Siesta Bible Study Kick Off!

Siesta Summer Bible Study (Introduction) from LPV on Vimeo.

*If you’re having trouble viewing the video, you may need to download a newer version of Adobe Flash Player. You can get it here. Thanks for the tip, Adrienne!

Hey, Siestas! Let’s kick off some summer Bible study, why don’t we? I’m a little over-excited, too, but hold up before you write back! DON’T COMMENT YET! Your comments to this post are meant to FOLLOW your group meeting as a way of sharing a highlight about your time together. Again, please DO NOT WRITE COMMENTS until after you meet. If you’re participating solo, please watch the video first and do the exercises for yourself, THEN comment with your brief responses.

Here’s how it goes:

Please watch the eleven minute video for instructions for your small group and, if you can’t watch it together, no big deal! Each of you try to give it a look before your meeting. These videos will be posted indefinitely, so it’s no problem if your group can’t meet until later in the week. I’ll always write the instructions in the post just like I did last summer in case anybody has technical difficulty watching the video.

Here are your 3 interactive exercises for today:

1. An icebreaker just so we can have the opportunity to be ridiculous: What breed of dog do you most resemble in demeanor and why? If you don’t know your dog breeds, describe your demeanor to your group and let them help you.

2. This one will help us get to know one another’s priority needs right now. Get out a pen and paper and craft a one-sentence text message with a limit of 160 characters that starts with (and includes) these words: Please pray for me. I…

3. Have one group member read Psalm 19 out of The Message to the rest of the group. (See below) After she reads the whole psalm, have members lock in on the section that describes what the Word of God (called by other names such as “revelation”) does for us. Mention each benefit of studying Scripture and have group members who have discovered one of those benefits give short and specific testimonies as an encouragement to the rest.

You’ll pray and dismiss then designate ONE GROUP MEMBER to comment with a report about your group. Please limit the comment to a normal size paragraph. Each member will then complete Weeks One and Two of homework in their Me Myself & Lies member-book by our second gathering in two weeks. If you can’t get all your homework accomplished, meet anyway! A little Bible study is FAR BETTER than no Bible study! Thank you so much for participating!

I love you like crazy.
Beth

Psalm 19
A David Psalm
1-2 God’s glory is on tour in the skies, God-craft on exhibit across the horizon.
Madame Day holds classes every morning,
Professor Night lectures each evening.

3-4 Their words aren’t heard,
their voices aren’t recorded,
But their silence fills the earth:
unspoken truth is spoken everywhere.

4-5 God makes a huge dome
for the sun—a superdome!
The morning sun’s a new husband
leaping from his honeymoon bed,
The daybreaking sun an athlete
racing to the tape.

6 That’s how God’s Word vaults across the skies
from sunrise to sunset,
Melting ice, scorching deserts,
warming hearts to faith.

7-9 The revelation of God is whole
and pulls our lives together.
The signposts of God are clear
and point out the right road.
The life-maps of God are right,
showing the way to joy.
The directions of God are plain
and easy on the eyes.
God’s reputation is twenty-four-carat gold,
with a lifetime guarantee.
The decisions of God are accurate
down to the nth degree.

10 God’s Word is better than a diamond,
better than a diamond set between emeralds.
You’ll like it better than strawberries in spring,
better than red, ripe strawberries.

11-14 There’s more: God’s Word warns us of danger
and directs us to hidden treasure.
Otherwise how will we find our way?
Or know when we play the fool?
Clean the slate, God, so we can start the day fresh!
Keep me from stupid sins,
from thinking I can take over your work;
Then I can start this day sun-washed,
scrubbed clean of the grime of sin.
These are the words in my mouth;
these are what I chew on and pray.
Accept them when I place them
on the morning altar,
O God, my Altar-Rock,
God, Priest-of-My-Altar.

    Hi
I am doing the study solo but now a couple of girlfriends may want to join in so I will let them view the video and see what they think and then get together with them and then we will post our blog

Praise God for our time together. We laughed, cried and got closer. We are a couple of poodles and an English Mastif. I can see God wants to work on what we say to ourselves as mothers. We need to allow ourselves grace when we mess up instead of put downs. We are SOOOO excited to hear from God in this study. Thanks Beth!!!

We had just the right size group of seven ladies from single, to stay at home moms, to working moms, to working to be moms….and after discussing our "text msg" prayer requests, I can totally see why God hand picked this group of ladies to go through this study. So excited to get started and dig into God's word to fill up our closets with the truth from God.

    Chris says:

Our group consists of myself and my best friend. We texted each other our prayer request so we can keep it as a reminder! (We were too lazy to count out the characters!)

What we learned from our reading is this:
Ps 19 assures us that God's Word is our "Heavenly GPS"! No matter where we find ourselves on or off the path of His desired will for our lives, it can (and will) "right our course"! But we've got to use it often, plug it in and take heed of its commands!

Ooooo baby! After doing some of my homework, I can see this study is going to be good….my thought closet is an atrocious mess. I guess I knew it on some level, but to see it all on the page in my own handwriting was just a bit overwhelming….

I think I am exactly like my own "alpha" German Shepherd dog….intensely territorial, with a bark that is unbelievably scary at times, but (once you get to know me) a very loyal, devoted, companion.
(We also both have blonde hair with dark roots…we chose each other purely on looks alone! Shallow but true)

I thank you Beth and all the siestas for doing this study for me this summer…my Savior knew I needed some major help cleaning out the junk, so he provided me a community to help!

I am just "bonkers" for you,

    Leslie

A hint for those getting a start and stop video. Or no internet connection at you meeting place. Play the video at home hooked to the internet. (I turned off the sound and didn't watch it because I wanted to see it with the group). After it has played completely through, hypernate you laptop or at least just don't turn it off or shut down the LPM window. When you are ready to play the video just click on play and it will play from memory and not start and stop. I don't have internet at my office so I used my husbands cell that has internet. However, since it will play from memory as long as I don't shut down the computer, I will now load it up from home and take it to work ready to go. (If only the video could be loaded by around 6:30 a.m on Tuesday morning so I could do it before work)

A solution to my no internet problem

    Amber says:

The three of us, Amber, Sandy, and Ashley met at Sandy's house. Sandy is mine (Amber) and Ashley's mother. We got a kick out of the dog breed question. I had the hardest time deciding what breed of dog I most resemble. We also got a kick out of some of the wording from the Message translation. I'm not very familiar with the Message so I found some of the modern day wording quite funny.

I found it quite beneficial to make a list of what Psalm 19 says about the Word of God. It will be a good list to have and to look over when I am experiencing any moments of doubt.

Oh, and we, of course, chuckled throughout your video. You are such a blast, Beth! My mom was quite surprised to see that you had zebra-striped pillows in your office. I guess you didn't put her in mind of an animal print kind of gal! 🙂

    Take care!

Our group of 6 (missing 3 tonight) met on Wednesday night. We just had a great time and it seems are going through similar issues right now. We talked about the desire to be more versed in the Bible, to live out 1 Corinthians 13 in our parenting, and in our marriages, and about how God's word is ALIVE and that we don't want to miss what He has to say to us every day. His Word has the power to change the course of our days. We are having so much fun that we are meeting weekly, otherwise we'd be up till all hours catching up from 2 weeks apart!

We had an awesome first meeting…there are 14 ladies total in our group, but 3 weren't able to make it to our first meeting. We are in Houston, TX. We held our meeting at one of our group member's houses and had yummy desserts and had great conversation about the 3 topics Beth talked about tonight. We took our group pic and I will upload it tomorrow. It will be missing a few of our members, so I will update the picture after our next meeting when hopefully all of us can be there. We are just so blessed to have this wonderful group of women and I know this journey will impact each of us personally in a very positive way. Can't wait for our next meeting!

    Kara says:

I'm goin' solo on this, I live in OH. and i'm in my early 30's. Here are my answers:

    1. This may seem silly, but I did a quiz on Facebook and here's my result: You're a Dachshund. You are lively and affectionate. You are bold and confident, you love your friends, but do not always make new ones easily. You are cautious but curious. You can be stubborn at times.

    2. My Prayer requests: A. Through this study, I want to learn to replace Satan's lies w/God's truth.
    B. Prayers for relationships as I'm not the same as I waa a few years ago and that's unsetteling to some people.
    C. Prayers that I don't allow fear to keep me from doing things.

    3. God's word: warns of danger; keeps me from stupid sins; pulls lives togeth; God's signposts are clear and point out the right road; God's directions are plain and easy on the eyes; God's decisions are accurate.

I'll be honest a couple of these I don't understand. Others, I do. Only after going my way in lots of areas of my life have I learned to listen, and watch where God wants me.

I hope this isn't too long. Again, thanks for doing this. I'm excited to see what I learn from this. God Bless!

We had a wonderful night–same group as last summer minus one (and plus another coming next time). So we enjoyed catching up with one another–and shared longer prayer requests because we needed to catch up. The funniest thing was that Sheila said, "You mean we have to take a picture? I don't have my lipstick." It was the ongoing joke of the night. We're looking forward to digging into the Word together.

    Tracy Ruckman says:

We are the "Me, Myself, & My Siestas" – an online group of 25 awesome ladies from 12 states and 2 countries. We posted the interactives to our group and are learning a great deal about one another.

    1) We're a dog pound! Our breeds include: lots of Labs, a Boston Terrier, a couple of bull dogs, a Chihuahua, Dalmatian, and Doberman. Shelties and Austalian shepherds were also mentioned.

    2) We have many serious needs in our group. Many are burdened for others, and many are facing difficult circumstances. Please join us in praying for one another.

    3) Psalm 19 spoke so personally to many of us. The verse "God pulls our lives together" resonated in a powerful way. One member summed up most of our conversation with one sentence, "God is all we need, really."

We are blessed to have a precious young woman in our group who is currently serving in Nepal. She made a comment today that touched many of us and I'd like to share it with all of you.

She said, "in deep but wonderful brokeness found out MY JESUS did not NEED me… but He WANTED me… He wanted my heart…"

What a blessing this study already is – and we've only just begun!

Starting the morning with coffee & the Siesta Bible study! Talked about being caregivers and being active with God. Request for patience in ministering, another request was to be able to trust God for His plan. My latest memory verse is Ps 19:13, so it was interesting to read it in the "Message"

We had a great first meeting! Tons of laughter, great food, and very open hearts as we shared prayer needs. The dog question stumped us, but brought lots of laughter when we realized we are all mutts. There's a little bit of lots of breeds in each of us!

Thank you so much for all the work you put into making this happen!

We discussed how we thought maybe we could purchase the $4.99 download of each of JR's sessions and just use it once… ie an "individual" use… but felt like we would not be doing the right thing since the Lifeway store said it was for an "individual's" use.

As of this moment, I'm diving into this study alone (along with the countless others in cyberworld)! I would have to say that I'm probably most like a beagle- even tempered and content for the most part, but able to get excited, distracted, or riled up just as easily. A happy little tail-wagger! Psalm 19's revelation about God's Word reminds us that it is the handbook/instructions for life. It is the ultimate, unabridged, complete roadmap- pointing out the right roads, leading us to joy and away from sin, more precious than gold and sweeter than strawberries, helping us to gain wisdom, directing us to the hidden treasures, and giving us hope for starting each new day with the awesome opportunity to worship, honor, love, and obey Him. Please pray for me. I need to get back into having my daily quiet time again and regain focus to Him. Then all else will happen as it should.

Our group meets Wednesday night. We had eight out of 14 women, which worked out well as we huddled around my ancient computer.

Our group consists of women age 17 to 50-ish who are meeting for the first time. We read Psalm 19 in 3 different versions. As we tried to discuss it, it occured to me that I am a Sanguine leading a group of Melancholies! I was talking and they were taking notes. NO! TALK GIRLS!!! We moved on to the 'conversation guide' in the book. As soon as I shared how difficult it was for me to live in this town, being a transplant of 3 years, Oh Siestas, those gals came to life! We all struggle with leaving our familiar towns/states and trying to set down roots in this dry dirt town. We talked about how to view it w/ positive talk, and not be like the children in the wilderness.

And then our dear 17 y.o. participant said she is trying to change her 'stinkin thinkin'. We all liked that! She told us she learned that phrase in A.A. Bless her tender and damaged heart!

We decided to memorize a verse EVERY WEEK! We are starting with Psalm 19:14. It's going to be a GREAT 7 weeks!

Love my group – will enjoy being together in studying God’s Word; meeting at my house; had fun watching Beth’s intro video; in our late 30’s-early 40’s. Did I mention I’m doing this study solo? HA! But I am also with hundreds of blog siestas.
I’m a Corgi…herder, loyal, little/big dog, my big wagging tail reveals my feelings, snuggler, protector, happy (blessed) in simple things, smart, (humble), etc. The dog choice was easy since I thoroughly researched breeds to complement my personality when I selected my precious Cardigan Welsh Corgi puppy and only “child” (More on her in a related reply to the Beanie/Sunny post.)
Please pray for me. I am stalled in areas that boil down to issues involving perfectionism (stopped myself…really wanted to perfect this sentence).
Love starting out with Psalm 19 to remind me reasons why I continue to make Bible study a priority – a big motivator in keeping me in the Word. Thank you for the timely prompting.

We "Extreme Siestas" met on Tuesday afternoon/evening for an extended session…6 hours together! We're guessing that's probably a record for Siestas! to start our bible study. We take our name from one of our husbands who lovingly says that sometimes the quantity of time we spend together is a bit "excessive" however; we forgot what word he used when we posted Tuesday and decided to call ourselves "extreme." Hey! When you're praising the LORD & lifting one another up with insight & encouragement, sometimes it takes time!

Our "Please pray 4 me, I…

Susan – need to be able to structure my day so I can be more productive.

Cindi – want to continue to learn to discern the Holy Spirit speaking to me & be obedient / faithful (not just hearing what I want to hear and doing what I want to do)

Julie – need wisdom & discernment to know what God wants for me & how to follow through in faithfulness

Kim – need/want to be filled with God and emptied of me – know when I need to say something and when I need to be quiet

Beth, I know this post is for group check-in but, I had to let you know how very thankful I am that you choose this study. After 3 days of homework . . . I had absolutely no idea the negative thoughts about myself that have been running around in my head. No idea! I'm generally a positive person so it never occurred to me how negative I was about myself.

I didn't even know I needed a "thought closet make-over" but I'm so glad I'm getting one. Prayed myself to sleep last night with Proverbs 16:3.

Thank you so very much. I would have never picked this study for myself. I'm glad you picked it!

We had a wonderful first meeting here in Louisville, KY.

We have ladies ranging in age from 31 to 62 and a great eclectic mix of women. Michelle, Kathy, Joanne, Mary and me – Jaime. We were also missing a few ladies our first week, but jumped right in anyway.

Our dogs breeds varied from mutts, to labs to Border Collies. We are a crazy group of loyal, over-excited, stubborn dogs….er, women! 🙂

We really dug deep for our prayer requests and laid it out there letting each other know what we most needed in out lives…stopping to smell the roses and enjoy our children, the courage to take the next step on our spiritual journey, peace in a relationship between daughter and mother, the strength to overcome anxiety and understand that God is all we need to fulfill us….the list goes on and on. We promised to pray for each other for these requests and others throughout the summer.

We are all so excited to see what God has in store for each of us, as he comes to meet us where we are in our own personal journey, and we look forward to sharing our journey with each other and all of our Siesta Sisters.

It is so encouraging to read all these entries and know how many of us are on this exciting journey together! We will be praying for all of you that God's word will speak to your hearts and create in you a new spirit of righteousness and positive thinking!

Psalm 19 felt like The Answer, A Fix for my life, Everything I strive for…all right in God's Word for ME! Pray I can learn to rely on this Word, BELIEVE it as truth, and act on it!

Prayer concerns for us were mostly relational – kids, husbands, co-workers. Some health concerns too. And each one wants to know our Savior more and be more like Him. We're off to a good start.

Loved reading Psalm 19, but our group preferred a different version. And verse 14 was a perfect summation to our prayer requests mentioned before. We've each been convicted on the things we let our minds dwell on.

Thanks Beth for doing this again. It was such a blast last year, I couldn't wait for this year's study!

Hey the Auburn WA group just checkin in!! We meet on Wed nights so we are a little bit late posters…but we had a great time last night opening up to each other about who "we" are at this season of life we are in. We are excited to have this opportunity and know we are each going to walk away from this with something that we can use for the rest of our lives 🙂 See ya all next week!

Even though I am with an online group, I am going to do a post solo for now…we are still working out the "bugs" on the blog.
Being a cat person, I am not sure what breed of dog I most resemble in demeanor and why. I love dogs but never had one. I know that Afgans are shy and get their feeling hurt easily and that fits me. I love border collies because our son has had several but I sure don't have their energy :o)
#2: Please pray for me..I am really stressed out and in the pit over family issues that I have no control over.
#3: The benefits of studying Scripture: It revives our soul; makes those of us that are 'simple' (that's me) wise; God's Word gives joy to our hearts and light to our eyes; the revelations of the Lord warn us and in heeding and obeying them we reap great rewards. Verse 14: May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in Your sight, O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer. (one of my scripture memory verses)
After doing the interactive exercises, I went to Lifeway and watched Jennifer's introductory session. I was not familiar with Jennifer until now and she is awesome and I am now enthralled with her (she is right up there with you Beth) I have to agree with you, Beth, on one thing…it is not fair for her to be able to teach AND sing..NOT fair! LOL!
I knew right away from the start of the intro session this study was for me…thank you for using it for the Siestas summer Bible study. Love all of you at LPM…

Sorry, this post is so late. My study partner is a family member and we had a family crisis, so we were not able to do a complete meeting. We did decide that Cassidy's breed is Bishon Frise, although she did not explain why. They are cute, however, so maybe I don't need to ask. Given my experiences in children's ministry, we decided that a shetland sheepdog might be most representative.

We met Tuesday evening at a local Starbucks (the same place we NOG'ed last Summer). There were just 3 of us but we're hoping for one more to join us next time. We laughed hard at the ice-breaker and found out some insights. The text message prayer request was powerful. 2 of us are usually not very concise, 1 of us is usually very quiet. This exercise helped us all share about what WE need (we tend to often go into conversation about others in our lives). It was powerful and intimate and we found, not to our surprise, that we have some similarities in what we're facing. That was encouraging. We enjoyed the study of Psalm 19 and are looking forward to our lessons. We didn't watch the video together but we had all had a chance to see if before we met in the evening.

WE had a blast at our first meeting. We loved Ps. 29. We made a list of all the benefits of the Word. The ones that stuck out to us the most were The word is….Whole. Trustworthy. Reviving. Makes Inexperienced Wise. Keeps from sin. ANd better than honey(0r icecream).

Originally was going solo, but talked my best buddy into doing this study with me, via cell phone. I'll be posting my own & she'll be posting her own. I am probably a golden retriever. Always loyal and will keep "fetching" – even when it's not the right thing for me to be doing!
Please pray for me, I need help in my marriage, my finances and my "closet."
    Looking forward to this study!

Only had 5 of our girls make it to the first meeting. That's okay! The other 6 will be kept up to date as we go. The reading of Psalm 19 was a great way to start off any Bible study. In addition, we had a copy of "It Is Well with My Soul" for everyone to take home. And I loved, loved, loved the fact that when I confessed to our group how I longed to be known as "one of the neatest, most sold out Christian ladies in our community", one of our group quietly said, "Me, too"! And that's why we gather together and study God's Word! Praise Him for strengthening us to do His Will!!
