Just Got Home and Saying Hi

Hey, Siestas! How are my favorite bloggers on God’s green earth?

Keith and I just got home from our cactus ranch about six hours from Houston. I joined him there on Thursday because he’d been gone for several days and I missed him like crazy. He’s been putting in a bunch of new water lines and troughs for our wild game (that means animals in case you’re not familiar with the terminology) and was basically stuck until the job was finished. Hence, I headed West. You tend to get more attached to your mate when your kids are grown because you’re all you have left within your own four walls. It’s really important that you darling young wives and moms remember that one day, God and couple-willing, it will be just the two of you again. It will happen before you know it and, if you don’t have anything left, it’s hard to know where to start again. It’s one reason some folks just start all over but there’s no need. There are all sorts of adventures to have together. Just keep investing. Anyway, I didn’t mean to get off on that subject. Today I mean to just chat with you about nothing.

Needless to say, I took my laptop with me so that I could sit on the porch and work on the (overcoming insecurity) book. I’m all the way to chapter 11, praise You, Lord. I’m guessing I have about five more to go. I hope to have the creative part of the writing wrapped up in a month and then the editing madness begins. Writing is not for the fainthearted or those with a strong affinity for instant gratification. Or, come to think of it, for those who can’t take criticism. It is a hard profession that you only want to take up if you absolutely can’t keep from writing to save your life. That reminds me, I read the coolest book recently by Jerry Jenkins called Writing for the Soul and it’s penned specifically to writers OR to those who think there might be a writer deep inside somewhere. If that’s you, you ought to think about grabbing a copy. I think you’d be so blessed. I read constantly but I can’t say I’ve ever read anything specifically on writing before. I enjoyed it like crazy.

If you really want to write, you might think of tracking down some cactus and pulling up a lawn chair next to it. But not too close in case you doze off. A simple landscape is sometimes best of all. Our little piece of Texas is a great place to write because it’s out in the middle of absolutely nowhere and all you can hear are birds, crickets, cows (on the ranch next to us), sheep (mostly on the ranch next to us and a few on ours), dogs (definitely ours), rattlesnakes (unfortunately also ours) and Keith’s John Deere tractor.

When I’ve written about all my blond brain can handle, I go riding with Keith, Star (Border Collie, for you new ones), and Geli (Bird Dog, also for you new ones) in our broken down jeep with old fashioned air conditioning that comes from holes in the floorboard. We look for any animal or critter we can possibly find. This time we got to see a baby bobcat, 2 feral cats, 2 armadillos, and I have no idea how many deer. The sweetest thing of all is that we came upon a mom who’d just dropped a fawn. It was the most precious little thing I’ve ever seen in my life. Keith said it could only have been a few hours old. We scurried off quickly so we wouldn’t upset them but I went back later to make sure the mom hadn’t abandoned him. I reckon I’d have tried to feed him with a bottle and take him home with me. It would be so fun to have a pet deer in the back yard of the ministry. No, I’m not too serious. Maybe just a tad serious.

Oh, and Keith killed a rattlesnake in the barn. He was reaching right down toward it to move an old tire when he saw it. The ugly thing was rared up and ready to strike but didn’t make a sound because its rattler was missing. We think one of the feral cats probably bit it off in a fight when it was much smaller.

The temperature really skyrocketed there this weekend and I must have mildly complained because Keith piped up with, “Why don’t we go swim in the river?”

“We don’t have our swimsuits!”

“Baby, can’t you swim in shorts?”

“I don’t know if I can or not. I’ve never thought about it before.”

“I bet you can. Let’s go get in and see if you float.”

So we blew up a couple of tubes then Keith cut a pair of his Wranglers off at the knee (Big Mama, does this sound like your man? I think our men are twins separated at birth). I put on my gray running shorts and we headed to the San Saba river not far from our place. We splashed and talked and dreamed and planned two or three more grandkids and had the greatest time. My firstborn loves water so much. I pined for her the whole time. No, I didn’t get my hair wet. I twisted it up in a clip because he’d said he was taking me to dinner afterward. It was one thing to swim in my shorts. It was another thing entirely to go into town with river hair. Not on your life.

I can’t get internet there (or cell service) which is one reason it’s a great place to write but I invariably miss being out of touch with Siestaville. Melissa called me and told me about the blog she posted (the one right before this one) and gave me a run down of a number of your responses. I could hardly wait to get home and take a look for myself. She and I both marveled that God has given us such a tremendously diverse community here. What a rarity in this polarized world! How many communities of believers like this do any of us get to be part of? We are blessed indeed. It’s so incredibly boring just to hang with people exactly like ourselves.

One Lord. One Body. Five thousand people and one fabulous time.

Amanda, Melissa, and I love you so much.

PS. I nearly flipped over that Esther cake. Unbelievable!! Now, THAT took some talent!

    Hi, sweet Beth.

    Just checking in…

Boy, your prayers for us were heard. I responded to you, when you asked about everyone's finances…shared our situation.

Well, 10 weeks ago – who's counting – I get a call and I'm back to work consulting full-time. Working 40-50 hours a week and praising God. Miss my little boys, but I remind myself this is just a season. It's a blessing with blisters.

BUMMER————As of today, work blocked access to the blog. I only checked it once a day???!! Well, before I could not write in and now I cannot read the blog. So bummed. So, here I am 11:20 p.m. catching up.

Well, loved ones, I'm still with y'all 100%, just not able to comment as much.

    Love in Sweet Jesus,
    Susan

Beth – This is my second time blogging – EVER! My first was about 5 minutes ago responding to Melissa's questions about something we wish we knew more about and something we are SICK of hearing about. It is so great to see that you write about nothing as well as you write everything else.

I just want to say THANK YOU! God has given you such a gift for Women's Ministry. I was copiously (I hope I'm using this word right, I loved it and am trying to use it more) blessed at LPL in Laramie. I was really struggling with my job and needed a reminder of God's faithfulness. Thank you!

Our small group started Esther tonight! As I was watching the introduction video, I received a spiritual slap upside the head as I realized God answered a prayer during the Laramie LPL session. Something I had been pleading with Him over for months. I was struggling with an ungodly situation and begging God to provide me an out. He did! Again, He is faithful!

Oh dear, snakes freak me out so badly. Don't think I could go knowing they were there…

Just popping in to say hello and to let you know I've prayed for you this morning.

We're getting ready to move to Phoenix for a year, and so I've started collecting boxes, packing, making to do lists and such. Feeling a little overwhelmed, but God is so all over it all that I just keep telling myself that everything is going to be alright.

Hope you have a great day. My girlies and I are going to cut our hair to donate to Locks of Love. After all, if we're moving to Phoenix in July, short, sassy hair is what we need!

    Much love,

    Joanne

P.S. Plus we just got back from a week at Lake of the Ozarks and I've had lake hair for a week. Not sure how it compares to river hair, but it hasn't been pretty. Didn't touch a hair dryer or a curling iron for 8 days–and it showed! If nothing else, it's made me ready for a change!

P.S. As a fellow writer, it occurs to me that you would love Madeline L'Engle's "Walking on Water" if you've not read it. It's about writing and life and love. One of my favorite writing books of all time.

You are so right, being alone with the love of your life again is the greatest. We have been empty nesters for a few years now and it is wonderful. I love my children dearly and my grandchildren but it is so nice to be with my best friend. We have some wild and crazy times.

Thanks for giving us a place to share our lives. It is much easier with one who is comfortable sharing her life in such a sweet, vulnerable, but God-honoring way. We are at the basically empty-nest season. I can't say that it is easy or comfortable. I wish I was looking forward to it, but I'm still having a hard time with it. I have a husband that is not a good relationship person. Everything is sooooo surface. I've tried and I pray so specifically for him. Now I pray for me. I know God is my strength and comforter. He is my fulfillment, but I do have moments (some that last several moments) of sadness and unfulfilled desire for a close comfortable relationship with this man I married 28 years ago. My countenance kind of drops when I read such sweet stories that are posted on this blog. The Lord is my hope and He is so personal to me; I sense His presence so many times during those intense struggles. Thank you ladies for being so encouraging and faithful to the Lord. This is a sweet blog!

    God Bless You All…

    Hi Beth,
Love, love, love hearing from you. xo

I can't wait to read your book on insecurity. Thanks to our marvelous Lord I have had a measure of victory in overcoming insecurity (still got some work to do yet, but I've come a long way). I also have people close to me that I ache for as I watch their insecurities make them (& often those around them) miserable.

Praying for you as you write.
    Love you…..

Beth, we too have a "cactus ranch"–along with blackbrush…everything
either sticks you, stings you or bites you! Only those of us from South Texas would call our land "beautiful". But to us it is sanctuary…an escape from this fast-lane life for a couple of days a week. And I am trying so very hard to enjoy being alone with my husband. We are more different now than ever. The ranch is the only place we can just be together without undue stress these days.

My husband and I went downtown Chicago last weekend for our anniversary (first time away from our kids in SEVEN years!) and on the train ride down I noticed a woman across from me working on something. I got up my courage and said, "Excuse me, is that a Beth Moore study?" She lit up and said yes (the David one), and we proceeded to talk about the studies we had each done and how they changed our lives. Pretty cool to meet a stranger on the train and have Jesus and Beth Moore in common! 🙂 (We're starting Living Beyond Yourself at my church's women's Bible Study this week and I'm so excited!)

We are truly blessed! We are finishing up Esther this week and I for 1 do not want it to end! I just watched week 8 's video segment because I had to go pick up my darling 10 year old camper last week and missed our study. I was fitting in the video during nap time when my 7 year old- (mini Melissa) came in plopped down beside me and asked-"Has she talked about her hair yet?" HAAAA SO funny because you had just told that you colored your own hair and was showing off good roots. My girls love to see me and you get excited about God's word together! It is awesome to watch them get excited too! We will be beginning our "layin on the trampline bible study" next week! Attended by 10 year old Payton Shay and 7 year old Addi Brynn and mom of course!

    Oh.

My word verification word is "fangs!"

LORD God THANK YOU for protecting Keith from the silent rattlesnake. Protect us all from the silent enemies to our own souls. In Jesus Name. Amen.

I've been around that neck of the woods in Texas and it is beautiful in it's own unique way. I visited a place, I think it was Red Rock Canyon??? And the Admiral Nimitz museum…loved the Japanese Garden.
And I walked through an Authentic Western store in Fredericksburg that was fun to explore…wish I had bought a star Texas Rangers badge! But my favorite thing was the Sunday houses…small, adorable houses for coming into town on Sunday for church services. Just loved those little houses painted up so beautifully.

You are in the perfect writing location. So glad you took time to float in the river and "write" by the cactus. 😉

I've been planting a butterfly garden in my country heaven. Some dill and parsley are included because they are "host" plants that the butterflies love to lay eggs on. So, herbs are in my butterfly garden. Always have to prepare for babies, don't you think?

Beth, is this a hint that a little one is coming soon in your family? Just hoping…

    Terri Ann says:

Thought of you and your current project when God brought this across my path. I know it will bless. From Annie Dillard THE WRITING LIFE
"One of the few things I know about writing is this: spend it all, shoot it, play it, lose it, all, right away, every time. Do not hoard what seems good for a later place in the book, or for another book: give it, give it all, give it now. The impulse to save something good for a better place later is the signal to spend it now. Something more will arise for later, something better. These things fill from behind, from beneath, like well water. Similarly, the impulse to keep to yourself what you have learned is not only shameful, it is destructive. Anything you do not give freely and abundantly becomes lost to you. You open your safe and find ashes."
I am blessed because you have been so willing to teach by these principles. Thank you dear friend and Siesta.

    FaLoMeHome says:

I wish I loved my husband the way you ladies love yours. He's a frustrating man to enjoy ~ keeps everything to himself, eyes glaze over about three words into any sentence I try to share, can truly only talk about three subjects ~ himself, work and himself at work! He spends so much time following in behind the kids so that he can POUNCE as soon as they think about doing something wrong. SIGH….. He's so insecure he can't even decide where to take us to dinner ~ that kind of insecurity doesn't make it easy to make "suggestions" for improvement. So I try to be the one to change and be the example, but insert glazing eyes as well as focusing on the children's faults here. SIGH …. I pray that my children do not fall into the same deep sense of insecurity he has learned from his father following in behind him and pointing out all of his faults.

I don't know what I'll do with myself when we're empty nesters. Thank goodness ours are only pre-schoolers now and we have a ways to go, but something tell me that it's not going to get much better. But I keep praying because that's what God tells me to do. The other tasks He gives me I'm just not ready to obey yet. And that's not good for my eternal life. SIGH ……

I don't mean to be the Downer of the Day ~ I am so blessed by this blog and have learned so much. Thank you for being interested in all of us because sometimes, for some, it may be the only interest anyone has in us. Can't wait to see Melissa's response to Talk to Me! Can you imagine how much more she's going to teach me!!!

Sounds like a great get-a-way, Beth! Siestas–any of you who happen to read this in the next hour, would you please lift me and about half a dozen young ladies up in prayer? At 6:30 tonight I am beginning a Bible study for young women ages 18-25. We just planted a new church last September, and I have really felt God nudging…then finally shoving me to do this. I am so excited to study with and mentor these precious young gals (I'm their senior by a little more than a decade)! We are doing Beth's "Wising Up" study that she did with us a couple of years ago. Pray that they will also bring their friends who need a mighty dose of God's powerful wisdom…and Beth's anointed teaching and quirky humor. We love you, Beth!

Beth, I think I'd rather write looking out over the Tetons than at cactus. However, if my man were there, I'd even write looking out over rattlers just to be with him!

I am an aspiring writer, with a piece of Texas land that I also go to write on. But just Friday, I packed up my writing utensils and headed out, only to be scared off by my gazillion thoughts of rattlesnakes! Well, and of course this Texas panhandle wind. I never actually saw a rattlesnake, but the thoughts of seeing them had me running scared. I have made it as a finalist in a children's book competition. It is the closest I've come to actually being published. Thank you for this blog and the book recommendation. God knows us so well, doesn't he?

Hello Beth & Siestas! I would love to tell you about something the Lord did for me through your memory verses you posted. On last Thurs night I read almost 700 of the verses you posted. I was fighting the effects of bitterness and frustration because of a very difficult situation that is in my life at this time and I was seeking God with my whole heart for help. Through reading these verses He gave me a very clear battle plan. It was clear in my situation that: 1. I must choose acceptance. This is the new normal. 2. I must choose empathy. I can put myself in "their" shoes and I can relate. It does soften my heart. 3. I must forgive. Even though my flesh screams at the unfairness, forgiveness is best and is key. I will abide until the Lord has done His perfect work in my life. Thank you for posting your scriptures, God has used them so greatly in my life at this time. Happy memorization girls!

    I love you Beth,
I was on my knees in tears praying for my friend Christi Shaw, begging the Lord, feeling guilty for begging Him over and over when she called.
Christi called me and she could hardly get the words out through her out loud praises to Christ. It went like this, “She prayed over me Allison, She loves me, HE heard her and she prayed at the exact moment I was meeting with the surgeon." “I love You Lord; You are so good to me. You knew I needed to hear my earthly teacher’s voice and you put it in her heart to call and love on me. Thank you Jesus, thank you Jesus." “If this surgery does not go well and I come home to be with you, I want it to be with praise on my lips."
Then after a long pause she said “O my word, do I have her number on caller I.D? If so, I'm calling her everyday!" Of course she was kidding and it was fabulous to hear her joke for a change.
The Dr. said it looks a little worse than he expected and not only are they replacing every valve but now they are also replacing her aorta. I will e-mail you with the news after Thursday's surgery.
Thank you to every single person on this precious staff who lifted up my friend. We need each other desperately. God knew that. I love you and you can be sure you are always in my prayers. Most recently over rattlesnakes with out rattles…good grief Beth.

I ordered your CD's on Ruth…"The Kinsman Redeemer" last week and am enjoying them so much! I ordered them as a study tool because I am planning to teach the book of Ruth to my ladies class very soon.

May God continue to bless you in ways I can't even imagine!

What I want to know is did you hang that rattler on a fence, skin it, and fry it up for dinner with some hushpuppies on the side?

Oh, I forgot, Keith took you out. Too bad. 😉

I love that you are so real, Beth Moore. When I do one of your studies or listen to you in person, I marvel at your intelligence and biblical knowledge and I have you so far above anyone I know in every way…..and then you share your every day life and your struggles and your love of the simple things in life and I can't tell you how much that means to me. Thank you for sharing your life, your beautiful daughters and your heart with us.

I love reading this blog! Have I ever mentioned that you're one of my favorite bible teachers. No? Well, I just thought you should know… hee hee!

Also, to whoever reads this, I would so appreciate a quick prayer for selling our home. We are all set to move and our house has only been on the market for 3 weeks, but we sure would be blessed to get an offer sooner rather than later! Many thank ya's!

P.S. Word verification: "blessort" (Yes, I'd say I'm one of the blessed sort)

Cactus and I don't get along. I think I will pull my chair up under a different tree, like a Weeping Willow. No pokies. I fell right foot first into Cactus when I was 14. Not a fun experience and I still get the willies when I think about it. OUCH!
My hubby and I try to go on a date once a week or so. At first my kids complained. I explained to them that one day they would be gone. I would have to look across the table at this man and enjoy being with him. Now, they tell me they think us going out is a good idea.
He and I have never been without kids. We have been married for 15 1/2 years. When he is gone, I miss him like crazy, too. I realized early on that he is my covering and my protector. Some day I will have to tell you how I found out what his role in my marriage is.

I have been wanting that book! Can't afford to buy anything extra though! I had to wait on ordering the bible study book which I'll do tomorrow! It's late. I need to go to bed, but I have to tell you, I don't think I could write anywhere in Texas. I'd pass out from heat exhaustion! Maybe in the winter, if you can call what you have winter there. If it gets to 80 I have to get in the water or I'll die, I'm sure of it!

I am glad you had a post about writing (well, I love all your posts) because, reading through all the comments, I have found several other Christian writers (in fact, a couple are moms with young children like me who try to fit in writing while the kiddos nap). What a blessing to connect with other writers.

Wow, what a blessing to spend time alone with your dear one! I look so forward to that day, although I am trying to love each day in between.
We have 6 children, 22yrs – 5yrs old. All at home most are teens. My husband pastors the church here and runs a plumbing business as well. He is 50 yrs old and I worry I won't get to many of those quiet fun filled times alone. He takes time with me when ever possible but it is hard to find the time.
And tubing and canoeing are some of our favorite things to do!
So I am so glad you are enjoying such a pleasant time, you defintly need it! In Christ, Thankfully
