Siesta Bible Study Kick Off!

Siesta Summer Bible Study (Introduction) from LPV on Vimeo.

*If you’re having trouble viewing the video, you may need to download a newer version of Adobe Flash Player. You can get it here. Thanks for the tip, Adrienne!

Hey, Siestas! Let’s kick off some summer Bible study, why don’t we? I’m a little over-excited, too, but hold up before you write back! DON’T COMMENT YET! Your comments to this post are meant to FOLLOW your group meeting as a way of sharing a highlight about your time together. Again, please DO NOT WRITE COMMENTS until after you meet. If you’re participating solo, please watch the video first and do the exercises for yourself, THEN comment with your brief responses.

Here’s how it goes:

Please watch the eleven minute video for instructions for your small group and, if you can’t watch it together, no big deal! Each of you try to give it a look before your meeting. These videos will be posted indefinitely, so it’s no problem if your group can’t meet until later in the week. I’ll always write the instructions in the post just like I did last summer in case anybody has technical difficulty watching the video.

Here are your 3 interactive exercises for today:

1. An icebreaker just so we can have the opportunity to be ridiculous: What breed of dog do you most resemble in demeanor and why? If you don’t know your dog breeds, describe your demeanor to your group and let them help you.

2. This one will help us get to know one another’s priority needs right now. Get out a pen and paper and craft a one-sentence text message with a limit of 160 characters that starts with (and includes) these words: Please pray for me. I…

3. Have one group member read Psalm 19 out of The Message to the rest of the group. (See below) After she reads the whole psalm, have members lock in on the section that describes what the Word of God (called by other names such as “revelation”) does for us. Mention each benefit of studying Scripture and have group members who have discovered one of those benefits give short and specific testimonies as an encouragement to the rest.

You’ll pray and dismiss then designate ONE GROUP MEMBER to comment with a report about your group. Please limit the comment to a normal size paragraph. Each member will then complete Weeks One and Two of homework in their Me Myself & Lies member-book by our second gathering in two weeks. If you can’t get all your homework accomplished, meet anyway! A little Bible study is FAR BETTER than no Bible study! Thank you so much for participating!

I love you like crazy.
Beth

Psalm 19
A David Psalm
1-2 God’s glory is on tour in the skies, God-craft on exhibit across the horizon.
Madame Day holds classes every morning,
Professor Night lectures each evening.

3-4 Their words aren’t heard,
their voices aren’t recorded,
But their silence fills the earth:
unspoken truth is spoken everywhere.

4-5 God makes a huge dome
for the sun—a superdome!
The morning sun’s a new husband
leaping from his honeymoon bed,
The daybreaking sun an athlete
racing to the tape.

6 That’s how God’s Word vaults across the skies
from sunrise to sunset,
Melting ice, scorching deserts,
warming hearts to faith.

7-9 The revelation of God is whole
and pulls our lives together.
The signposts of God are clear
and point out the right road.
The life-maps of God are right,
showing the way to joy.
The directions of God are plain
and easy on the eyes.
God’s reputation is twenty-four-carat gold,
with a lifetime guarantee.
The decisions of God are accurate
down to the nth degree.

10 God’s Word is better than a diamond,
better than a diamond set between emeralds.
You’ll like it better than strawberries in spring,
better than red, ripe strawberries.

11-14 There’s more: God’s Word warns us of danger
and directs us to hidden treasure.
Otherwise how will we find our way?
Or know when we play the fool?
Clean the slate, God, so we can start the day fresh!
Keep me from stupid sins,
from thinking I can take over your work;
Then I can start this day sun-washed,
scrubbed clean of the grime of sin.
These are the words in my mouth;
these are what I chew on and pray.
Accept them when I place them
on the morning altar,
O God, my Altar-Rock,
God, Priest-of-My-Altar.

We were so excited to have our first meeting today – finally! There are two of us, Lois and Cindy, from the St. Louis area. I'm 52 and Cindy is 46. It was so good to talk through Beth's intro questions, and to discuss Psalm 19. Can't wait to work on the study. We have some catching up to do!

    Elizabeth says:

    1. Don't know dogs and I'm going solo so no one to ask. My grandma loved poodles, so I'd like to be one in honor of her, I guess!
    2. Please pray 4 me. I worry about some of my extended family and their children. I'm heartbroken that not everyone treats their children as gifts.
    3. I loved this translation, and I'm usually leery of The Message – I'm an old English major and snooty about King James! But this was beautiful. I would like for God's word to be all these things. Right now it appears to me as a great big craggy rock, and if I could just break into it, I might see such riches as you can dream of. Certainly others have.

    Kay says:

Who knew that we had a dog-identifier in our midst! We laughed and laughed as we were given our observed dog personalities in such detail—Chihuahua, Springer Spaniel, Golden Retriever, Dachsund, Yorkshire Terrier, King Charles Spaniel and each description truly matched our personalities. We read and re-read Psalm 19 not only in The Message but also every version in the room including NIV, NASB, & NLT — falling in love with the idea of the rising and setting of the sun revealing God with unspoken words, and the details of what the written Word makes available to each of us. We previewed the summer workbook and discussed that our self-thoughts should line up with what God Himself says of us, remembering what we learned long ago– “I am who God says I am,” and ending with prayer that His words and our thoughts would become one. We exchanged our prayer cards and dismissed for the night after setting up our next meeting for dinner two weeks from last night at our King Charles Spaniel’s backyard pool ! Yea! Thanks, Beth, for all you do for us!

    Siesta Senoritas says:

In our seesoin today we found out we have a varitey of personalities i.e from collies to beagles to bulldogs to retrievers. We read Psalms 19 and got a lot out of verse 7-8 In which we are going to hopefully apply to our work environment the joy of the Lord is what we should all strive for in our everday life. We also youtubed Jennifer an watched the videos mirror and eye liner and lip liner which everyone should try to watch.

    Heather D. says:

We met at Dana's house. The first icebreaker about the dog breed was funny. We found the Message translation of Psalm 19 really refreshing in helping us visualize the many benefits of God's Word. His Word really does give us hope and calm us while directing us on where to go and what to do. We can't wait to start the lessons in the book and see what our next discussion will be like.

    Lisa Vinyard says:

We are meeting on alternate weeks to accomodate our schedules. It is a privilege to meet and study God's word with my two newly married daughters. We began the study last night.

    Misti Moffat says:

We met last Friday night, and it was just Lindsay and Misti. Didn't get a chance to check in until now. Neither of us are very familiar with dog breeds and so had a hard time with the first question. I sort of imagined myself as the Jack Russell terrier bouncing off the walls trying to get everything done, but not doing a very good job. Not sure if that's the right breed to compare to. We spent most of our time on question 2 and since it was only two of us, we just plain spelled it out as to what we're going through spiritually and didn't shorten it to a text message. We are both pregnant with our 3rd child (due within weeks of each other in October), and really struggling with being respectful wives to our husbands and loving, patient mothers to our children. Pregnancy is so challenging to all relationships that are involved!! We both recognize how much we need God's word to speak some attitude changing truth to us right now, even though it is going to need true commitment to fit it all in! And we both had a hard time using The Message as well, just as Melissa's post addressed, so it was nice to see that post.

    HulaHeart says:

I am delayed in posting about my meeting, but excited and diligently studying! 🙂

My personality is a golden retriever/lab mix. I love the water and kids. I am very loyal, protective, and family-oriented. I love to go and be involved and I love affection and praise! 🙂

    My text prayer request is:
Please pray for me, I need to learn the concepts of the Lord in marraige and parenting. I need knowledge and strength to break old patterns and to create new, healthy ones based on God's teaching.

Then reading Psalm 19 seemed like an answer directly to that request!! I took a whole page of notes as I read through it!!

    Thanks for EVERYTHING! 🙂

I'm going at it solo too! I'm excited to see what God has to teach me about my thought closet. My prayer starting out is that my thoughts would be pure and honor him – whatever they may be.

    Jennifer says:

Carrie and I met Tuesday night, June 30th and we are very excited about what God is going to reveal to us during this study. Neither of us know much about dogs so we weren't real creative on our 'doggy assignment'. About the Word of God making a difference in our thought lives, which in turn makes a difference in our daily lives, just confirms all our pastor has been saying to us through his sermons for months now…to get into the Word so we can walk daily lives with Jesus. I sooo love confirmation and encouragement to 'keep on keeping on'!

  11. 161
    Claudia says:

Yeah, we actually have four people and maybe five when our fifth girl recovers from surgery. We are starting two weeks late, but that's OK. I am just excited that God put this together and I love the Bible study…just what I needed to ponder God's wonders and not my own critical thoughts and worries. That's what he wanted the children of Israel to do…to remember his wonders, so they wouldn't wander into unbelief. thanks Jennifer and Beth.

    Lisa J. says:

Stephanie, Jeanine and I met this morning in the "man cave" in my basement. We let the kids have the run (literally RUN!) of the upstairs and we settled down in my very-well sound-insulated finished basement. It's the first time we 3 are studying together and we had a wonderful time sharing before we began.

We are a Lab, Golden Retriever & Aussy Cattle Dog respectively. Too fun!!

We read Psa 19 in the NIV and then in the Message and had a nice discussion on it.

We are missing the dvd's, but will manage without. I just have this "thing" about not having those blanks filled in on the viewer sheet!!! Looking to see if they are available online since it's driving me to distraction (lol)!

We are so looking forward to beginning and have planned our next 3 meeting dates/times.

I am truly blessed to be able to host this study, it's something new for me and I can feel the growth already.

Praise Him for bringing 2 such wonderful women into my life. I know that we will grow closer through our time in the Word together.

    Wendy says:

I am solo and just located this study. I am pumped! Please pray for me so that I can start each day new. I want to be able to leave behind the things that didn't get done. All of it will be there the next day, but being with my children will not. I want to let go of the high expectations to not hinder my time spent with the Lord or my kids. Ps. 19 has helped me see that the Lord in in control of my life. Not me. I have to utilize the fact that he is there to bear my burdens.

  14. 164
    Wendy says:

I forgot to post what dog I am most like. Saint Bernard is the final analysis. I am calm, patient, easygoing, and gentle.

    ginny says:

I am going solo right now but I hope to talk my sister into joining
Dog Breed I am a Mini pit bull terrier, fearless and determined.

Please pray for my sister she just lost her job due to cut backs.

The word of the Lord is enduring, revitalizing, pure, rewarding full of light, life, joy and strength. My personal testimony would be His trustworthiness. I have some deep seeded trust issues and The Lord has gone out of His way to prove to me that I can trust Him. Isn't he wonderful

    Gene and Annie says:

Praying that my passion for the word would be like it was when I first became a Christian! Make me hungry for the word! I loved the Message's version of that Psalm!

Prince Andrew and the Queen Mum says:

Better late than never…we (Brenda, Sydney, Valerie and Amy) met at a Panera in Metro Detroit tonight. We discussed the differences in the versions of scripture…and 2 of us had already looked at the blog to see the explanation. So thankful for your open heart on that discussion since it was on our hearts as well. We all had similar prayer requests and loved the 'shortened' format of a text prayer which none of us could just 'leave' shortened.

Fyi…Panera was a great place to meet as they have Wifi…

posted our picture on my blog as well. Just so thankful for this study. I posted a picture our our group on my blog as well.

    KY Pam says:

We finally had our kick off study session! We are all excited about this study. We found while sharing prayer requests that we have many things in common….being in a season of change, desiring contentment in our commitments, trusting God instead of worrying and using our time wisely. We all felt that we share some similarities with our own dogs! :)Loved the Message version of Psalm 19.

    Little Millie says:

My daughter and I are doing this bible study together. She is home from college this summer, probably for the last time since she will graduate next spring. We were on vacation last week so we met with our sister-in-law and aunt that we were visiting. We also downloaded the session videos from Lifeway and watched those too.

We actually sent our text messages to each other later in the week.

    Leah Gillen says:

I am a solo participant and just realized I never posted my homework assignment responses. Oops!

Dog breed – I most resemble a German Shepherd in demeanor. I am utterly devoted and faithful. I found this definition also of the GS personality: the GS "is so intent on his mission whatever that may be and he is virtually unsurpassed in working versatility". I AM most intent on my mission. The struggle comes in living it out daily, which leads me to the next task.

Please pray for me. I need PERMANENT release from the bondage keeping me from being the woman God created me to be!

  21. 171
    Teresa says:

We had a great time having lunch together and doing our study. There are two of us and we are already good friends, so it is easy to open up and get real. We're looking forward to seeing how God works to transform us into his image just a little bit more.

    KGE says:

For those who were asking you can watch each episode for $4.99 as a download to your computer directly from Lifeway. We downloaded and watched the intro session which was about 31 minutes. Jennifer was excellent and inspirational.

Since we are a group of 2 doing it long distance we did not buy the whole DVD set but are doing it this way.

I would encourage you to buy the download but for those who hate having blanks in their book the Fill In the Blanks for the Listening Guide Intro Session are: Ourselves, Eternal, Own Soul, Acceptable, Source and Redeemed.

I really liked Jennifer's acronym for CLOSET which is too long to post but made us think!

    Mama Duck says:

I am a solo participant and late in posting my homework!

I suppose at this stage in life I most resemble a beagle. I'm fun-loving and affectionate but with 3 kids under the age of 5 – I'm easily distracted and find myself off on crazy tangents. For example: "I was doing laundry now what am i getting out of the freezer?…Yes! I'll help you flush the toilet…No! Please do not put playdough in the blender…"

Please pray for us – my husband is being deployed for a year and we've been stuck for 5 years in a desert a good 3-day drive from both of our families. I miss TREES and WATER!! God certainly provides and has had much to teach us in this desert experience (both literal and figurative) but one year in this location without my husband and three little ones requires EXTRA prayer!!

    JAMBA says:

Brittany – going solo in OH until Saturday when I'll be going solo in VA!

I'd say I'm most like a Shih Tzu. Mellow and love to cuddle.

My prayer message would be Please pray for me. I am in the middle of a move and worried about my kids and how this will affect them.

  25. 175
    Jen says:

Jen, Gail, Pam and Lisa here! We met at Pam's house with only 3 sleeping babies to worry about (we have 11 kids between us)! It was heaven! Pam killed a spider the size of Texas for us while we watched Beth's video and some good disucssion followed. We read Psalm 19 in several different translations and some good discussion followed. We're all excited about the study!

  26. 176

Our group was finally able to meet…we're a couple of weeks behind everyone else but that's alright! We're all super-excited to be doing a bible study together and with all of you! The prayer request text message was great and led into a deep conversation for us. We're looking forward to getting in to the study this week :).

We had a great mother and two daughter group meeting via email and the phone. We answered the first two questions via email and then talked about Psalm 19 on the phone. We had a pitbull, lab, and a nervous watchdog. We are just trying to remind ourselves daily of the difference between fact, fate, and faith!

Our group met for coffee on June
23rd without its fearless facilitator(me!)who was in Oklahoma loving her new baby grandson. We are a long time Bible study group, connected at the hip and heart and had a lot of catching up to do having not been together for a month. The ladies shared blessings and troubles, pictures of grandchildren and as sometimes happens didn't get to the study 🙂 We are ready to get down to business tomorrow night once everyone has a chance to hold my visiting grandson. Loving being part of this and loving you.

My friend and I had a great visit over lunch…a few laughs over our dog identities, but so thankful for God bringing us together for this study.

We are both beginning to learn that our prayer closets get cluttered up pretty quick.

Blessings to all those on this amazing journey.

    Megan says:

I just have to say, thru our meeting last night (over Starbucks, of course) The Lord showed me that I am not alone in my struggles: my girlfriend is going thru almost the exact same situation! And we were both lonely! Well, none of that, now that we are both aware that we have each other. Please pray for us that we will draw close once again to Him, to hunger for Him alone.

  31. 181
    Phyl Bee says:

Okay, in all honesty the "pit bull" has been alive and well in myself; but, I think I have down graded to a bull dog now (if that is a good comparison). Don't have my book yet either, but got the first lesson from Jennifer Rothschild site. Can't wait to continue on..

Our group met Sunday, July 5 for the first time. We will meet weekly. There are 17 of us with 5 more planning to join us next week! We range in age from 21 to 60+. What a tremendous group of ladies!!! We had a blast this first week! The ice breaker was a hoot! And our prayer requests were an opportunity (no matter our age) to see that we are all coming from a place of need, and that we have much in common! All wanting to seek Jesus sincerely and to be in tune with him completely!

    Happy Girl says:

Hi this is Jennifer P. in Russellville, AR. I am sorry so late; I've been on vacation without computer access.

I am doing the study alone, but am so thankful for it because I am learning a TON! I didn't realize how much my thought closet needed a make-over. I've even been sharing it with my sweet hubby as he struggles with so many negative thoughts that have paralyzed him in a deep pit. I especially liked the day on worry. I think more than anything, I am finding huge comfort in knowing that my thought struggles are not something that only I struggle with. There have been so many parts of this study that I feel I could have written myself just because they are so personal and "right-on" with the things I tell myself. I can't wait to see what the rest of the study holds and more than that, I can't wait to see the end result of of my thought closet make-over. I think of the tv show "What Not TO Wear" . . . Jennifer Rothschild is helping me dump the outdated, wornout, worldly out of style thoughts and then helping me see how I can get a whole new wardrobe of cool, hip, positive, life-changing truths that will help me be a better wife, mom, employee . . . and best of all – this new "wardrobe" is FREE! Thank you for allowing me to participate!

    Cindy Sudderth says:

My daughter and I are excited to do this bible study together. Psalm 19 is beautiful. Yes, God's Word is better than a diamond, better than a diamond set between emeralds. A diamond is beautiful, shines so brightly, and is a hard substance. As we strive to learn and stay in God's Word, we will be beautiful, shine brightly from our souls, and be hard to discourage. Yes, God's Word warns us of danger and directs us to hidden treasure. As we seek God's direction, He will lead us down the right path toward the treasure He has waiting for us on our journey. God is so awesome! As for what breed of dog do I resemble, I would say a Collie since they are such loyal dogs and I strive to be a loyal friend to others. My daughter hasn't decided what breed of dog she resembles yet…I'm thinking chihuahua because she's a tiny gal, but try to run over her and she can be a spitfire. 🙂

Our first meeting was incredible spending 3 hours getting to know one another and going through the initial questions. Our hearts are knitting together as only God could do.

Psalm 19 meant so much to each of us.

Prayer requests: 2 ladies are in transition seeking a home church. 1 exclaimed that she "broke-up" with God and we are praying she falls back in love remembering the heights of joy over her first love. Another is having severe financial difficulties due to a sustained slowdown in her business. Praying that God would open doors of opportunity for business to grow and/or find another source of income that will sustain her needs.

God is so Faithful and we Thank Him that He cares and listens.

We are two weeks behind all the other groups but better late to bible study than never, right?

Most of the ladies in our group tonight expressed a need for a genuine and renewed excitement for Jesus! Lord, give us more of you!!!

We got a good laugh b/c not all of the ladies read the LPM blog and couldn't understand why Beth was wearing a moon pie shirt and sitting next to a basket of moon pies in the video!!! HA HA 🙂

    Shellie Paparazzo says:

Okay, it's taken me awhile to get back to you on me and Jeni's first meeting. It didn't happen until last Friday, because she had a sick child and then I had an issue with one of my children, which may or may not have been related to her teacher's death. I never did figure out what her issue was, really. So, we finally met last Friday when both of our husband's had the day off and we could actually even meet privately. Usually there will be children playing in the background of our meeting. She knows her dogs very well and decided that I resemble a lab, cause I'm very forward, not very shy, and have lots of energy. She said that sounded like a lab. She has 2 of them, so she should know. She said she's a Great Dane cause she lays around a lot. We talked a lot about my specific prayer requests, because I have so many of them with my son's health problems. In addition to what seemed to be asthma symptoms he's taken to passing out at least once a week or so. I'm not very happy about that and am definitely going to talk to his doctor about that at this momth's appointment. And of course our medical bills are atrocious and soon we won't be able to get the insurance to pay anymore. And then, the girls' and Jeremiah's former teacher's death. The girls had her currently, Jeremiah had her a couple of years ago. Of course, it being a homicide committed by her husband and the fact that they all knew she was pregnant complicated things a bit (do you sense the sarcasm). I don't know if that is why my older 2 children have been acting out or not. There was even a fire in our home that did only a little bit of damage (we still have the same house) that we suspect our son set. Needless to say as much as I was determined not to let it dominate our time, my family's issues did end up taking a lot of our time. Next time we're meeting at her house and sending the kids into the fenced in backyard while we visit. Hopefully they'll behave. That didn't used to be a concern for my children, but lately it definitely has.

  38. 188
    Lisa says:

Wow! We did it. I wasn't sure if this would ever work out, but we all met and we even had two babysitters take care of our kids across the street at my house as we met at another group member's house. It is great having neighbors you know and trust and can have a Bible study with!
We are all so thankful that we can meet together and have a Bible study. May we fill our minds with God's Word!

My goodness! We had no idea how many "doggie" personalities we could come up with: Loyal, obedient, princess, friendly, bossy & more. We have three very funny dog personalities– and no we dont look like our breeds!!

Our prayers were for:travel from one country to another for a new assignment, prayer of the continued healing of an injury, and prayer for finding just the right job at the right time.

Reading Psalm 19 (NIV) was so refreshing to each of us.
verse 14:"May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight,O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer.

Please pray for me I want to see my past as something that celebrates God's restoration & healing.

Psalm 19 is such a great reminder of why studying scripture should be the priority. Self-help books are only as good as the human who wrote them, but our Savior's words are like diamonds, beautiful and guaranteed for a lifetime. It is like a map that helps me "find our way" (mine and God's!!)

This is going to be a great study. Thank you for doing it! 🙂

Please pray for me, A few years ago, 4 to be exact my dad died, he was a huge security blanket for me. I'm 38 and still having a hard time. I ventured into studying witchcraft as a means to getting answers i didnt think God was giving me. Having a rough time releasing that spirit of witchcraft of me, I dont want that hold anymore. Psalms 19:12-14 is what i needed to hear today. Thank you beth for this study.

Doin' it solo but still do all the activities with whatever friend is over or my husband, lol. I am like an Australian Shepherd – sweet, loyal, hard worker but can get very fiesty if someone messes with my family or friends!

Am lovin' it and doin' all the videos along with it!

Bridget & Maria in Phoenix, AZ – finally had chance to meet up due to crazy schedules.
    1. Type of dog – Bridget said Westie because they have close-knit group of friends, rather than a ton of close relationships, they are smart and loyal. Maria said Golden retriever – wants to be everyone's friend, but easily distracted by too many friends and activities.
    2. Please pray for Bridget: That I would have more outward care for others and give out the riches of God's Word and Love. For Maria: Need to keep priorities straight, make good decisions to do the Important rather than "urgent" and avoid distraction.
    3. Psalm 19 & God's Word – we both agree it's the most valuable possession we have, and want to learn more of it!

"The revelation of God is whole and pulls our lives together" I need that so badly right now. I need God to pull my life together. We're expecting a baby after four tragic losses. I'm living in fear of another loss. I need to let go of the lies and listen to His promises.

We are a little(ok five weeks) behind the actual Bible study schedule but still so excited to be a part of it. Today we were a little distracted by the fact that the Ty Pennington is in our little town. We were praising God for that. 🙂

Ps. 19 was very relevent for us because a lot of us are just about ready to head of to college for the first time and are still discovering where God is sending us. Can't wait for the next study!

I'm a little late at commenting on how our Bible study went, but it is better late than never. Our first meeting was on a wednesday before regular church. My group is the Clare, Mi girls…Bethany, Valerie, Christy, Amber, Amylynn, Lorraine, Mary Sue, Kristen, Kayla, and Kelly. We met at Christy's house and sat in the backyard getting very vulnerable with one another. We had a great time and felt fueled for service that night, which was definetly blessed with the Holy Spirit's presence!

Last night we were finally able to have our first meeting! We are all "around" 30 years old and have each been married for 1-3 years. We spent a lot of time just catching up and talking about what's going on in our lives. Sharing our "please pray for me" matters was probably the meatiest part of our time together because it gave us each an opportunity to share something that wouldn't necessarily just come up in conversation. We are all really excited about digging into the Word through this study!
