An Open Letter to LifeWay

Dear Dr. Rainer, Trustees, Employees, and retired LifeWay President, Dr. Jimmy Draper,

Today I will board a plane, God willing, with my dearest loves – my husband of 36 years, our two adult daughters, our son-in-law, and our two grandchildren – to head to Nashville to commemorate and celebrate God’s inconceivable kindness to us in 20 years of Bible studies with you. I will have the chance to express some of my heart to you face-to-face while I am there but I’m unsure of being able to convey all I’d like to say without crying. And what if it spun into serious tears which, while sweet and sentimental, can prove to be embarrassing and awkward in a public address? And what if, on the way home, I had to get furious with myself for not being able to say what I’d flown to Nashville to say? Thus, with your patience, this letter.

Exactly 20 years ago, my husband, Keith, made a few phone calls behind my back to find out when the very first Bible study – A Woman’s Heart: God’s Dwelling Place – would be placed on a shelf at one of your stores in Houston. I was too green a new author to even ask you guys about a release date. I had no idea how the whole thing worked or, for crying out loud, if it would work at all. Keith, however, has never been one for holding back questions. He took me out to dinner without saying a single word about the Bible study then told me that he needed to run an errand on the way home. He pulled up in front of the store, opened my car door, took me by the hand, and walked me into the store. He marched me down an aisle like he knew just where he was going then stood me right in front of the ugliest cover I would ever love.

A Woman's Heart

And we both cried.

As you who were around at that time know, there were never any promises from your side or expectations from ours about a second Bible study or, with the second, a third.

What began as a publishing relationship turned headlong and heart-long into a ministry partnership.

We who have worked together on the curriculum team have marveled over and over again that God would risk anything at all on such a flawed concoction of people. Early on we came to the conclusion that God either has a lot of grace or very poor taste.

His grace was not in vain. I want to boast in Christ for the caliber of people that I’ve had the privilege to labor alongside at LifeWay for 20 years. From Day 1 to this day, every single man and woman I’ve gotten to know (young, old, or middle aged, from customer care to graphic design to editorial to management and so on) has had a heart to love and serve Jesus Christ and an authentic desire to see people come to faith and be discipled in God’s Word.

Every person. Without exception. I mention it because I just don’t think that’s normal. I think that’s the Holy Spirit.

Every single time I had a conference call to run a concept for a new study past the discipleship team, it wrapped up in earnest prayer, placing it before God, asking Him to do with it what He would. Never did you enter into it lightly. Never did you pressure me to write on a particular concept. You always gave me the room to seek God for what He’d stir in my heart in the pages of Scripture for the next Bible study.

20 years is more than enough time to get cynical, to lose respect, and to shift into automatic and just shell out material that doesn’t have an ounce of the Holy Spirit on it.

Because of the unfathomable grace and sustaining power of God through our Lord Jesus Christ, I will board that plane today free of cynicism and full of respect for you. I don’t have a sick feeling in my stomach like I sold my soul to the devil or have been a part of playing people or putting on a big act.

I have had the privilege to do the one thing on earth I feel most called to do.

And I’ve had the privilege to do that one thing with you.

Thank you.

That’s what I’m writing this open letter to say.

Thank you so much for your patience with me through 20 years of growing and changing and going through all sorts of highs and lows and crises and losses and some excruciating learning experiences. Thank you for dealing with the drama. Thank you for standing with me, believing God with me, dreaming with me, serving with me, and for fighting for me. 20 years is time enough to see someone at her best and her worst. We are long past the point where we don’t really know each other. And here we are. Still together. We didn’t have to always see everything the same way for me to be so deeply thankful we’d seen it together. I would not trade a minute of it.

A dyed in the wool sanguine, God used another little element to make this thing work for 20 years. I have laughed my head off with some of you. You’ve got some men and women on your payroll that are among my favorite people on the planet. I have been to the other side of the world and back numerous times with a merry band of your employees, made enough memories for 10 lifetimes, and laughed till I cried. I have eaten pizza on the Mount of Olives with them and walked with them through a foot of sheep manure in fields outside of Bethlehem. The privilege of working with people that you just flat-out like is no small  thing and it is not wasted on me.

I could write for hours and still not convey all that is stirring in my heart toward you but just this one time, I’m going to accept what my editor has tried to tell me for years: Beth, less is more.

So I will end with this and then bid us onward to the future:

Today I set this stack before our glorious and faithful God in His honor alone as a stone of remembrance. As an occasion to look back over our collective shoulders, reflect and say our God has been so gracious to us. For He alone can establish the work of human hands. May this makeshift stone of remembrance made of pages and ink serve as living proof to somebody reading today that, if He could be willing to use someone like me, He is willing to use absolutely anyone.

Bible studies

With so much love for all of you at LifeWay, for those recently retired, and for an unstoppable visionary in a wheelchair who now stands strong and complete in the presence of Jesus,

Beth

Jesus, You and I alone know the miracle You have accomplished. We alone know the depths from which You pulled me. Your boundless grace saved me, not just from the enemy, but from myself. The patience with which You have taught me, disciplined me, helped me, refocused me, restored me, redirected me and constantly revived me is astonishing. You just don’t give up on Your own, do You? You, Jesus, are my Prince. You are the single greatest joy of my life. Thank You for the cross.

Thank you Lord for using Beth Moore and the Holy Spirit, to help teach us women how to dig deeper into your word. To become the women you created us to be to be servants for you to hide your word in our hearts to be able to stand when we are attacked by the devil shoots those arrows at us. Thank you Beth for having a heart for Jesus and a heart for us. The first time I laid my eyes on you was in Pine Mountain Ga. at Callaway Gardens I knew then God had great things ahead for you. I have the first book you written Things Pondered, you even signed it. When I first took the first Bible Study I said oh my I need a college degree. As I began digging into his word God spoke to my soul and glad I never looked backed from digging into Gods word. Wished I could give you a big hug and love on you the way you have through your knowledge and words! Love you my sweet sister in Christ

    Dear Beth:

I have been blessed by your studies. I use to tell people you were my mentor. I didn’t have any women to look up to (Christian Woman in my church, until you came along. I use to say I want to be like Beth when I grow up. I am 52 yrs old. I am not a Beth Moore. I had hoped one day I would meet you face to face and have coffee. I feel I know you because I have walked with you for the past 20 years. Thank you. Hey if you ever have time for coffee I am available. I live in Taylorsville KY. Blessings to you my sweet mentor and friend. Connie Burkett

Dear Beth, On July 15th, 1998 in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, I met you at a small church. My life was changed that weekend forever. I had brought one of my best friends with me. Many women from my home church were there. I still have the HomeLife magazine from 1999 you are on the cover. The wonderful way you have brought us all closer to Our Lord Jesus is miraculous. GOD moves through you and I am so grateful for that. We have all been blessed in so many ways because of your personal testimonies. Thank you so much for your witness. Your faithfulness has saved many and has brought them closer to GOD! “Heart to Heart” “Hand to Hand” will always have a special meaning. The drama you did about the filling of our lives with stuff and then filling the vase with Living Water was huge. You are the Best! My thoughts & prayers are always with you. God in You Delights me. I was saved at nine and accepted Jesus as my Lord & Saviour. Baptised at Ten. I truly am the Daughter of The King Of Kings. Love to you & your beautiful family.

I was also with LaVonne in Jackson Hole meeting you for the first time! What a blessing that was. I was on the welcome team. I remember going back to the hotel after the evening and everyone comparing what you had written in the front of our books. It was as if each one had received just the right word from God through you. You stayed at that church that night until everyone had met you and had their books signed. We were a small band of believers (300) but you lit a fire under us and it has been burning brighter and bigger ever since. God bless you and your family for your many years of service to our King! In His Grip, JoAnne

    Thank you Beth and Lifeway,

I am stronger in the Lord because of you! I love Him and know Him deeper because of your obedience, work, energy, love for Jesus and love for us. I have had the joy of doing several of your studies. Each has been life-changing. Not only have the studies impacted my life, but through me, I know they have made a difference in my family – – impacting my husband and our three sons. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I hope this time with your family and family in Christ is just flat-out amazing. He is SO good.

    With love and prayers,

    Beth,
I echo what so many have already said. Jesus used you at a most important time in my life. Eternally grateful. You’re not just a distant writer. Through the website and Twitter we all get to ‘do life’ together – the ups and the downs- and I think that’s so important.
Thank you for being real – thank you for being so faithful to Gods call on your life!

Thank you Beth and to the Moore family for all you’ve sacrificed and given. Thank you Jesus Christ for using Beth & this team to touch so many lives. I have learned and grown so much through the 10 studies I was blessed to facilitate. Thank you again for teaching me to fall in love with the Word of God!

I was doing my Community Bible Study a couple of days ago and the question was asked, “Who, because of godly investment in you, might be able to call you his or her “letter of recommendation”? “Share how this person invested in you.” It was referring to how Paul in 2 Corinthians said that their (the Corinthian Church) lives were his personal letters of recommendation. Well I thought about a person that I personally know that had invested in my life and I did list him and all of the various reasons. But I also listed you, Ms. Beth. You have taught me the Word of God through more than 10 Bible Studies and at least 3 simulcasts, a book and various devotionals. And you have taught me life application of these great Biblical truths and how to mature as a Christian through the Word of God. You may not have set out to do that for me personally. But I feel like at least some of your sweat, hard work and tears were done for me. And I hope I stand as a personal letter of recommendation for your life’s work and for all that you have put into these studies! For this I am grateful! I love Jesus and understand His heart so much more because of the investment that you have made into countless lives. Thank you so much! I love you like you were my sis! Or at least my dear fellow blonde friend!
    Love in Jesus!

Sweet Beth, I know God has anointed you to be the woman of God he has called you to be. So very grateful you have stayed the course even when I know the evil tries to trip us up.
A few summers ago I had a layover in Houston and told God ” I know Beth Moore is from Houston. And, 20 minutes later you sat down right next to me at Chilis and I got you to sign my devotional. Another sweet nugget, this past Nov my hubby and I traveled to Israel and our Tour guide,Ari, knew you well and worked with you on different studies. I had him sign my Patriarchs book.
Thanking God for you …. Love

Congratulations Beth and Thank you Lifeway! I have learned so much from your studies. Your heart is beautiful just like you and I’ve come to love your family through the LPM Blog. Most of my days are good but on the bad days I don’t know what I would have done without your words of encouragement and your sense of humor. The LPM gals seems like friends to me. Have a wonderful trip. I know you will enjoy every minute of it!

    Deb says:

    Dear Beth,
Sweet words pour from your sweet soul. Thank you for the twenty years of being dedicated to what God has called you to do. You have no idea what an encouragement you are to me – I have a daughter that has a similar story as you do – sexual abuse and all that goes with it. I stand on God’s promises daily and so does she. She is a walking miracle of God’s grace and power. It is just really encouraging, especially on days more difficult, to see the LIVING PROOF of what Romans 8:28 looks like from your life story. It helps me to remember by your example that HE is FAITHFUL and HIS promises for her are TRUE. God bless.

  14. 164
    Jimmy Hester says:

Beth, what a wonderful expression of thanks. As a member of the discipleship editorial team in the early years of your publishing experience, I know how meaningful your writing was for each and every person who touched your material. It was so appropriate that you included a picture of my dear friend and colleague Lee Sizemore. Lee was an inspiration to many and he certainly treasured his experiences with you. Congratulations on 20 years of ministry with LifeWay.

Beth and lifeway, because of your studies I finally get it, the depth of God’s love for me. If I have learned anything from these studies, it is how wide and deep is the saviour’s love for me. Thank you for writing them and lifeway for publishing them.

I have joined you along with others on most of your Bible Studies…I have always known that with God’s help and your teaching that I would never be the same after going through your studies…thank you for your obedience to our Father and for your willingness and joy in preparing God’s word for someone such as myself. I stand amazed at God’s grace and mercy and never ending commitment to make me a better daughter I surely am not worthy but am so grateful that my Father never gives up on me. Help me to strive to be what He intends for me to me….love you more than words….

What a blessing you are Beth – thank you for your Yes to God’s calling!!! Your passion for Jesus is contagious and so inspiring!! God has used you in more ways than I can even count to speak to and to guide me. To encourage, provide, nurture, teach, preach, touch the core of my heart, and to help me deeper in love with Jesus. And all with a great sense of humor – and made me laugh and CRY – and sometimes even the ugly cry.

Heb 6:10 – “God will not forget your work and the love you have shown Him as you have helped His people and continue to help them”

Thank you for your genuiness and giving us your heart! What the heart gives away is never gone – it is keep in the hearts of another.

Beth, thank you for taking the time to send such a gracious letter about the relationship you have with LifeWay………a relationship that has stirred and started so many people to develop a relationship with Jesus Christ. May your faithfulness to Him continue, and your work be favored. May God bless you and your family.

  29. 179

Beautiful, thank you for sharing such a sweet letter.

  30. 180

My heart is aching both bitter and sweet… I am truly thankful for your willingness to wait before the Lord to hear His tender whisper as the wind rolled by. It was the ‘thorns’ of the curse that in turn Christ wore as His crown in the first bible study that drew the desire out of me to KNOW Him more. Thank you for all the spiritual warfare that you took on so that we all could experience our great and glorious Lord more! May the One and Only Lord God Almighty lay a blanket of blessings on you and your family. Until we meet Him face-to-face…

    Edith says:

Beth, My friend Karen Porter and i had said so many times how gifted you were. Our husbands could not believe someone could be that good. We learned that you would be doing a Sunday night study on Revelation at 1st. Our husbands were the first to say they wanted to go. On you first night they were sold on your gift and on the last night they said “oh no is that all, we want to hear more!!” I thank God I have learned so much about Gods word from your studies. I have grown as a christian. I give God all the praise for all of your studies and I thank you!!!!

Thank you Beth for that beautiful deep heartfelt thank you to Lifeway and Lifeway for allowing the Lord to put Beth in your path for such a wonderful gift to so very many, many women. When I opened your blog and saw the study my heart fluttered. After 10 years of prayer for my close knitting friends one of them asked me to lead them in a BS knowing I had several sets from leading in Calif for several years. They liked the name “A Woman’s heart: God’s Dwelling Place.” We started last week and they are liking it. One of them is 88 and I call her our English treasure. Totally overwhelmed when God chose to answer my prayer when I questioned Him so often why am I still with them. I cried on the way home. My heart is so full of thankfulness continually to the Lord and for you.

    Linda says:

Beth, I have only been doing Bible Studies for the last 5 of my almost 65 years. Most of the studies have been yours. I am so thankful for what God has allowed you to do. I have been in church most of my life and a believer for many many years, but I NEVER knew how living for God could change my life!! Through your studies, and with the help of the Holy Spirit my life is different!! I have sooo much more to learn and I look forward to each study I do. I want to be an exclamation mark person!! I pray you will be richly blessed at your 20 year celebration!! Wish I could be there to enjoy it with you. I hope one day to look in your eyes and say thank you!! Thank you for listening to God, for being obedient to God’s calling and for loving God with all your heart!! Cannot wait to hear details of this special time 🙂

    Lonette Brutke-Brown says:

Beth, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your insight, love, and humor. Esther was life-changing. It helped me see how God was preparing me for what I am dealing with now. I’m at the lowest I’ve ever been, but still believe that God the Father Almighy is ahead of me with His arms out stretched out saying, “Come on, Child. Daddy’s here.” As I cry, I know He weeps with me. Meeting you some day is on my bucket list; but even if I don’t, thank you for being God’s servant and deliverer of His Word. Congratulations on 20 years! As God says, “Thank you my good and faithful servant.” God Bless from Idaho! 🙂

    Sweet Beth,
Wow to see all those studies stacked just amazed me. You have been His instrument to so many of us whose hearts hunger to know and be like Him. It has been quite a ride and we all have been so challenged, blessed, reproved, instructed, stretched, and more intimate with the ONE . Your love of Him has stirred our souls and hearts. And that ripple of Living Water has been the refreshment to many a parched soul. You have kept us focused on HIM, and that alone has given us hope during this journey of life….So thank you so much.
We often pray for you at our studies ……anyone who stretches out on a limb as you, needs prayer covering……We hold our umbrellas high over you….blessings Beth…Your legacy for the next generation and your family will bring forth many a crown at His feet…Glory

    Kim Wittekind says:

    Beth,
God has used you to draw me closer to Him than I ever knew was possible. Thank you. When you told the story of your going to an early Bible study where an older man was teaching, and after it was over you went out to your car and said you weren’t sure what that was but you wanted it, that’s exactly how I felt. You helped me fall in love with God’s Word. When our church where my husband is pastor was going through a terrible split, I got ahold of “When godly people do ungodly things”. I did a week’s worth of homework and watched a video every day until I finished it, which saved both my sanity and my faith. God has used your studies to both enrich and change my life. Thank you.

This is beautifully written just like all of your publications. Your partnership with Lifeway is a testament to our faithful God! Thank you for being vulnerable in who you are and sharing His truth! I have broken free from some pretty serious chains in each study that God led me too and it was always in His timing that I studied them! I have laughed at your stories and cried! I feel as though you are a true sister of mine. Anyone that can lead me to such an intimate relationship with my Heavenly Father is my sister forever! Thank you for your faithful service! What a true disciple you are! Continued blessings upon your journey!

    Deborah Mott says:

    Dear Beth,

Thank you for this Beautiful, passionate, glorious, tribute to the LORD and HIS team that you and your family partnered with to bring us (the world over!) the greatest treasure on earth: THE TRUE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST! You have stood in awe of JESUS and HIS CROSS AND RESURRECTION and HIS COSTS and LOVE to US and kept LOVE FOR THE LORD and focus on HIM a spotlight and highest call. You have been a Mary of Bethany to JESUS and have shown the world how worthy JESUS IS TO GIVE ALL TO HIM bc HE GAVE HIS ALL FOR US! Thank you and Thank you for these rich, thought out words that form a picture of the great GRACE and in a sense express or acknowledge CHRIST’s co-heirship inheritance you are living and sharing with us! You and yours are doing as John says in
    1 John1 (NLT)

1 We proclaim to you the one who existed from the beginning,[a] whom we have heard and seen. We saw him with our own eyes and touched him with our own hands. He is the Word of life. 2 This one who is life itself was revealed to us, and we have seen him. And now we testify and proclaim to you that he is the one who is eternal life. He was with the Father, and then he was revealed to us. 3 We proclaim to you what we ourselves have actually seen and heard so that you may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. 4 We are writing these things so that you may fully share our joy.[b]

    Living in the Light
5 This is the message we heard from Jesus[c] and now declare to you: God is light, and there is no darkness in him at all. 6 So we are lying if we say we have fellowship with God but go on living in spiritual darkness; we are not practicing the truth. 7 But if we are living in the light, as God is in the light, then we have fellowship with each other, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, cleanses us from all sin.

You have lived these verses out for all to see and receive! The LORD is ever present in your life in a real sense and you have taught millions how to access HIM through repentance and covering by HIS BLOOD ATONEMENT (the CROSS AND RESURRECTION)…! You have granted us a glimpse into the true fellowship you have with the LORD and given us a true appetite to know CHRIST MORE and the power of His Resurrection and you have taught us how to fellowship one with another! Thank you!

    (NLT) Psalm 127
A song for pilgrims ascending to Jerusalem. A psalm of Solomon.

1 Unless the Lord builds a house, HE HAS
the work of the builders is wasted. YOUR WORK IS PROOF OF HIS BUILDING…
Unless the Lord protects a city, HE HAS PROTECTED YOU AND YOURS….

I for one, and I think I join a multitude of people and angels and the LORD JESUS HIMSELF, am thankful to God for you Beth Moore and family…Thank you Keith for showing men how to honor and love your wife by that dinner date and surprise trip to the bookstore to see the first Bible study!!!!! WOW, HOW ROMANTICALLY LOVING AND THOUGHTFUL, how supportive, full of surprise and adventure! How GOD orchestrated so much beauty and living proof REDEMPTION is majestic with hard to describe magnitude in its magnificence: IT IS CHRIST ALONE that brings it forth!

I do not see Living Free, Loving Well and Revelation among the “memorial stack”. I have done every one of your studies and many of them multiple times. THANK YOU! God used these to anchor my heart to His and keep me alive and believing what He says and not what the church or the wounding of His people have done or said! I know GOD birthed HOPE and TRUTH and LIFE in me when I was hopeless, believing lies that I thought were true and when on the verge of suicide many many many times! The TRUE GOSPEL proclaimed by you through your writings and proclaimed and prayed over and your living proof life spoke and speak volumes to the countless ones out here like me. The rising of the BRILLIANT, radiant SUN (SON) over that strip club is a picture of what God has and is doing through out the land as the BODY of believers have received the GRACE, MERCY, PEACE, LOVE, TRUTH, HOPE….THAT THE GOSPEL LIFE BRINGS and has brought THROUGH YOUR LIFE AND YOUR PARTNERSHIPS IN THE GOSPEL! It seems that GOD IS BREATHING ON THE DEAD BONES…BUT GOD…He alone is doing this!

Thank you for the fellowship you have with me and others through this blog and HIs ministry in you! I pray for you daily and thank God for you often!
IN DEEPEST GRATITUDE and THANKSGIVING! IN CHRIST BY GREAT GRACE,
    Deborah

If this was meant to make us tear up… it worked. 😉 Thank you just isn’t a big enough word, Beth. Thank you for it all – the chocolate cake recipe – and every bible study and book you have written. Really unbelievable how God is so real… so so real.

Go to Nashville, commemorate – and then get to work! 🙂 I’m pretty much done with all of those wonderful in-depth studies and no one teaches me about my Savior like you do. Love you dearie!
