Tuesday’s Common Meal

Here’s our common meal for this week, Siestas! We’ll do something fun from the “No Other Gods” workbook for our main dish and I’ll give you one of my old stand-by favorites for dessert.

Main dish: Let’s all make the Sicilian Pizza Crust on p.119 then each of us decide on our own toppings. Perhaps ask each of your group members to bring their favorite topping then throw them on and bake them when they arrive. Let us know if you’ve got some really creative ones. If you’ve got a larger group, you might need at least two. One pizza has NEVER served 6 Moores!!

Dessert: This is the recipe I’ve used for years for the best old fashion pound cake you’ve ever tasted in your life. Your house will smell like Heaven. It is in an old church cookbook posted by a dear woman of God named Bea Brock from First Baptist Church of Victoria, Texas. (Might we call her Aunt Bea? Isn’t that perfect for a pound cake baker?) It may not sound exciting but I promise you, it is a crowd pleaser. FYI: these portions always make a little too much for a standard bundt pan so leave some in the mixing bowl as you see it’s getting too full. You can just eat that part with the beater like Jackson and I do.

5 Flavor Pound Cake:
2 Sticks Butter Softened
1/2 Cup Crisco Shortening
3 Cups Sugar
5 Eggs Well Beaten
3 Cups Flour
1/2 Tsp. Baking Powder
1 Tsp. Salt
1 Cup Milk
1 Tsp. each of vanilla, lemon, almond, coconut and butter flavor extracts.

Combine butter and Crisco. Add sugar and beat until fluffy. Add eggs; mix flour and baking powder and salt, alternately with milk. Add extracts. Pour into well greased and floured tube pan. Bake at 325 degrees for 1 and 1/2 hours. Let cool completely before you turn it out of the pan. That means you’ll need to make it about four hours in advance of class to be on the safe side. You can put a glaze on it but it doesn’t need it. You can also throw some fresh strawberries or blueberries on it with whipped cream. You’ll be back at your great grandmother’s house again with the first bite, tasting one of your sweetest childhood memories.

Pound Cake — my favorite!! I just love this stuff, and I’m sure that Bible study food doesn’t count toward the daily calorie count….right?

This is my mother-in-law’s recipe and it is too divine for words! Since I inherited her pound cake baking pan, all of the batter should fit in it! I’ll let you know. That pan is at least 50 years old!

Thank you for all of your hard work!

I just spent the weekend speaking with Kelly Minter and I love her book, No other Gods. I’ll have to try the recipe.

And thanks for the pound cake recipe. If I eat it with Siestas the calories won’t count, right?

There’s a blog archive just to the left. If you’ve recently started reading the exploits (adventures) (thoughts) of Beth and Amanda and Melissa, they might very well be a blessing to you when you have the time.

Meanwhile, from the archives for the curious siestas:

    Sistas, That’s What!
Our fellow blogger, Jackie, asked a good question after our lesson last night in Houston on friendships: BETH…… Okay tonight at Bible study we learned about calling our relationships by the right name.. we have friends, acquaintances, mentors, counselors, etc. SOOOO…. what do we call all these crazy ladies that have become an “online family”? They are a new sort of relationship.

I’ll tell you what we call us: SISTAS!!!!! Blood-kin in Jesus’ Name.

One More Thing, My Dear Siestas
A few minutes ago, I jotted AJ (Amanda) an email to let her know that I had posted the commissioning for our “Sistas” and my spell-check objected and insisted that I call you my “siestas.” It made me laugh.

And made me hungry for an enchilada. Then ready for a nap.

These sound delicious, I just have one question. Is there anyway that we can get the recipes maybe a day sooner so that we’ll have more time to pick up supplies? I hate to even ask but it might help if we had just a little more time. Thanks!

I have the same question as some of the other commenters about the origin of the name “Siestas.” I thought that Beth started by calling us “Sistas” (which doesn’t usually mean white women). “Siesta” always reminds me of a nap!

My mouth screams yes, but hips say no. Crisco? Oh my stars! I haven’t bought that since the Reagan administration.

You’re right Bethie. That pound cake would take me straight back to my grandma’s kitchen in the middle of a rice field in Arkansas.

(But my hips are still saying no…)

    Love you tons!

Regarding pound cake – I have never made one before so I have a couple of questions.

1 – Is it supposed to be so heavy?

2 – Can you omit some of the extracts and still have a good flavor? I don’t like the coconut taste.

Overall – everyone LOVES the taste but I am unsure of the heaviness and the extra flavors.

    Thanks

Whatever happened to boxed cake mix? I am way out of my league here!! I’m hosting tonight and decided to do the pasta dish from the 2nd week. I have never used yeast in my life and wouldn’t know where to start with the pizzas – they look great though. I’m doing a strawberry salad with the pasta and bread.

For those of us siestas who are a “little closer to God” (aka: at a higher altitude like Colorado) we will need to make some adjustments to the pound cake recipe. Miss Holly at Crown Laid Down advises to add 1/4 cup flour, cut the sugar by 1/3 cup and only fill the pan 2/3 full. Also you might want to put a cookie sheet under your pan in case it runs over. I made the recipe without the adjustments and only filled the pans 1/2 full and run over they did. What stayed in the pan tasted wonderful – it just didn’t look so pretty!

We are going to do a white pizza
olive oil with pesto on the bottom then fresh grated mozzarella cheese on top
Adding fresh tomatoes, cucumber, mushrooms, and black olives
Then we are topping all of that with fresh grated parmesan cheese!
    It is so YUMMY!!

Made this cake today and it was so good. I was so proud of myself for having all the ingredients measured out correctly and all the flavors lined up in order according to your recipe. Poured the batter into my pan (old tube pan that is in two pieces) and put it in the oven. You know where I am going with this. I walked by oven a few minutes later and about 1/4 of my batter was in the bottom of my oven. Switched pans and saved the rest of the cake. Thanks for the recipe.

Even though my dear teenagers are visiting grandparents this week, I am so thankful that you all included recipes for the study. My sweeties really enjoyed making the queso and salsa the first week. And my youngest has made the salsa twice since our first study! And I would not have thought to include a meal or snacks with the study. It was really fun for them to prepare the recipes.

i made this cake today but i don’t have any butter flavoring or coconut flavoring. i did have orange extract and mango extract though, and substituted them for the ones i was missing. (yes, i do know it’s odd to have mango extract!) also, i baked the batter in two bundt pans, making smaller cakes. i was thinking about sharing one of the cakes with someone else but i’m not sure either cake will last long in my house. 1/2 of a warm pound cake is already gone! i have 3 boys and 1 husband (not to mention myself..) and the cake is delicious, substitutions and all!!
