One Reason Why

Happy Lord’s Day, You Delightful Siestas! The only reason I’m getting to be on here at this hour on a Sunday morning is because Curtis is preaching at the 6:30 PM “Ascend” service at our church this evening so, needless to say, I’m going then. I’ve had you on my mind, praying for you and cheering for you so much over the last week. At this point, do you realize we have about 3000 of us memorizing Scripture together? Unbelievable. This morning while I was working out in my garage, I had on one of my Nicole C. Mullen CD’s. (You know, she and I are really tight. I’m her personal trainer. Which, of course, is a lie and some of you are too new to the blog to recognize when I’m making something up. Have you seen that woman’s arms? That’s why I pump iron.) Anyway, I was getting my praise on to her song “Brainwash” and as I listened to the lyrics, I thought how my Scripture-memorizing Siestas would be pumped up in their commitment by it. Here are the words but if you love her kind of music like I do, google it and listen to it. Here, Darling Things, is one great reason why we memorize Scripture. In a few days I’m planning to do a little mini-tutorial but this is perfect until then. Sure love you!

Chorus: I need a brainwash from my head to my soul ~
I need a brainwash, bring it down to my toes ~
I need a brainwash in and out ’cause you know ~
I need a B-R-A-I-N double wash*

Overwhelmed by the stuff on TV ~
Overloaded from the pressure fallin’ on me ~
light head! Oxygen! I’ve gotta breath *
Email, Myspace, backin’ up all the time ~
Voicemail, press one if you’re on the line ~
Transformer, can you renew my mind?

Smack dab in the front of my mind ~
All that I’ve done wrong ~ Re-play and rewind ~
How can I erase it forever this time *
Smack dab in the pit of my soul ~
This guilty feeling’s diggin’ a hole ~
And my thoughts are spinnin’ out of control

The world is straight typical to rock the traditional ~
Kinda keep it real life livin’ mind simple though ~
My past is in remission ~ Thrivin’ on my conditions ~
I need a turn around ~ A fresh way to get down ~
Comin’ straight from Jersey roamin’ in the land of the dirty south, free ~
Escapin’ misery ~ With a Christ mentality ~ The only way to have it ~
Living word habits ~ Feels nice dippin’ me twice ~
Yo, ah I need a Brainwash… (Chorus)

Be not conformed to this world ~ But be transformed by the renewing of your mind

I’ve already memorized that scripture mama beth and now I’m breaking it down with my concordance!!

There is a sweet lady who works at my local “LifeWay” and bless her heart…everytime she sees me comin’ in the door she knows I have a question about how to use the silly thing! We just sit down in the floor asile together (blocking traffic and making a scene)…and she gives me a “for dummies” tutoring session on how to use a concordance.

    Beth,
I am brainwashing myself with the scripture memorization and my 12 year old precious daughter is doing it too! On our way home from church this morning where we heard an incredible message on a 2009 with No Regrets – she said,”Momma do you ever get so excited about Jesus coming back you can’t stand it?” Hallellujah!!!! She is a mini-Siesta! The pastor said that as Christians we should be like Paul when he left Ephesus – No Reserve, No Retreat, and No Regrets. He said that the world sees a bleak outlook for 2009 but as Christians we should be excited. Then he said, and I almost burst off my pew – that we should live out 2009 with the thought that our generation might be the last voices the lost world hears! I thought about 3000 Siestas memorizing scripture and thought we are gonna be dangerous! Have a blessed Lord’s day. (By the way I get on with my Nicole Mullen jams too)

I’m familiar with Nicole C. Mullen’s music (love her) but don’t think I’ve ever heard this particular song. I’m going to have to check it out!

BTW, Romans 12:1-2 is my scripture memory verse. God led me to this verse about a week ago and since then has shown it to me over and over again through a variety of different sources. Your post today was no exception. Amazing! I was having trouble memorizing Romans 12:1-2 at first, then in my sleep one night, the verse came to me with such clarity, I was able to repeat it word for word — Glory to God!

I need a brainwash; washed with God’s Holy Word. I pray that my mind will be transformed and renewed in all things Jesus!

Thank you for doing this, Beth!

Amy Beth @ Ministry So Fabulous! says:

I am really, really looking forward to the post with tips for the memorization. I really have trouble with memorization of anything and got so frustrated yesterday while working on my scripture. And it isn’t even long! I know I can meditate on it, but I really, really want to memorize it. It makes me sad that I wanted to give up before we’ve really gotten started.

One thing I have been doing for almost a year now is putting three pages of who I am in Christ up in my shower. I typed them up, along with the scripture references for each, got them laminated and attached ’em to the shower wall with velcro. I spend a lot of time in that shower, saying those scriptures over myself. In fact, it isn’t uncommon to find me standing in the shower fully dressed just reading my list out loud, many times with tears streaming down my face.

    Beth says:

Amy Beth, the enemy’s messing with you. As young as you are, you definitely can memorize. Don’t be sad. From now on rejoice and keep thanking God out loud for giving you a mind to memorize and, as Romans 4 says, call things that aren’t as though they are. Then keep it up and you’ll have it. In the mean time, you’ll have a steadfast mind. Thanks for looking forward to the tips. I am going back and forth between doing a really rough cut like I usually do for the Siestas or doing better quality which would take a few more days. Maybe I better just go with rough so I can post it sooner. I’ll pray that through. I love you guys so much. You’ve become a big part of my life.

I never cease to be blown away by what happens when one person follows Gods leading, steps out in faith and see how God blesses the effort. This might have looked like a couple of hundred women signing up to learn memory verses. Now I am reading how it is spreading to other groups, large and small. What is Satan going to do with Gods words being repeated day after day, from thousands of people for a YEAR! Think he can cover his ears that long? Its driving him crazy I just know it! Keep your eyes on the Lord and speak away any attempt of the evil ones attack on you because he IS going to retaliate!

I like to read books from Laurie Beth Jones and she says when negative or fear-based thoughts come into her head, she has a word ready to wipe it away. Her word is “Beloved” which she repeats until she reconnects with God and to reassure herself that even though she thought it, she doesn’t have to give weight to it.

So prepare yourself right now for his attacks so that he doesn’t one time get a foothold to distract us from achieving this giant step the Siestas of God are making toward being Brainwashed for Him.

I think my word will be Master….

About the cute scripture cards. White is fine for the index cards. Then get some color pens to write your scripture on the white card and add some stickers to the card for decoration. I use some glitter fairies, Marjolein Bastin stickers, bird stickers, Christian stickers (crosses), etc., that I have on hand. You can actually treat each white card like a scrapbook page and use some pretty scrapbook paper to change the look of the card and then decoratively add your scripture to the page. Let your mind go WILD with this because it will help you to memorize! I like to use the bird stickers for verses about singing praises to God. And the fairy stickers are perfect for reminding me of God’s Promise that I will be like Him. He has WINGS!

Amy Beth, I know Beth will share more memorization tips but it really helps to write the verses over and over. And write a prayer in the front of your spiral set asking God to let the Holy Spirit write these scriptures on the tablet of your heart and mind. I have the same problems you have and I know these help me!

Amy Beth, I got a vision of you standing in the shower with your clothes on and made me laugh. I am older and memorizing seems impossible for me. No matter how hard I try. I want so badly to be able to speak the Word in appropriate situations and while I know that God gives you the words when you need it, the exact scripture NEVER comes into my foggy brain.

I can only pray God is in control of what is coming out of my mouth and blesses the results. AND keep on trying!

This is a blog that will be forwarded on – as we were just talking about this late last night!

I was checking back to reread some scriptures on the scripture blog – that I really loved but didn’t write down! (It was a life-saver as I sat in a lonely hotel room after dropping off my first-born back to college – knowing that she wouldn’t be home again but for a few days at a time due to job/career now – they tell the first one is the hardest!)

Anyway, I think I will work on a few more scriptures – along with mine! BTW – my middle one, the one recovering from encephelitus, didn’t sign up cause she didn’t think she could memorize two a month but has three the Lord gave her she is trying memorize for this year. I told her not to feel bad, that the Lord knows that and He counts her in!

Beth, thank you again – for hearing the Lord and sharing this with us!

Beth, the scripture memorization is exactly what I’ve needed for a long time. I started with an easy one, one that I already kinda knew. Romans 8:1-2 Mainly because I struggle with the whole “condemnation” thing in my life. Too long and too detailed to go into here, but would love an extra prayer or two. I struggle all the time with feeling and accepting the fact that God loves me. And I thought, once I reached 50 I’d be wiser —- Joke was on me!!! ๐Ÿ™‚

No wonder Nicole has arms like that with the number of people she works out with! Where does she find the time?

One thing you could address about memorizing is how to keep the scripture addresses straight in your head. I know a lot of scripture but can’t always remember where they are. I was trying to remember 2 Chronicles 7:14 and ended up with 2 Corinthians 10:3.

    What’s up with that?
Ah the battle of the middle age brain continues.

    Moops says:

One of the most helpful ways for me to memorize verses is to ask the Holy Spirit to apply it to several situations in my life during the day. I keep my 3×5 cards with me so the Living Word can hop from the card to the situation. For instance, I’m memorizing Lk 1:28-38 (the angel visiting Mary) and part of the passage talks about fear. Since God is determined to rid me of fear because I have so much of it, He allows my insecurity to intensify so He can heal it. Then He does exactly what I asked Him to do according to John 14:25, He brings to my memory the words that He has spoken to me.

For example, today He asked me to be a part of a ministry in my church I’m afraid to fail in. I heard Him speak vs 1:30 “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.” Translation: Do the thing, I’ve got your back.

Yesterday I was struggling with overeating sweets (I’ve totally overindulged during the holiday and needed a sugarfree day). During a difficult time of temptation I moaned to God, I CAN’T SAY NO! I grabbed my cards, and read 1:35 “The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Most High will overshadow you…” I cried out for the HS to do just that. AND HE DID!

Don’t give up. KEEP GOING. If my 48 year old Siesta brain can do it, you can too. “For nothing is impossible with God.” Lk 1:37

    Xena says:

Thanks Beth for your comment to Amy Beth! I believe if we can type, we can memorize scripture. The ‘agreements’ we make with our minds can truly be deceiving. Those comments that declare ‘I can’t’! How many songs, addresses, phone numbers, dates, keyboards, names, etc. do we know? It takes memory to do that! I remember an old book, that became a movie way back when, “Fahrenheit 451,” (the temperature books burn at), a fictional adaptation how books where banned in our world! People would take on memorizing whole books, yes, the Bible was one of them, cuz otherwize they would be lost forever. I wonder if maybe we ought to think that way more, especially as the kingdom calendar comes closer to the end?

I, too, need a brainwashing from my head to my toes!! What a perfect time for this–I've stopped making New Year's resolutions b/c I never get passed the first week! Except this year I'll be memorizing me some scripture and be accountable to my Siestas. Thank you, Beth for giving us this forum to communicate and delve deeper into God's Word.

Our son's wedding was Friday evening with so many of our family traveling from the Houston area to Colorado Springs and friends from all over the country to witness God's blessing on our son and his wife. They had a civil ceremony prior to his deployment last Fall but wanted a church wedding to make it perfect. He told us his marriage wouldn't be complete until God was with them and witnessed by family and friends! It was a God-filled evening that I will never forget–thanks to you and all of the Siestas that have encouraged me to stay in His Word.
You're a true blessing in my life, being open and sharing your "realness" with us.

Thank you, thank you from the bottom of my heart.

I’ve certainly tried to do it myself and it can’t be done unless you do it for me dear Jesus. There are just parts we can’t reach when we try to do it through our own strength. I go to church at 6pm on Sundays and I do love a Sunday evening service and Eucharist- You ARE our personal coach, despite there are 3000 of us- I love how God can make what should be impersonal and impossible such a divine opportunity and filled with love. I have my verse memorized – YAY – and so I keep saying it over and over in my mind, and praying it, and meditating on it. I’m also going to start reading it in different versions and last night I read most of Phil 1, so that I had the whole context. This is going to be AWESOME ~ what the LORD is going to DO is going to be awesome!!

Amy Beth ~ I do the shower thing, too!!! While I was doing Believing God on my own, I typed up a bunch on scriptures that I turned into prayers for my husband, children, and myself.. slipped them into plastic sleeves and taped them in the shower. That’s usually where I do my thinking (and it can turn negative quickly!), so now my husband and I have scripture prayers to read aloud instead. He has thanked me a few different times for doing that. I’ve also added some to my kids’ shower recently! This was inspired by the subject of speaking blessings in the BG study.. and I’m still in awe of the knowledge that my precious Father actually speaks out blessings over my life..

    Blessings to all of you!
