Not a Sunny Day

*UPDATE FROM BETH*
No change, you sweet, sweet sisters. Thank you so much for caring. We’ve looked absolutely everywhere in both the car and on foot. I told Melissa about thirty minutes after I picked her up and she’s looked obsessively for her ever since. I think you’ll be blessed to know that she found two of my fellow LPM staff members looking for Sunny in our neighborhood, too, and in two different cars. That’s the kind of people I work with. Sabrina, our director, almost couldn’t pull it together today. Curtis tried to be really low key about the whole thing, not wanting to enter into the drama, then we found out he’d been out in the car looking, too. She’s the kind of dog everybody loves.

We’re making posters and putting them out tomorrow and at that point feel that we’ve done all we can do. I will definitely let you know how this turns out but I won’t just keep on and on about it. In a world of rabid breast cancer and missing children, we’ll try to keep our perspective. Thank you so much, Siesta, for mentioning her chapter in “Feathers From My Nest.” That’s one of the most fitting tributes to our fine dog that we have in print. One of our Siestas, Allison Ashton, painted me the most beautiful and perfect rendering of Sunny that you can imagine for my birthday last year then she had it matted in red and framed in black. It’s the most precious thing ever. I have never loved a gift more. I’m so, so thankful to have it especially now. I love you, Allison.

Enough. Thanks for sharing my drama today. You are a wonderful community and you mean something to my life. Now, I’m going to go fix some comfort drinks (homemade hot chocolate with whipped cream) for Lis and I.

*UPDATE FROM AMANDA*
Mom wanted me to let you know that Sunny was not at the pound. We are hoping that she is just going to show up at the front door any time now. Please pray for Mom that she will be able to, in her words, pull it together. She is picking up Melissa from the airport right now. It’s her first trip home since she moved and we don’t want a cloud of sadness hanging over this sweet time with her. And in case this isn’t clear, I want y’all to know that we do have perspective about this. Sunny is just a dog, but it’s still sad to think about the loss of a furry friend. We love y’all! Thanks!

Hey, My Dear Siestas! I had planned to write you something funny today and share a few highlights from our trip to D.C. for the Esther intros and outros but something happened that took the funny right out of me.

My beloved Sunny dog is missing. When I got home from work yesterday around 5:00 PM, she darted out the front door. That’s not at all unusual. The whole neighborhood knows her and she has some good dog friends she frequently visits. She’s never been a dog you could confine. She will dig her way out of any backyard and shoot her way out of any open door. She was a stray sixteen years ago when she took up on my front porch. Our family has always teased that she was from the Order of Melchizedek because we never knew where she came from. Over the months that followed we became inseparable. During the worst season of my life, she sat right beside me while I bawled then would suddenly give my face what Keith and I came to call “the speed lick.” You never saw it coming. Then I’d laugh really hard and she’d wag her tail. Mission accomplished.

She should have sauntered back within the hour but didn’t. Keith and I drove all over the place last night then each got up many times during the night and looked out front for her. I put water on the porch because I knew when she came back she’d be thirsty. This morning, still no sign of her. Keith drove for over an hour this morning while I tried to get ready for work at home but bawled so hard, I couldn’t get my make-up on for the longest. We really hoped that the dog pound picked her up but, so far, they say they don’t have her. Keith is going to the facility as soon as it opens at 1:00 PM to see for himself.

I know this sounds silly to anyone who is not a dog lover but I am beside myself. She is my best buddy and is absolutely obsessed with me. She cries even if I’m temporarily out of sight. She follows me around, bless her heart, and sits wherever I do then sleeps right beside my bed where I can literally reach down and pet her. She is very old and I know she won’t live a whole lot longer but I want to be right beside her holding her furry gray face when she finishes her job as the world’s best guard dog and my most trusty friend.

I’ll let you know what happens. We Siestas have shared a lot of life in the last many months and I thought you might as well know that your buddy is fit to be tied. I love you guys and I’ll get you an update as soon as I have one.

centraliaDear Beth, I tried to comment before and I guess it didn’t work, so not sure you will get this or not.
I am praying for Sunny… and wanted to share our dog story with you.
I have been divorced well over a decade now. My ex got tired of my son’s dog so was going to shoot him (a habit of his). My son came home from his dad’s just bawling, begging me to take the dog, but I couldn’t as we were not permitted to have pets. I cried as I told my son we needed to pray for his dog, as I knew how his dad was about things like that, and I was just praying that my son would not have to watch. So we prayed and prayed.
And God, our awesome God, answered my little son’s prayers and someone wanted to take his dog, when before they had been completely unable to find someone to take her. I know without a doubt it was God answering my son’s prayers.
Yes, God cares about our love for our pets, you better believe he does. Thank you, Lord……. Thank you….

“Consider the ravens; they do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them…Consider how the lilies grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these.” Luke 12:24,27

God knows right where Sunny is and He knows how much you love that dog! I love that He cares about even the smallest of details in our lives. Sunny is His creation and His gift to you, the way she “happenned” to use your porch as her home. That was no coincidence, that was God! What a blessing!
    I’ll be praying…

    Your siesta in Christ, Marion

I understand how you feel–several years ago, my dog ran off and was gone for only 3 days, but they were a very long 3 days (in the AZ heat)–and I had a hard time focusing on anything else, just hoping and praying for my dog.

I’m praying for Sunny to come home soon and for your peace.

Beth, Don’t you think for one moment that a dog is just an animal. The Gracious Lord we love and serve, places them in our lives to exemplify unconditional love. They ARE Family members.

We have three cats, and last fall, one came up missing and we prayed and believed God for her return, and after 4 days, I had almost given up, and then I heard a “meow” at like 5 in the morning, got up, and called and called ~ but nothing. Then later on in the day, I was outside hanging laundry and here she came, just a sauntering up, like she had not been gone at all!!! I screamed!!!! DEVA’S HOME!!! My three year old, came running and yelling, “Thank You Jesus for bringing my kitty home!!!”

I am agreeing with all my “siestas” for Sunny’s Home coming.

    Luv you sis’

    Sweet Beth,
My heart just aches for you and the girls. I just lost my precious Candi Lynn a month ago and so my emotions are still raw concerning the loss of a furry family member. Candi was 18 years old and had been a part of our family since she was 4. I will never forget my brother, husband, & best friend huddled in the examining room at the vet’s office, holding our precious girl, while my mom and dad on speakerphone from Oklahoma City (I’m in AL) prayed and ushered Candi into the presence of the Lord. It was a most precious moment and one I will never forget. When I get sad, I just remember that she is in my mansion in heaven waiting on me. I am praying for Sunni’s quick and safe return to you and your family. It’s all in perspective, but it is ok to be sad! I love you!! LeighAnne

P.S. I just wanted to tell the rest of the Siestas that I love the stories about y’all’s pets.

Oh and Autum, there are some pictures of Sunny on the blog. I believe they’re in the beginning of 2007. (I went back through all the entries last night until I got to her pictures). They’re soo adorable!!!

I am not what you call a dog lover but our family has a dear one who is showing his age more and more. His name is Barkley and he is going on 14 years old. We rescued him from the pound when he was a little one and when he fought for his life with Parvo we cried and prayed that he would pull through and he did! So…I guess I could be a dog lover and I can empathize with what you are going through. Barkley was missing for several hours not long ago. My daughter found him finally tangled up in some thorny bushes and he was afraid to move to get out. I know how we all felt the panic and concern when he was gone and happy we were to see him back. He passes gas and he sneaks and eats the cat food but we love him to pieces. I pray Sunny finds her way home and I pray for comfort for you all.
    Love YOU to pieces too!

Dearest Beth, I pray that you find your precious Sunny. When I was a little girl growing up I always had a dog. They weren’t expensive dogs, usually we would get them as a puppy from a neighbor who’s dog had puppies. But I loved them so much. They were my true best friends. My husband is allergic to dog hair so we don’t have any animals. I do miss having a dog and I know my children would love to have one but that would make daddy really sick.

On a positive note, your sweet Melissa is home for a visit. I pray you have a great visit together. I hope you can show us some pictures and share some stories. Tell Melissa hello and I hope and pray her and Colin are forever happy together.

    God Bless.

    Lord,

Thank you for this dear family. You know their love for this four legged family member. You created animals for us to enjoy. There are many things that we dog owners are comfortable sharing only with our pets. What a bond it forms!!

I pray that you would create in Sunny a desire for her home that lets her stop at nothing to get back to where she belongs.

Thank you that the four original Moores could all be together right now, laughing and crying together over their favorite Sunny memories. We ask for some fresh new ones with Sunny’s return to his family.

    In Jesus’ name,

I don’t know if this has already been mentioned, but, have you tried calling around to local veterinarians? ADVICE! This just happened to us! Did the driving/yelling/pound trips/poster thing. He’s old, not very bright, and totally inbred, but our precious treasure. We looked in neighborhoods that we knew he couldn’t have made it to (we thought). Guess he panicked, cuz he made it FAR away at someones back porch that looked like ours. They’d even put up signs! But they were so far away, we never saw them. Got him back SIX MONTHS LATER after randomly seeing one of their signs still up. They’d sold him to someone in Virginia, and his name had been changed to Ernie. ALL TRUE. I SWEAR. Someone HAS to have that dog. Go far, look for signs, and post them EVERYWHERE.

Today is my bday and started out with a bit of disappointment. My dog greeted me this morning, sat on my lap, all 100 lbs, and I so thought of you. Here is what I am praying for you today…2 things…that “the peace of God will guard your heart and mind in Christ Jesus” as I know you also have to continue to “do life” in spite of your sadness, and “to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask…be the glory…” I am asking for Sunny’s safe return until He has us pray otherwise. Beth, I cannot explain, I can only be obedient. I feel an overwhelming presence of God wanting me (of all people) to share with you that you should look for Sunny VERY VERY VERY close to your house. Beth and Amanda,
Still praying for sweet Sunny. Just had a couple of ideas; petfinder.com is a web site where you can find pets to adopt but you might also find her there if someone turned her in at a pound farther away. Also, on the way to work a van passed me advertising K-9 Search and Rescue. This is Ohio but maybe there’s companies in Houston who do that.
On a side note, I’m curious what you think about pets in heaven. The story of Balaam and the talking donkey has always intrigued me and I’ve never heard it preached on. What seems funny is that Balaam didn’t seem shocked that the donkey talked and I wonder if they were close after that. Maybe it was a one time thing.
Many prayers for you and Sunny

Hi guys, I don’t know if you have thought of this, I’m sure you have…but put an ad for a lost dog on craigslist under the pet section (www.craigslist.org). It’s best to put a recent picture and a contact phone number. People post ads about ‘found’ dogs all the time so be sure to check for those as well, but it’s a great community, and you might get a hit.
