” or do you have map routed? I leave next Friday for vacation and I am ready! Right now we are getting heavy rains and t-storms for a few horus in the Ozarks….yes we can use the rain but not all at once!
    Relax and enjoy

    Amy says:

Sounds like y’all are having a blast! I’ve always asked friends how they can stand all that involves the RV maintenance and actually enjoy the vacation. But from what I hear, those that own them, love them. Maybe Geli and Star aren’t the only ones trying to convince you to buy one. Keith may be up to something! πŸ˜‰ Have a relaxing, reviving vacation!

  25. 75

    Beth and Keith,
I’d say “have fun” but for the life of me I can’t imagine what would be fun about 10 hours in a vehicle on the road! My extent of sight seeing is when my family calls to me in the back seat where I am laying down, because I have had to take lots of Dramamine ( I actually had to look up what the maximum amount of it could be take in a 24 hour period!) and then they say “Look mom”, I sit up and say something like, “Yea, neato” and lay back down!

But I’ll say it anyway………Have fun and enjoy this time together.

I love that your rambling along in an RV. How unlike you. But it’s so good for you! Don’t you just love road trips? I know you do! I just got back from New Mexico myself. We also took long winding roads (although some were monotonously straight and long!) through ranches and farms. Absolutely gorgeous!

Enjoy your time on the road!

Hello Beth & Keith, I was just sitting here a-wondering if you all are going to drive that RV to Lexington, Kentucky next week-end for the Living Proof Live event. I am sure all of us that will be blessed to attend that event would just absolutely love for you to bring Keith, Geli and Star along with you (and even bring them out on stage) so we could greet them with a big old Kentucky welcome. But in the meantime just keep on having a great trip. I am so looking forward to next weekend. Love you and your family so very much!!!!!

Ha-Ha I don’t know what I loved the most; the fact that you are traveling in an RV or the photo of your dogs looking out the window in the RV. ha-ha-ha-

I hope you have a great time and get more sleep….it does a body… and mind good.

I’m so glad you’re having a good time Beth. It sounds just like my kind of vacation.
We have a horse ranch just down the road from us (in Blanco, TX) that raises those little, bitty horses. They just fascinate me every time we drive by. Amazing.
I hadn’t thought of the Wizard of Oz – but I love that idea.

We are at this moment flying at more thousand feet than I care to really think about – going from heinously hot-Atlanta to San Francisco to celebrate the boy’s entry into teenagerdom. God’s majesty just overwhelms me when I’m in an airplane looking down on the amazing landscapes that He created and it’s hard not to get emotional! Blessings on your trip – and ours. Congrats on vacationing in an RV, that is a great way to see the countryside up close & to really take in God’s creation. My husband & I have done the camping thing for over 10 years now & we too had the mattress problem. My recommendation is to stop somewhere & get a foam mattress topper, they are the best & it will be like sleeping in your bed at home. They are much better than an air mattress any day.

Your post reminded me of my first ever camping trip, when I was a child my parents bought a pop up camper & we took off on a 5 week trip across the country to California. We would camp a few days & then spend a night in a hotel. Wonderful vacation & great memories.

Enjoy the trip with your man & your dog kids.

Oh, Beth what an adventure. My husband grew up in a motorhoming family so of course, he bought a motorhome before we had a house. Never, ever been camping in all my life before then but it was so wonderful taking our children all over this beautiful country. We now are looking forward to just us going again. You can stop anywhere, don’t have to look for a bathroom exit(few and far between in some places) and you come home so refreshed, not like in hotels and oh the people you will meet!!! Hope you enjoy your trip….JEALOUS though!!

    JoAnn in Houston says:

I LOVE road trips. This post brought back a wave of great memories. My ex-husband and I loved to go on adventures. We rented an RV with my baby sister and husband once and drove from Houston to South Padre, TX for a long weekend at the beach (we camped right on the beach). We had so much fun in that RV even when my sister and I found a bunch of snails that I swear looked just like escargot. So…..we decided to boil em up and eat them with lemon and butter like the restaurants. We stunk up that RV something awful and had to air it out for hours. Definitely NOT the same snails. We laughed till we hurt something. Then, the guys went 3-wheeling on the beach and, as guys can do, decided to play chicken. They had alittle accident and my ex complained that his wrist was hurting. We tried to get him to go to a clinic, but Nooooooo, he couldn’t stop for that. When we got home I made him go to the doctor and he came back in a cast from over his elbow to his hand. He had broke his wrist pretty bad. A true adventurer!

Another time the two of us drove from Houston to California with no agenda what so ever. We had planned a trip to Mexico, but Mexico City got hit with an earthquake I didn’t want to go to a disaster area for vacation. We had 10 days off and our bags were already packed. It was the best time EVER. I will never forget how beautiful the scenery was. Thanks for bringing it to mind.

Praying for you and Keith to make a great adventure. Relax, exhale, and enjoy the time together. It’s God’s plan. You both deserve it !!

wow! ~ i’m in tears and speechless ~
the tears not so rare… but the speechless… mmhmmm…
yes, that’s a rarity! (my grandfather named me motor mouth on his CB when i was a little girl…i should say younger, all of 5’1″ and almost 40 yrs., still can’t keep my mouth shut, thus i ramble ~ i try, does that count?)have managed to come up with the most creative ways to text/type rambling without a period at the end of a statement, and although my mother was an english teacher, i still get the whole comma vs. semi-colon ‘thang’ (yes, i was exstatic to hear that in Esther study)mixed up.
Ha!! my 70 yr. old mother just text me all one word… “bestmaniever”! THIS ought to be interesting! She usually just texts “hi” which means call me. ~ Recently retired from being a sorority mother, sometimes it was hard to share God love it ~oh my gosh… i couldnt stand it, I had to call her… she was trying to tell me that the manicotti i had made for her was the best she’s ever had! now THAT’s funny!

Oh Beth – what a fun post. And gosh darnit – I’m so bummed you didn’t get a picture of the waist high herd of horses cause it did sound so flippingly bizarro! And you can know I’m glad Jesus wants to hang out with me while I do the laundry – cause otherwise He and I may not be hanging out at all (at least not today – when my laundry pile looks as tall as an ancient ziggurat!) Yikes – Boaz (my 14 yr old) just walked in with a lake trout. Looks like more laundry – cause when that boy fillets, fish scales manage to fly through the air and dirty up every dish towel in sight. What it is to raise a boy ~

    (fun! That’s what!)

Have a blast in that RV, Beth Moore! And just be glad you’re not in a tent!!!

    Hi Miss Beth, dearest,

Oh my, oh my ! I thought I would never “see” the day when you actually planned to go RV’ing !!! I’m nearly laughing my head off over it! πŸ™‚

Of course, I have been camping since I was “knee-high to a grasshopper”, up here in good ole’ Wisconsin, where, the humidity dies down, and the temperature cools off at night, too. Thanks be to God ! πŸ™‚ And, this summer in particular, it has been “relatively hot and humid” here [in relation to Houston summers, that is].

I do pray you enjoy some honest to goodness “peace, serenity, and Sabbath rest…” God’s blessings to you dear ones !

    In Christ’s Love,

      Hello, Wisconsin Siesta!

Jennifer, I think we might be neighbors. We’ve only lived here for (almost) two years, now, and don’t know the whole are very well, but it was so nice to see a “neighbor” on the blog. We live in Kenosha!

Oh, I wish I were on the road with you. My husband and I and our little Westie, Maggie, spent 2 years in our motorhome before buying a house and settling down again. It was the most amazing time of my life. We rarely stayed anywhere longer than a week. Most stops were for 3-4 nights. We would see the sights in that area and then move on to another place.

Maggie rode many miles on my lap so she could see out the window. Cows and horses always brought on barking. She didn’t limit herself to barking only at living things though. A pasture with rolls of freshly baled hay always had her barking, too. Maybe her eyesight isn’t so good.

As for the mattress, many rv’ers replace their mattresses for a better quality one or else buy a comfortable topper for it.

If you haven’t seen the Robin Williams movie, you must see it. It will be much more meaningful to you after your trip!!!

And there is a huge difference in rving and camping. I much prefer rving.

Have a wonderful and relaxing trip!

You were in New Mexico and we missed you!? Ah well, glad Keith enjoyed his enchiladas. Hopefully you will quit working on your vacation and take the time to enjoy one another. Not that we don’t love hearing all about it, but we will survive if you take a week off! So much love to you and your family. Drive safely (and honk next time you hit Albuquerque!)

Thanks so much for the reminder about meeting with God while we fold clothes and wash dishes. I needed that just now. I’m a stay-at-home mom of two boys: 4 yrs(and a half, as he reminds me), and 16 months. I do a lot of folding and washing. Today I lost my temper and acted out of anger with my oldest. After I apologized to him and asked for his forgiveness, I told him I was going to tell God I was sorry too. As I later folded laundry while the boys were napping, I thought of God and how I so need His help as a mom, but I didn’t exactly meet with Him. Then I decided to get on this distract-o-puter thing and I got to read your blog. I now know what I need to go do. I need to meet with Him. For me, and for my boys. Bye.

P.S. “Like stuffed animals. In herds.” Cracked me up!

Love hearing about your RV travels.

Hearing about the miniature houses cracked me up! It reminds me of when I moved to Texas with my husband. I had lived in Texas before but it was in San Antonio as a child. My husband was being stationed in Wichita Falls, TX and the only thing I knew about it was that it was on the Oklahoma border, two hours north of Dallas. We drove out there from Florida a few months early to find a house to buy. Well, once you leave Dallas there is NOTHING for those two hours.

Well, nothing except a CAMEL FARM. My poor husband did not know what to do when all I could do was cry about where in the middle of no where was he moving us to. There was a camel farm for crying out loud!!!!

Anyways, enjoy all the adventures I imagine an RV trip will bring!
