Thank you Lifeway for an incredible event in Reno this past weekend! We enjoyed every second of it! The You Lead teaching before hand was indispensible as well. We are changed from the inside out and are looking of our “in the middle” challenges in an entirely new way. Blessings from the ladies at Sierra Community Church, South Lake Tahoe, CA

Thank you Beth and team for serving us! It felt like you went all out for us and I could feel the Spirit of God stirring my heart! What an encouragement to have courage while going through the middle, and praising Him for it. I am cherishing how “me and Jesus have our own memories together.”

    Linda Lorring says:

    Beth,
Thank you from the bottom of my heart! “In the Middle” was a confirmation of what God desires to teach me in 2016. The following is what I wrote before you came to Reno:

At the beginning of each New Year, I select one word or a short-phrase to focus on for the upcoming year. It’s usually based on what I’ve been reading in the Bible, Bible studies or other books, and also what I’m experiencing in my life at the end of the previous year. In 2012, my phrase was “hope does not disappoint” and in 2014, it was the one word, “care.” Last year in 2015, my word was “connect.” Throughout the year, I connected with God and others, and then something happened I didn’t expect: I began going back and connecting with my difficult childhood. I didn’t plan to go back to those painful memories when I started 2015. Why on earth would I want to bring it up and expose hurts I had buried so long ago? Yet, as my pastor stated in a sermon: “Memories are an anchor to the past” – good and bad. And, I believe God, in His wisdom, knew I needed to address the confusion, fear and broken heart I experienced as a little girl in order to gain spiritual maturity and emotional health. If I am to ever honestly tell my story of His unrelenting love and protection over me throughout my life, I have to go back so I can tell the whole truth. If I am to ever effectively minister to others and live out God’s purpose for my life, the childhood trauma needs to be exposed. And, that brings me to my 2016 word – JOY. I have been told this one word may aid, soften and ease the journey back from sadness and heartbreak to restoration and freedom.

This past fall, I immersed myself in Beth Moore’s Children of the Day study. As I studied I and II Thessalonians, I saw “joy” peppered throughout the two books, but I kept coming back to these three verses: “and you became imitators of us and of the Lord, for you received the word in much affliction, with the joy of the Holy Spirit, so that you became an example to all the believers in Macedonia and in Achaia. For not only has the word of the Lord sounded forth from you in Macedonia and Achaia, but your faith in God has gone forth everywhere, so that we need not say anything.” (I Thessalonians 1:6-8, ESV) How can “affliction” and “joy” be connected in the same sentence? Aren’t they at opposite ends of the spectrum! And, I noticed it says “much” affliction. That doesn’t sound very positive, uplifting and encouraging to me! It was perplexing to me when I first read it, and it still is. I had recently memorized James 1:2-4, where James tells me to “consider it pure joy whenever you face trials of many kinds” and Romans 5:3-5, where Paul tells me to “rejoice in our sufferings”; but this verse is new and I am not sure I want to add “affliction” to the “trials and sufferings” list. How do I experience joy in “much” affliction? Maybe I should have memorized the verse out of a different version where “affliction” is replaced with “tribulation” or “persecution”. Those words don’t hit home like “affliction.”

The word “affliction” has all kinds of not-so-wonderful describing words: a pressing pressure, something that causes great pain, suffering, distress, harm, oppression, trouble. These words remind me too much of my troubled past. As a child I didn’t understand my affliction, severe eye problems at birth, and as an adult I continue to struggle knowing how to imitate Paul, Silvanus and Timothy (the writers of I and II Thessalonians) with affliction and joy living side by side. I’m eager to fight for joy in 2016, but how do I receive it if it’s in much affliction? I’ve lived most of my 58 years of life in much distress, suffering and oppressive fear of going blind, but very little joy. I don’t know how to be joyful when my life is uncomfortable, misunderstood and confusing! Therefore, this year I’m asking my Lord God to teach me how to receive the Word in much affliction, with the joy of the Holy Spirit.

In addition, I’m reflecting on the Apostle Paul’s declaration: “We are pressed on every side by troubles, but we are not crushed. We are perplexed, but not driven to despair. We are hunted down, but never abandoned by God. We get knocked down, but we are not destroyed.” (2 Corinthians 4:8-9 NLT, second edition) This verse seems to weave “affliction” words but softens the blow with “joy” phrases: not driven to despair, not crushed, and never abandoned by God. Together, they remind me of the word “resilience“. Through trouble, it’s the ability to bounce back after staggering losses. It’s the ability to endure through perplexing and devastating disappointments or setbacks. It’s remaining steadfast and hopeful of what God says in His Word even when it is taking a long, long time for it to come to pass. It’s living with unanswered prayer and remembering His ways are much higher and greater than mine. It’s perseverance finishing its work so I may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. Or recently, it’s starting over again when my “story” was finally taking shape and it simply vanished from my Notes on my iPhone while I was completing the final edits.

In Fight Back with Joy, Margaret Feinberg recommends poking holes in the darkness and remaining suspicious that God is up to something good in the midst of affliction. As my gracious Heavenly Father and my prayer counselor are helping me uncover the layers of my wounded past, it may be so that I can become an example. Even in midst of much affliction, this is my 2016 Joy Declaration Scripture: “O Lord, You alone are my hope. I’ve trusted You, O Lord, from childhood. Yes, You have been with me from birth, from my mother’s womb You have cared for me. No wonder I am always praising You! My life is an example to many because You have been my strength and protection.” Psalm 71:5-7 (NLT). May the word of the Lord joyfully sound forth from my lips and may my mustard-size faith in God go forth everywhere!

Also love watching Beth on TBN!
I also have a question. Which Life Today program was the one where Beth was speaking from Revelation about our prayers being “in the bowl”? I really want to hear that one again
    and thank you!

I was in Reno and loved the worship and the teaching. I thought it was some of the finest teaching Beth Moore has ever brought to one of these events I have been in Women’s Ministries for over 30 years and most women find themselves “In The Middle” She brought a fresh perspective on making memorials with Jesus while in the middle and ended the entire event with a focus on heaven and Jesus being in the middle of the throne room. Then, the praise team sang a medley of songs about heaven. Honestly, it felt like we were going to go to heaven right there. LifeWay should definitely produce this teaching and allow it to be purchased. Many, many women need to hear this teaching. It is rich and powerful. I also enjoyed serving as a Prayer Encourager. I loved seeing the altars full of first time decisions for Christ. Awesome!!!

Wonderful post Linda …. I agree and said so well! I too have done many of her studies through the live simulcast and just thought this study was really above and beyond. The message on making memories with Jesus was so personal to everyone … new or old in Christ. We just didn’t want it to end …… as you said, the ending with worship and singing with over 4,000 women … powerful … it did feel like we were on our way to heaven. Beth Moore is a amazing teach of the Word and I just adore her and all the funny things we can relate to being women! Amazing, amazing time!

I agree with you Linda. I’ve been to quite a few LPL’s and this message was one of her best ever! I felt the move of the Holy Spirit in that entire arena. Only God knows how it landed on the women’s hearts.
